Previous to the 996 had a built '05 E55 (swapped Airmatic out for coilovers) it was crazy fun and I miss it.

Was so skeptical as everyone was, but having driven hundreds of air cooled 911s, after my first test drive, I couldn't deny that the 996 was an awesome car, that has alway stuck with me, bad reputation aside, years later I still know what a phenomenal car they are....

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Yeah, I expect this to set the high-water mark for early 996's, that looks about as nice as it can get. Someone is going to bitch about the 7 owners on the CarFax, might want to explain that in a comment if it is in fact stuff like moving across state lines, lease buyouts and the other reasons that owner figures get inflated on CarFax. Or maybe it just has had 7 very caring owners :-) Looks great though, GLWS!
Thanks, yes when I purchased the car I saw the six owners and didn't care due to the strength of its condition and the way it drove, even prior to me spending another $24k on it. The seller stated it was really three previous owners with title transfers and so on, but I have nothing to substantiate that...
I hate to see you are selling it. The only way (and funnest way) to get the value back out is by driving it. I'll guess it at 25k. But I hope it does bring 30.
I worked for Brumos Porsche in service when the 996 first came out. Was so skeptical as everyone was, but having driven hundreds of air cooled 911s, after my first test drive, I couldn't deny that the 996 was an awesome car, that has alway stuck with me, bad reputation aside, years later I still know what a phenomenal car they are....
Damn fine looking machine there
I love the guy that thought it might be an after market wing
I think the $25k range is probable, but I could see $28k if you get a couple of people that really like your particular setup. GLWS
That's a damn nice car. And BaT's the place for it-- the merits of 996 seem pretty well-known to that audience, as witnessed by recent discussions and sale prices.
Let me get this totally straight, you put 15mm spacers on wheels that have standard ET50 and ET65 and didn't experience any rub? WOW! That's a first! I see the rears being ok, but that brings the front offset to just 35mm. If that's not typo, then this is a first that I've heard it didn't cause any rub or knock on the fender edges.
Btw, beautiful car... one the nicest Mk1 I've seen! Hope it sells for what you need!
100% correct ^ effective 35et in front w/ zero interference, and that's with ride height about 1.25" lower than stock.
There are a couple of people on here who have done the same. I tried a friends 7mm first an saw there was more than enough room to go 15mm.
Beautiful car! Really looking forward to seeing the comments and closing price.
That's a lot of suspension work. Did you take it to the track or AX?
GLWS.
I'm really hoping you get close to $30k for it but someone is gonna nitpick and offer you $26k since it doesn't have the sport seats and CF interior option.
GLWS
Your 996 presents itself well, some nice upgrades and a good story on your aero Porsche. I'll have to follow BAT to see how you do. Can't imagine many 996 owners not wanting to see a MY99 reach $30k.GLWS
That's a top notch 996. Good job on the tasteful updates and strong presentation. This car should do well on BaT. This would be a fun DE/Driver combo - if only I had room for another one.
Thank you all for kind comments!
In answer to suspension cost, all of the parts totalled a little over $6k about another $1k in installation/tuning/height adjustments/alignment.
Hahahaa, its no shortage of love for it, I simply have auto-ADD. I only wish I could keep them all... All of the work is fresh, I've thoroughly enjoyed it, part of the thrill for me is the chase and the project, now is the time to sell.
I appreciate the precise answer!
In the planning phase, one can easily forget about the 'tuning' cost of suspension upgrades and the attention to details required to pay due respect to such exquisite components.
I can certainly relate. I had my 997tt for less than a year and my most recent prior car, '14 535i Msport was an amazing car, but I was tired of it after 6 months. My 996 is the first one that has felt just right though. Quirky, reasonable, sporty, mechanical, interesting and highly moddable. Oh ya, and I really enjoy driving it.
I don't really view this as competition as it's apples to oranges IMO.
Those that want a more strict performance oriented car will get the Aero for sure. Those that want a top heavy cruiser will get the Targa.

