I thought the headlights were used for DRLs in Canada.
Leading evidence: 'Use drls in canada' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace fog bulb or retrofitting an h7 in its place' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Also, are most using an H3 bulb to replace the fog bulb or retrofitting an H7 in its place when using them for DRLs?

The most dramatic change occurs in the first 100 hours of use, and they then slowly lose intensity and the color temperature drops.

My car has the fog lights wired as daytime running lights.

If you used a Bosch relay wired to provide power to the Fog light circuit when there is power to an AC circuit (such as windows) and cut the power when there is power to the marker lights, it would keep the Fogs on when the car was running, but cut the power when the headlight switch was in any position other than "off"...

A google search shows lots of different options including the "correct" way using relays and some wiring and then there are the hacks using a piece of wire to jump between fuses.

To keep the oem system in tact, I will likely use a standalone wiring relay system I purchased that has the ability to turn DRL on and off with ignition and dim DRL when headlights are turned on.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I am seeking suggestions for LEDs to convert my fog lights to DRLs. Most of the threads are a bit dated or unclear as to which color temperature would best match the Litronic (xenon) lights in our cars. Thanks in advance for your reply!
The Porsche OEM litronic system is rated at a color temperature of 4300 Kelvin. Of course, since "Color" is very subjective to many of the manufacturers, matching it perfectly can be a frustrating task.
Keep in mind that HID bulbs change in color and intensity over their effective life. The most dramatic change occurs in the first 100 hours of use, and they then slowly lose intensity and the color temperature drops.
Thanks to all for the replies. I have a 2001 996. I appreciate that it will not be perfect and may vary from car to car but has anyone had success with a certain manufacturer or reseller of LEDs? Also, are most using an H3 bulb to replace the fog bulb or retrofitting an H7 in its place when using them for DRLs?
I have actually given this some thought. If you used a Bosch relay wired to provide power to the Fog light circuit when there is power to an AC circuit (such as windows) and cut the power when there is power to the marker lights, it would keep the Fogs on when the car was running, but cut the power when the headlight switch was in any position other than "off"...
Bosch relays keep a circuit closed (ie, providing power) until you apply current to the second circuit. It then mechanically opens the first circuit.
You could tap this all in through the fuse box.
Standard procedure when importing a U.S. car to Canada where DRLs are required. Every Indy shop knows how to do this up here.
A google search shows lots of different options including the "correct" way using relays and some wiring and then there are the hacks using a piece of wire to jump between fuses. Mine was correctly done with a relay when it was imported by the previous owner.
Interesting. I thought the headlights were used for DRLs in Canada. The 997.1 has an option to activate the DRLs using the PCM unit. Doing so illuminates the headlights but not the rest of the exterior lighting.
It is standard in Canada and there are a number of posts on hacks that allow for a drl through the interior light switch. To keep the oem system in tact, I will likely use a standalone wiring relay system I purchased that has the ability to turn DRL on and off with ignition and dim DRL when headlights are turned on. What I am still seeking is a recommendation on a brand and/or vendor for H3 LEDs that have a close color to factory litronics. Thanks in advance.
I've used xenondepot before on a different vehicle. Excellent company to deal with.
They offer an H3 kit (Philips). No idea how hard it would be to fit the ballast inside the light housing, or how to make it work otherwise, but color would be near perfect match.

I've also seen LED strip lights (similar to 997 DRL) aftermarket install.
My car has the fog lights wired as daytime running lights. I have tried multiple bulbs over the years in an attempt to match my headlights. The LED H3 bulbs I tried were okay, but the only lasted a month before they stopped working. They were not nearly as bright though.
I have also tried white Silverstar H3 bulbs and a few others. My favorite bulb is the NOKYA NOK7415 Arctic White. Color is 7000K and it looks pretty close to the Litronic headlights. The main downside is that it only lasts a year or two when used as a DRL.
If you do find an appropriate LED bulb though I would definitely switch.
