Suggestion

So if you change the speakers - they are lower impedance so you need to change the amp, unless you are able to get non standard door woofers.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am interested in replacing the OEM head unit in my 99 996. It has the CDR-210 (code 490) and a small amp in the frunk. I am not really keen on doing any splicing/modifying the wiring harness, hoping I can do it with just plugs (preferably a drop in!). I'd be OK with single DIN too. I'm not too fussy on utilizing the OEM amp, and I would be OK taking it out, I just don't really want to muck with wiring. I saw in the 993 forum there was a good how-to for installing the Continental TR7412UB-OR (which I think I would like to go with - just looks right in a Porsche) but not having much luck finding a comparable guide for the 996. I did a search and it might be the lack of my searching ability, but didn't find what I was looking for. Simple process? Any guides? Thanks again folks!

Thanks, yeah I tried to google it but I am having a hard time wading between people that have no amp, bose amp or Nokia amp (what I have) and the 986 and even 993 (no idea how they differ). I should almost just buy one and some cable adapters and just start tinkering I guess.

POST 4Original post

You can get a harness that plugs into the car wiring harness and has individual wires to connect to the new unit's harness

POST 5Original post

Crutchfield is a great resource. They have all the harnesses you would need. My wife bought me a newer head unit from there but she ordered the wrong harness. They sent me the correct harness free of charge. I've used them for numerous car stereos over the years.

POST 6Original post

CAI-Store.com Just ordered an Alpine replacement for my non Bose becker cdr220. It comes with the tools to remove old deck and a direct plug and play 30 second install with their own wire harness made in house.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am darn tempted to go with the 996 Alpine packaged solution CAI has but man, that Alpine just does not look great in the photos for a Porsche. Those of you that have it does it look good in the dash with the amber lighting?

POST 8Original post

Hey, I have a '99 and changed out all the speakers, head unit and amp. I did do some wiring and it was not difficult but it depends on your skillset. There is a harness kit available you'll need that and an antenna adapter. Its easy to wire in the new deck to the harness kit then just plug it in. However... your problem isn't just your deck. The stock speakers are terrible. Really you likely wont notice much of a difference if you get a new deck. It may be a tad louder but it will still sound meh with those speakers. The stock amp is also terrible so consider that also. The Nokia amp takes the inputs from front and rear and splits one of them to doors as well, so it's kinda wired funny. 4 inputs go in and 6 come out. So if you change the speakers - they are lower impedance so you need to change the amp, unless you are able to get non standard door woofers. Fronts and backs are componets (a mid and a separate tweeter) but you can put 4" 2-way or 4" components in their place with a little modification. I can walk you through it if you want just PM me, but you need to determine what exactly you are doing first. Good luck!