I agree, zero worries, two totally different buyers both just happen to be black 996s, now if you were to list your car right now....
Lol, can't compete with those Ohlin's, plus the anthracite BBS RS-GT's will be more appealing to the masses than my gold ones.
Anyone remotely interested in performance driving(street/DE/Track/Auto-X) would be a fool not to seriously look at your car. The smart ones will do the math and realize they probably can't replicate it for what they can probably buy your car for with everything sorted out and zero downtime. Get in and drive...
Currently at $24,500 I'd love to see it hit $30k but think it will top out around $28k. Once you're in the upper $20's you're competing against a lot of extreme low mileage Mk2 wide bodied C4S's. Although you do have the Aero crowd rooting for you.
Only 7 hours to go and still at $24,500. I hope for the sellers sake that there are several bidders out there waiting to bump it up at the last minute.
You absolutely right! Common practice on eBay and other online auctions. Most buyers fear a bidding war or shill bidding to drive up the price and so they wait until the last minute to place their bids. Shill type bidders are the poison of online auctions. Some do it to fraudulently get the most out of an auction and some do it to "game the system" because they like the *high* that it brings to drive up the price or compete with a legitimate buyer.
These types have NO desire to actually win the item.
I've been "gamed" several times when bidding early. I once placed a proxy bid of $2,000 on a used camera lens. Some nut then exploited a loop hole in eBay bidding process that allows you to retract a bid if you think you've entered the wrong amount. So this nutcase kept upping the bids in $50 increments until he was the top bidder. You have about 5 minutes to retract a "entered wrong amount bid". Once this guy became the top bidder, he retracted it down to $50 under my highest bid which made me the top bidder again. I won the item, but I didn't get the item for $200, but got it for $2000.00. Gulp! I was screwed and eBay wouldn't do anything about this guy. Personally, if you retract one bid, all bids should be retracted in my opinion, AND should no longer be allowed to bid on that item.
I've been on eBay for more than 15 years and they still don't listen to me. hahaha!
^ That was probably the seller doing that. I've had it done to me before also. That's why I typically don't put early bids in that are close to my top dollar. I'll put a low bid in early, then wait until the last minute to bid higher. Not really sniping - just trying to prevent the seller from pulling that crap.
Well, it's at $26,750 with several hours still to go, so my $26,000 guess isn't going to win the prize. Whoever has $28,000 or $29,000 is looking pretty good at this moment.
FWIW, ebay has a shill bidding detection system, although not fool proof, it does detect this for most avg users. If the various users are bidding from the same IP, it will detect it and raise a flag and that seller gets a warning.
It would undoubtedly be less expensive for me to by 5senna5's car than do the upgrades I'm planning on my car... Too bad the SO doesn't see it that way!
Yep! And they've done a lot to weed out fraudulent bidders, but you know and I know, that people who are serious about gaming the system will know many people from another state or even outside the country willing to place a bid or run up the bids. It's a bad mistake to ask someone on the same network. That's how the dummies get caught. I just wish that eBay would change the policy on bid retractions. Fortunately, I got burned when I was away on vacation and didn't have a iPhone, but now, I can bid anywhere with the ebay app and so I don't ever bid proxy because of that.
Cheers!
Yeah this would work if you have a lot of fellow shady buddies willing to do that and ones that have a high post count.
I tend to be suspicious at high bidding rate items where most of the bidders have low feedback. I often see these sell at some rediculous amounts only to be relisted again the next week. LOL.
5senna5, was just reading the comments on the auction and you are wrong about the side markers.
All US spec cars had the amber side markers. Yours were replaced at some point in it's life.
We are the original owners on our 01, built it with the Litronics, and it came with the orange markers that we didn't swap out until about midway through it's life. We still have them in the basement (that woman just won't let go of stuff
).
If that changes someone's mind about bidding they need to be smacked
Hell if I can sneak them out of the house without her noticing I'll send you ours that you can pass on if someone is picky about it
Also, Pete just bought my car for $34,000. I have the legally binding texts to prove it. Wait till he finds out its a 1997 Miata that I lovingly refer to as an 02 targa.
I wanted to post that I bought my 99 aero C4 almost two years ago with 31K miles for $22K. I just have no idea why somebody would pay that much for that car......but glad for 5senna5!
Wow! best of luck with finalizing the sale!
How was it dealing with BAT? Is it a easy process listing with them? I have my car listed in the classifieds here and thought about trying it with them after seeing that C4S go for big money a couple of months ago..
The process was easy, however they are fairly choosey over what they will list. They will also push for a low reserve since a passed lot is a waste for them. With a flat $250 seller's fee it's a no brainer... If they accept your car, do it. The buyer's pool is enormous, educated, and has the means to purchase. As much as I love sites like this, most are enthusiast tire-kickers when it comes to classifieds. Cars don't exactly fly out of here, same old threads resurrected ad infinitum....
Seems like a good place to list and congrats on the sale.
However I bought my 03' last year for $22,900.... Can't seem to see how some of these are selling near or above the $30k mark... All my car needed was a few small maintenance items and brakes. If I was going to shell out $30k plus I would be in a 997 not a 996
You should take a look at the list of mods on that BaT car again... the wheels alone likely outstrip the value added items, if any, on the '99 you sold for $22K.
Exactly, and sites like BAT are the one's that attract buyers that can appreciate and see value in tastefully modded cars as well, especially a 996 that is no where near collectable and can be more desireable on top quality modifications.
I'd like to hear from 5senna5 once he has cashed the check. His 1999 was exceptional but $35,250?? WOW!! In spite of all the nice add ons it had I still would have guessed top of the market to be around $30k.
Wire transfer arrived in under 24 hours and buyer flew in this morning. It was pretty cool seeing him get ecstatic over the car. Def went to a good home.
Damn that was a fast transaction. One of the best transactions you could probably hope for. Congrats again on finalizing the sale in a very prompt manner.
What's next?
I'd like a CLK63 Black Series, although it's upper limit of what I'd like to spend. Next car will be an AMG Benz, I usually switch back and forth. A 2013-4 C63 coupe (reworked) is also a strong contender. Previous to the 996 had a built '05 E55 (swapped Airmatic out for coilovers) it was crazy fun and I miss it. Sold it to a friend who immediately wrote it off...
