Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Have experience of Mobil stuff too but with race motors as we use them Castrol lubricated ones didn't have noticeable wear when doing scheduled maintenance.
Leading evidence: 'Lubricate ones didn't have noticeable wear' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean oil is always better than old and dirty' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I run Castrol Syntech Edge 0W40 in mine, changed every 5000 kms.

I'm also a believer that new clean oil is always better than old and dirty.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Anybody use Castrol Synthetic oils in 996? Have experience in rally racing engines in Europe and best stuff we found was Castrol EDGE & TWS Motorsport what comes to parts wear. Now my girl needs an oil change here in Florida where she wont see any below freezing temperatures so I'm thinking of 10W60 TWS Motorsport I used in my 3,0 SC ROW back in a day in Finland ...
Thoughts ?
What I've seen, again with rally racing engines Castrol lubrication was the way to go what comes to mechanical wear. Have experience of Mobil stuff too but with race motors as we use them Castrol lubricated ones didn't have noticeable wear when doing scheduled maintenance.
Once incident, off topic. We were doing a rally race up in northern Finland. Landed too hard on a crest, sump guard hits oil sump which cracks. No oil pressure but we finished the stage with two miles remaining. Had to retire of course. Took the engine apart at home, no signs of wear to be seen ...
You probably want to keep the cold oil spec as close to 5W as you can. I dont recall how viscous TWS 10-60 is, but these 996s really dont like thick oil on cold starts
I run Castrol Syntech Edge 0W40 in mine, changed every 5000 kms. UOA has been coming back very favourable (3 samples thus far), showing oil and additive package is holding up well. I'm happy. I'm also a believer that new clean oil is always better than old and dirty.
Every start with the engine "cold" is a cold start. All I can offer is Porsche has not approved any 10w-XX, 15w-XX or 20w-XX oil for use in these engines, nor any high temperature viscisoty index below 40 or above 50. Florida ain't so hot -- ambient temperature wise -- anyhow. Try driving in 116F to 119F heat in the desert southwest. That's hot.
I've driven in that kind of heat in both my cars and with 0w-40 oil and the engines were fine. Lot of owners run 0w-40 year round in all kinds of weather and their engines are fine.
If you want you can switch to Mobil 1 5w-50 oil. It is an approved oil. As long as where you live and drive doesn't get cold enough (-25C) to require 0w-40 oil the 5w-50 oil is ok. I run it year 'round where I live and drive. While it doesn't get very cold here it gets plenty hot -- triple digits hot -- in the summer.
So J_M. Asks for an opinion on oil, then when the reply’s are to use a different weight, says he will go forward with the heavier oil?
I can see his next post will be “so my motor is making a ticking sound”
The 40C viscosity of 10w60 TWS is 160 versus 0-40 Mobil which is 75. The 5-50 is 108. At 100C, TWS is 22.7 versus 17.5 for 5-50 and 13.5 for 0-40
So TWS is heavier at 40C than either of those 2 approved oils at any temp.
At double the cost, whether TWS causes gas mileage drops, a higher running temp, or Variocam issues for the OP is yet to be seen.
To some extent the ambient temperature isn't that important if the cooling system is doing it's job. You will get a small rise but nothing like the increase you could get on a track.
I don't think there is any situation where Porsche supports use of over XXW-50. I'd be uneasy about heat removal with a thick oil at running temp (100 to 105C ?)
