Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Reported cause
Which turned out to be an epic messy failure when I dropped the drain plug.
Leading evidence: 'epic messy failure' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'epic messy failure' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check dipstick' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Only check the oil level cold, and on level ground.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

oh **** .... since last oil change , not by me but by reputable shop from prior owner, approx 1800 miles has gone by. Checked oil level 900 miles ago ... down two bars. Checked 9 days ago by dip stick looked fine even full. Today before afternoon drive, pic #1 two bars above fill line ? , hhhhmmmmm. 20 mile drive / most things warmed up it is pic #2, 1 flickering bar thats it . No oil on ground normal suction on oil cap while engine running. No sounds or anything beyond normal . So need some thoughts before call goes to the wrench tomorrow.
Thx much
Having trouble loading pics but will persevere
Only check the oil level cold, and on level ground. The engine can;t run for at least 12 hours before the oil check, and I prefer 24 hours.
If you don;t do this, you'll end up with oil level indications all over the place.
I've about figured out when doing my oil change that just below the bottom indicator on the dipstick will be almost exact midpoint the next day.
And yes I have had to drain some out from over filling before I figured that out. Which turned out to be an epic messy failure when I dropped the drain plug. There has to be a better way to do that.
Ok so the first dash check this afternoon , was after a day and a half of garage sitting. Again on the two bars above bottom fill mark. Should I just rely on the dip stick ? Dang pictures still defying me. Really appreciate the the info. 46k miles how much should I be burning for 1500 miles ?
Slakker if you have to take some oil out due to an over fill, simply unscrew the oil filler and empty it out and tighten the filler again. No need to remove the drain plug.
Trust your dipstick. While my dash indication is usually pretty close, I only use it for a general feel-good. Dipstick has not only never been wrong, it's consistent. But - measure it as Jake suggests.
Listen to this guy. I've been monitorting my engine liek a hawk since I rebuilt it.
I can check the oil 6 hours after driving it and its missing 2 bars. check it the next day and its full.
I don't know if you realize the whole oil gauge only represents 1 qt and not the entire oil contents. I see newbs freak out all the time just because they are 1 or two bars low. Plus, real men check the dipstick.
Big boy pants on , chin strap buttoned up too. This morning cold, it was looking 80% on the stick. Good expeditious coaching especially from Semper Fi himself. Grateful for the time on a noob. On to nxt hurdle
This, I only really use the gauge to note if there is oil in it, and after that it's off to driving.
If oil loss was that much (let's say a quart or two, or something that'd make a difference) I'd see a puddle or smoke, and lacking that I just blame the gauge and the oil being hot or not all in the pan.
IMO
Worked on leather seats today and planning for a Palomar run nxt week. Oil still about 80% on Dip and two bars below arrow on dash when stone cold. Big boy pants ready , despite Mrs T given the evil eye. Might do Topanga for fun this week as a warmer upper. Love driving a 911 w top dwn in the summer. Again great forum. Gotta figure out how ta get 3 hounds as co pilots locked and loaded too. Woof
