Michelin Pilot Sports are considered the best but expensive in comparison to others, but many have used Bridgestone and Sumi for your C4S as alternatives.

Both the seller and my uncle who is a 996 owner who vetted the car for me agree that the rears should be replaced before I embark on the 1400 mi journey.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi everyone- brand new first-Porsche owner here. I'm looking for some advice on new rear tires (and likely fronts as well).
2003 C4S. Black on black. 6 speed. I'll post pictures soon (it was in need of a wash on the photos I have). I got a screaming good deal on it and will be driving her from Denver back home to Louisiana soon. Both the seller and my uncle who is a 996 owner who vetted the car for me agree that the rears should be replaced before I embark on the 1400 mi journey.
Current rears are Michelin Pilot Sport 295/30-ZR18s.
Can anyone recommend a good replacement? This will be my daily driver, not planning on tracking it. I'd like to replace the tires with something suitable for daily use and that will hold up as long as possible. I'm thinking that 'sport/performance' tires wear faster - are there 'touring' tires available that would be a good option? Or is the mere suggestion blasphemy?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Definitely blasphemy but we'll let it slide since you haven't driven it yet. You might look at the Sumito HTR Z III. They are performance tires but cheap enough that you can afford to replace them more often. Check into your local PCA club and go to one of their car control clinics. It is usually an excellent learning experience and a good way to understand you car's capabilities in a safe environment.
Thanks everyone. I had already priced the Sumitomos on Tirerack.com and noticed the significantly lower price. Wasn't sure if there was a reason for that or if they were to be avoided for some reason.
They sound like a good choice for me.
And I'll definitely check out the class with PCA. Thanks again.
My '03 C4 came with new SUMITOMO - HTR Z III and I'm very happy with them. You cannot beat the price. Enjoy your trip home and many more miles to come!
Sumitumo HTR-ZIII's best bang for the buck out there. You'll go thru a set of rears every 10k. Fronts will last 30k. If you have unlimited resources by all means try Michelins or Pirelli's but I like the Sumitumo's because they free up funds $$$ for other repairs.
You guys are speaking my language- why pay more if the Sumitomos are quality?
Thanks for all of the input. I'm sure I'll have more questions as I get to know the car.
Now I just have to speed the clock up three weeks- between work and kids the earliest I can go pick her up is first week of August. :/
