Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

We rested a few days, the car held up fantastically, not even rock chips on the windscreen(this would change dramatically once in the Southwest).

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Dear fellow RLs:
I've been lurking on here for a while now, commenting here and there, but I never really did a proper intro post.
It's long overdue, thus here it comes:
After searching for a good few months, I bought my first Porsche, Arctic Silver with Red leather interior '99 C2.
Immediately upon giving up our apartment in Brooklyn, I flew to TN to buy the car. Which became the starting point of our epic, 7000miles roadtrip across the country.
Driving back to the East Coast to pick up the wife and a few things (clown car like did we fit way too much stuff into the 996) we went upon our journey. Up the coast to Portland ME, through the Adirondacks down to Ohio (on this part we discovered scenicbyways.info, a fantastic resource to find twisty roads and epic vistas). St. Louis was next, Kansas and OKC towards Santa Fe, NM. We rested a few days, the car held up fantastically, not even rock chips on the windscreen(this would change dramatically once in the Southwest).
We made our way up North a few days later towards Southwestern Colorado, stayed the night in Telluride, where the Porsche saw it's first snow.
The next morning, sunny as can be, the weather forecast was dire. Hailstorms and snow up to a foot on our planned drive through the Rockies towards Denver. So, change of plans. Of course, 10 minutes after driving off a huge hail storm hit us, full on, not a single underpass or gas station in sight, just rocks and valleys. Freaking out, we powered through. The car somehow remained with barely a dent.
Up North towards Dinosaur, then South to Moab. Fantastic drives, fantastic vistas, before heading North again to SLC to check in the Porsche Dealer for issues with steering (the tires were nearly shot, no issue otherwise).
We tried to do a speed test at the Bonneville Saltflats, but it was submerged in about 5 inches of water. So we went off road instead (fun if the TC is turned off).
From there we hightailed it South again, Route 12 and Mt. Zion (I fell in love), towards Death Valley. Then on the last leg through Mojave (again, off road) and Joshua Tree to Palm Springs, then Los Angeles.
The car held up tremendously. Since arriving in LA a few things started to go South, the slowly creeping traffic seems to have a dire effect on the car.
Sum up:
- 1 oil change, 1 quart fill up over 3k miles, another quart towards the end.
- 1 set of totally shot tires, including a slow leak in the rear.
- 3 weeks of fantastic driving, memories for a lifetime.
- 0 tickets. (Yes! I couldn't believe it myself, Silver is the way to go)
- 113 quick conversations about the car, at random gas stations across the country.
- 0 quick conversations since arriving in LA.
- 2 Hail storms, multiple full rain days. Not a leak.
- 125Mph max speed
- 20.9 Mpg overall
- about a third of the route on big highways, the rest on small ones or non-highways.
- Best roads? Wayne Natl. Park in SE Ohio, Rte 12 in Utah, 84 in NM
- "Libruls from NY" comments? Too many to count (we had a TN temp tag ?!?!)
- Casual racism? Quite a lot, mainly in Oklahoma
Well, since arriving in LA about 6 weeks ago I put another 5k in repairs/tires/maintenance into the car and try to drive it hard at least once a week. And the windscreen/dash has started to rattle like crazy. If fellow 996 owners in LA would like to get together, send me a pm and let's get to driving!
Tl;Dr
Bought a '99 C2 and immediately went on a cross-country road-trip, doing 7k miles total. Nothing went wrong on the car.
Ps: This forum has been tremendously helpful and sometimes nightmare-inducing. I hope to have access to a garage with tools soon to do most of the smaller repairs myself. Stay great, fellow RLs!
There was no car for on that straight for miles, both ways.
Thanks guys, it's an honor to be part of the rascals!
Now I gotta figure out that nasty windscreen rattle, it's driving me nuts (voiced in pirate speak)..
Awesome post and pics. What a great intro and an epic trip.
Sorry about the OK remarks. Racism was dying with the older generation. You just didn't see it except from old people in rural areas. All of the protests lately seem to be making it an us vs them issue again which is stupid. For politics, fine, football teams, fine but not for race. Too much bad history there. It just seems to be some peoples nature to find any petty excuse to put someone else down to make themselves feel better.
