1999 Carrera 3.4/6speed manual. Just a quick curiosity question. My car is up to 120k miles and I know its going to need the rebuild eventually but man I just hate the idea of spending that kind of money for a motor I cant get more then 320hp from. I love my car and enjoy the get up and go of the 3.4 but it sure would be nice to have some more options out there other than the genius who chime in and say "should of bought a turbo" lol so aside from cutting up my engine bay supports and going through the huge undertaking of an ls swap. is there any options out there for the 3.4 when rebuilding it, swapping it for something else etc? I've read something about possible stroker for the 3.4 but cant find anything for it. anything that wont cost $25k lol again just kind of a curious question as I'm sure others have thought about it. thanks Brian

POST 2Original post

Audi 2.7T will bolt right up to your 996 transmission (though you might need to do some customizing with the starter location). It's been swapped into a few Boxsters I know of, so getting one into a 996 shouldn't be too much work. http://audisrs.com/archive/porsche-b...__t_61757.html

POST 3Original post

A great story, well told. Including the fire. . . . . I was so pumped about an Audi swap right up until the car turned into a pile of ash.

POST 4Original post

It depends on where you live. In California, unless you have a builder who knows the ropes, replacing with a "correct" engine is the easiest way to proceed from an emissions POV. There are many, many shops who will bore out the block (and fit sleeves) to increase displacement. There are also builders who will rebuild @ the stock displacement but with more robust parts. Then there are budget builders. And THEN there are speed shops who use arcane magic to turn extraordinary amounts of money into small amounts of fun. If I wind up in your position, I'll rebuild the motor (either stock displacement or bigger...) or store the car until I have the funds to do so.

POST 5Original post

Im curious what it would take to swap in a 996 turbo motor? I saw one for sale locally with low miles for 13k.

POST 6Original post

The swap itself should be relatively "plug and play", but you'd want an entire donor car because nearly all of the wiring harnesses and electronics are different on the Turbo (not to mention a lot of the coolant lines and whatnot). Also, you'd want all the other cool Turbo stuff like the brakes. If you bought just an engine, you'd regret trying it.

POST 7Original post

This guy looks like he regrets a turbo swap. https://rennlist.com/forums/996-gt2-...8-996-ctr.html Actually I regret every time I look at those fender louvers. The want is strong.

this is an amazing, amazing deal. Not sure how you do all of that for that price but if so, this is what these folks need.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 14619563

keeping with the theme of the thread.... do you offer anything in regards to performance increase, displacement, turbo, cams, porting etc.? the price is pretty much what everyone is charging which we are all going to be paying at one point or another but what about upgrades? that's not a hit against your post, you offer a good deal I just mean in regards to getting a little more umph out of these cars. I have the fabspeed exhaust system, cold air intake and a tune that doesn't work right. Fabspeed has said they can supercharge my motor for $10k but I would need to get it rebuilt first as my miles are to high(127k) for the boost. I agree, I'd want to get my motor rebuilt before adding that anyway but then I'm at $10k for a rebuild, $10k for a supercharger.... $20k for 400hp I could swap in the dreaded ls for that much and get more hp with a few CHEAP mods to the ls motor. our car are what they are... like mentioned just curious about options and wishing there was more.

POST 13Original post

Would love the list of builders who are doing nickies and solution and re & re for $10k. it was more like 25k for all that work when I was looking a couple of years ago

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 14621137

I just did a search yesterday before posting this thread on yahoo. seen lots of places offering complete rebuilds for around $10k. some with more and some with less options. only place I seen $25k was pelican parts. prices are coming down a bit since theirs a need for it. check out youtube (I did) lots of builders trying to get there names out there and get business as well there. there is a company in Wisconsin offering the coatings for the diy builders as well. like mentioned... that wasn't a slam on his post, that sounds like a great deal. but this thread is about performance upgrades.

POST 15Original post

Guess I would need to look myself but I have a hard time believing a builder makes any money doing a nickies and ims solution job for 10k when all said and done. I bought every part and did the labor myself, and I wasn't remotely close to 10k. I am a 3.6 though.

