Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. the other LN bearing says it need to be changed after so long.
Leading evidence: 'Replace after so long' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'cheapest guy' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check bearing' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I hate to say that something is too cheap, because I'm probably the cheapest guy on the forum....

I recently spoke to a shop in St Louis called ReidVann (recommended by the local dealer) and was surprised when they told me it would be about $3,000 for the IMS Solution including install.

In the end I found out the used a slide hammer to remove the bearing and charged me 3 extra hours to reset a shaft that skipped some teeth (probably because they didn't use the right tools).
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I've searched and searched couldn't find about how much labor would be to replace the ims bearing. I'm in north alabama and have a 2000 c2 cab. I think I'm going to use the eps bearing at a cost of $450 What would be your estimate on labor?

Independent Porsche repair shop. Non-dealer.
FYI, you might want to look into the IMS guardian. It may be a better route than replacing your existing dual row IMS, which has a fairly low failure rate, with an "inexpensive" retrofit.
Well, while we're on the subject of "Indy"....
As far as I understand;
Indy = Indianapolis
Indie = independent (record label, repair shop, etc..)
Back to IMS labor quotes, I'm curious too..
There aren't any Porsche shops around me. Closest dealer is Huntsville about an hour away. Nashville and Birmingham are both about 2 hours away. Are there any Porsche mechanics in Huntsville AL besides the dealer?
Rob,
Don't sell yourself short on the IMS replacement. Schedule an appointment with Jake Raby's team to install the IMS solution or Retrofit... and while you're at it, replace the clutch. You won't regret it. Jake co-owns the patent on the most reliable IMS replacement for the 996.

His shop is located in Cleveland Georgia. I know that's a 4 hour drive, but make it a vacation and take your family to Babyland General - home of the cabbage patch doll. hahaha! After you soaked up with baby dolls, take a ride up to the mountains. It's a blast.
Cheers!
p.s. GooooOOoOoOOOOoo DAWGS!!!
I have the receipt for my IMS upgrade from the PO. About 10 hours labor, and they did the RMS while they were in there. About 1000 bucks total here in Santa Fe.
$5k is to rich for my blood. I'll probably do it myself this fall. Clutch was done a few months ago by a dealer. The guy I bought it from was clueless about the ims problem. He had a good service history on the car. I'm going to call the dealer and see if they checked the bearing. If labor was around $1K at a independent porsche shop I would just let them do it.
Thanks
Mine was 1800 including the LN bearing. Old one was still okay and is a nice paperweight but I sleep better at night and accelerate better during the day
Just had mine replaced last Friday with new clutch. $500 to remove and install IMS bearing update and rear main seal. $1000 to remove and install clutch kit.
Porsche did mine along with the clutch just before I bought the car as part of the used car inspection before sale. The car was a trade in and had always been serviced with them since 2007 and 12k miles (I bought the car with 63k miles).They provided me the bill when I purchased the car. They charged 13hrs of labor and around 1450$ of parts (700 for the IMS bearing and 680 for the clutch kit). Here is a photo of the bill with all the details.
The only "permanent" fix available at this point is the "IMS Solution" from LNE/FSI... Although the EPS roller bearing is claiming that it's a "permanent fix", there is no real data to support such a claim (it's only been available for a year or two...). Caveat Emptor
Actually I didn't even ask for it. Hendrick Porsche did it through their own inspection. So it looks to me that as a Porsche dealer they are considering the potential of IMS failure on 996.
I found a porshe shop in birmingham that said they would install the eps system bearing for about $1100 labor. I think I'm going to let them do it instead of doing it myself.
Thanks for all the advice

it's to expensive. the other LN bearing says it need to be changed after so long. EPS just seemed to be a good choice to me. I know most want agree but to each his own.
I just had mine done at a Porsche dealer in Melbourne FL. They charged 10 hours, same as the Dealer in Rochester NY. I would agree about looking into an Indie to it. Not all of the Porsche dealers are the most experienced at doing this job. The dealer in Rochester FL, who did by Boxster did a wonderful job. The dealer in Melbourne wanted to charge me for the tools required to do the job. When I refused they called back and said they could borrow the tools. In the end I found out the used a slide hammer to remove the bearing and charged me 3 extra hours to reset a shaft that skipped some teeth (probably because they didn't use the right tools).
By the way I have a 2000 C2 and my IMS bearing was just fine when it was removed.
A slide hammer... So now they shock loaded your IMS assembly and helped it to separate, potentially increasing the chances of experiencing mode of failure #24.
Use the right tool, even if Porsche didn't invent it.

I recently spoke to a shop in St Louis called ReidVann (recommended by the local dealer) and was surprised when they told me it would be about $3,000 for the IMS Solution including install. Especially considering the part itself is $1800 and specialized tools aren't cheap. I've never worked with them so I can't vouch, but they came highly recommended from the dealer + owner of one of the 996s I was considering.
I hate to say that something is too cheap, because I'm probably the cheapest guy on the forum.... BUT at that prices there's no way that the installation will be carried out as prescribed.
David 23, I had the LN Engineering Pro Dual Bearing IMS Fix installed at "Design 911" in Montclair, CA (about one hour and 15 minutes west of Palm Springs). This is a very well respected shop owned by Loren Beggs. They work on everything from 356 to Cup Cars! Top Notch Professional Service and Fantastic Facilities too!!!
Thanks ntouched, I have driven by that shop several times, and have meant to stop and visit. The pic of the shop looks great, certainly clean and organized, always a good sign. Could you give me an idea of how much it cost to have the fix installed? You can PM me if you prefer.