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 14621186

I didn't see to many over $12k yesterday when I was looking but I didn't read every website I visited as my focus was a little more toward the getting some performance gains. Just bites that these awesome cars were left with very little on the table from Porsche for gains I love my 996 but wish I could have a little more out of it. I know the turbos are great and "should have bought a turbo" is the default but I'm a root for the little guy kinda man and always look for the underdog car and try to build them up.... ssssstupid 3.4 lol I'm currently working on a motor swap for my boxster but really didn't want to go that route for the 911. but we'll see

POST 17Original post

Who said that the engine is only capable of 320HP? I've topped 500 NA from a 3.4 based engine, on pump gas.

POST 19 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

lol your Jake... I mean come on... your jake lol I've heard about you and tried contacting you but no reply. probably something I did wrong but either way. no one ... I mean no one will talk about how much your stuff costs it seams. I would love to have some work done by you (refer to first two words in this post "your jake") lol but at the same time.. if its $25k for a 500hp. I could do the same and then some with an ls motor swap. but that's the point of this thread.. I don't want the ls swap. If I could get 400hp out of this 3.4 for a reasonable price, I'd jump on it. I've heard limited stuff about this elusive stroker for the Porsche but I cant find any info on it. plus once you start talking about modding a Porsche a lot of Porsche purists scream to high heaven about daring to touch these cars and lips get quiet lol I'm putting 420hp into my boxster through a motor swap and its not an ls, porsche or audi motor and I'm doing it for under $5k I just want to have fun... is that so wrong lololol

POST 20Original post

Not sure what you did there, but no email sits in our inbox for more than 24 hours without a reply. If you tried to contact me here, or some other way, its probably not monitored. I handle all dialogue through our email accounts, so we can document all exchanges of information. As far as cost goes. I don't build the same engine twice, so prices are never going to pertain from one person/ application to another. What matters is value to our purchasers, and thats not necessarily going to come from the purchase price.

POST 21Original post

If you're putting 420 in the boxster for 5k, then do the same for the 911??? I'm going to assume a 500 HP motor from jake will be more than 25k.

I emailed from your website if I remember right but ya I probably hit the wrong button. I will shoot you an email again, I would love to hear about your options. I actually heard about you from someone over at fabspeed. said you were the man. I don't frequent these boards to often so I might be out of the loop a little bit. understood on pricing, at the time I was trying to find info about you I was just looking for a ball park figure on what I could expect so I could get some prices on china ebay for my kidney so I would have the funds and not waist your time lol Thanks for chiming in... greatly appreciated

my boxster build is a lot of work and I have built sooo many cars.... I just turned 40 and I'm getting burnt out. I just don't want to take on the 911. the boxster is being done this winter and the 911... I'd like to let someone else do if I can find what I'm looking for to be done to it. I'm sure jakes stuff is not cheap especially from what limited stuff I have heard about his work being pert near the best there is. And I've also heard he is extremely down to earth, practical and wont sell you something you don't need. so definitely worth looking into in my book.

POST 24Original post

In the days when I sold the engines personally, I spent 3/4 of my time telling people NOT to do something, and not to spend money. I've trained my replacement to do the same thing, and he gets the same rave reviews. We recently had someone try to add 18,000.00 worth of "options" to their engine, and I just had to talk to him. At the end of the conversation he saved 15K of that money.

POST 25Original post

I'd be all over a 420hp swap for 5k. Love to hear the details. forgot to add: has to be NC smog legal

muhahaha lol ya I'm kind of keeping lid on it for now. I will say its not a pipe dream. I Have already purchased all my parts and its just waiting for me to put it together. it could easily be smog legal. this is an American motor and eric down at texas speed (I think that was the name of his company) can make you up any adaptor plate you want my only hang up as of right now is getting someone who know electrical to help me out with the wiring harness as I am not to bright in dealing with that part of this stuff I'm going to go stand alone for the motor. anyway....

There are two key factors to getting this done within the price range. 1. Our costs are lower thanks to doing the build in our facility in Mexico City. 2. Most of the performance upgrades are bolt on and not machined in. The Nikasil liner we use are not LN engineering Nickies. The are NIKASIL cylinder sleeves but are not the prefabricated Nikasil liners LN sells for over 4k with new piston etc. We use the factory pistons. For the time being we are only doing the rebuild with the mentioned upgrades. Once displacement is increased you have to buy pistons etc. Right now we are not doing upgrades of that type. Our goal is to offer a rebuild with preventative upgrades to make the engine stronger. I understand what you are saying but its possible. Weve already done it. The engine I currently have in my 996 has the upgrades mentioned and it was within the budget. Add up the parts I mentioned. Price comes down enough to make it work if you can take care of labor. Your price may be higher since you used the LN Nickies kit which is different from re-sleeving with NIKASIL liners. Two very different things with a huge price difference. Im sure there are others like me that love the 996 platform but dont want to spend a huge amount of money to have a 911. With the 996 and a rebuild this is possible. If someone wants to get more performance from an engine or more HP then by all means go to a builder like FSI, 9xx, S-Car-Go, BBi, or any others that are out there. 9xx already offers rebuilds for 7K with a core swap if your engine is not damaged. There are several engine builders with affordable pricing that have their engines running in cars that have driven hundreds of thousands of miles on the rebuilt engines. Just call any of them. What we Believe: We believe that the Porsche 911 in all of its variants represents a quintecential package of performace, reliability, practicality and beauty. The Porsche 911 996 generation is a perfect balance between the pure driving essence of the original 911 yet has modern comforts and ameneties. For this reason we wish to offer the world Porsche 996 restoration services at an affordable price so people can enjoy and experience the Porsche 911 experience and change their perspective of what a sports car should be. Stay tuned...

if eric works there then ya lol it was a couple years ago when I had the plate made up. I've been planning this one for a while. I'm finally to the point of doing it. i'll do a build thread when I start showing some progress on the physical boxster. right now its stuff like porting my heads, buiding my motor, etc. nothing worth looking at plus I'm moving so slow on projects right now I don't want to be ANOTHER thread of a back yard mechanic who rarely updates it real quick numbers off the top of my head motor: $300 rebuild: with balancing and various work about $900 with me doing the rebuild machine shop doing the machine work extra go fast parts:$1500 boxster s transmission:$900 boxster s knuckles, axles:$400 adaptor plate:1500 if I remember correctly. that's honestly about all I've put into it so far. I'm making my own mounts and doing all the work myself. I'm sure the knuckle and dime stuff is going to add up to a couple thousand but I'd be surprised if I spend over $7k

i did email jake again and he returned my email right away. I dont know about the 500hp thing but i have talked to a few companies about jake over the last few months and he is respected by quite a few out there. Seems like a pretty good guy to me. Brian

Who said it was limited to 9,000 RPM? Youll learn more about it when the time comes. The displacement will also surprise many. Thats not because its Big, either. This was done to push a certain envelope, and I dont plan to sell anything like this. As for missing a phone chat, thats entirely possible,(but rare) as my time is not spent in the office. Im in my lab or the dyno cell, and we dont have any clocks around here.(it doesnt matter what time it is when we are working) If I missed a call I would have typically followed up with an email. When was this call missed?

POST 48Original post

Missed call was October 10, I’ve went a different direction since that time so no need to call now. Post up a dyno of this 9000+ rpm m96 motor.

No need to post videos, that engine is something I built for myself, for the hell of it. In case you havent noticed we dont resort to videos and all this modern marketing BS. I really dont care what sells, and what doesnt. I never have, and thats been the key to our success. Of course they are.. Im the man in the arena, with a target on his back.

POST 51Original post

Ha! Just calling it like I see it. There is probably a reason he never posts dyno graphs, people will realize they are spending $25k to make a measly 300 hp. Someone needs to develop a real plug and play LS swap kit.

POST 53Original post

or...you know...just buy a f'in Turbo. Not hard to grasp.

Yep, I have a customer thats got one for sale... Just needs the engine reassembled after it broke a timing chain, and bent a few rods.. He ran out of money.. Even has a brand new lapis Blue paint job!

POST 55Original post

I've seen a few LS engines with the same. All cars are POS's. and that bent rod was probably after a lot of mods, have a few friends with 500+AWHP 996 Turbo's and they are reliable as they get.

1.3 bar for 2 weeks... Trust me, those guys have bent rods too, they just dont know it. I build more of the TT engines than Id like to say, but Im done with them now. Yeah, the guys that do the LS swaps tend to have the same mindset. They eat up lots of our time for no reason.

POST 57Original post

I doubt it. Some of these cars have been tracking for over 3 years now without any major issues. Bent rods would have showed itself by now IMO. havent pushed any of them off the track.

POST 58Original post

Quotes source post: 14625904

Nope, see how that rod is bent two ways? This keeps the issue symptomless for a long time. 100% of the TT engines I have torn down have had at least one bent rod, and its typically #1, or #6. The TT engine is probably the best thing they've built watercooled, though. The accountants impacted it much less, but they should have kept the rods shorter, and not skimped on them. Rods and timing chains are the only real issues with them internally. Anyway, back to being on topic, and I'm disappearing again. I have a 1944 Kubelwagen to go pick up at the port for my collection. Its a great day!

POST 60Original post

Yes, no doubt the engines that come to you broken will have bent rods. not all porsche turbos out there are running with bent rods though. I've bent a rod in my focus race car, and in one of my subies. They don't run like it should and it's quite obvious there's an issue. these guys are winning races. That doesn't happen here with broken motors.

How many 996TT engines have you built?

POST 62Original post

50% of the threads here turn into a pissing contest. They should be marked in yellow.

Whatever dude, I read more threads than you. Fwiw, turbro guys out my way are more likely to do elective rebuilds than n/a owners on account of horsepower wars. Meaning, it's entirely plausible that double-bent rods are found on 'healthy' motors.

0. Not trying to argue with you. Just saying, the cars you get are broken to begin with. That's why they are in your shop in the 1st place. I'm saying not all of them will have bent rods.

Another idea for a swap would be a Subaru EJ257 with a big turbo. Easy to hit 400whp with matching torque figures and not have to cut up the car like an LS motor.

Last I read there where issues with the starters location. Not sure if anyone has overcome that yet.

thanks for the input. ya I was just looking to find out about options for the this infamous 3.4l lol In no way do I want to bash jake(if I can afford it one day I'd love to be able to use his services lol) and not really a desire to argue with people over engines. I just know I'm not he only one out there wishing there was some options out there for a little more umph from our motors. I have learned a few things from this thread, so far though so thank you for that lol

Interesting reading about these engines, also that this place uses Darton wet liners in its builds: http://dsportmag.com/the-tech/subaru...end-breakdown/

Keep in mind, you're talking about taking a Porsche from a 5s 0-60 car to mid-low 4s. Doing so 'on the cheap' via LS swap has been shown to cost >$20k. So, unless you have a buddy that's a fabricator and part-time engineer, you're not going to make the car faster for less than $20k. Doing so requires a lot of ingenuity & effort. If you want to feel Gs of acceleration and can't afford a turbo, buy a vette or a turbro'd 350z, etc. You will not find a cheap, reliable, fast solution in the world of Porsche. That combination just doesn't exist without some serious talent between your ears (which likely means you have the money anyhow).

awww!! You did it!! You responded with the dreaded cookie cutter "buy a ..." I have vett lol i have another porsche, ive had supras, stangs, camaros etc. i love this porsche and i have the funds to enlist mr jake if i wanted but i cant justify that kind of money into a $17k car. just out of curiousity i thought id see if someone has enraged the porsche gods and made some miracles happen with there 3.4l its all good though thanks
