There are no water issues I have checked the fused but the same fuse controls the windows and inst cluster also and they work fine.
Leading evidence: 'Check fused' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check fused' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

You will either need to find an expert that can match up a used immobilizer to the rest of your system, or you will have to buy new key head remote(s) and transfer the original pill over and program the new used immobilizer brain to the new keyhead/pill/ecu.

It requires programming by a dealer and/or expert to both the keys and ecu assuming the original used immobilizer wasn't in an "armed" state to begin with.

Suggestion
Also, if you're good with electronics, you can always first try taking apart the immobilizer to inspect for any corrosion or burnt trace marks and reflow solder on those paths.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My physical lock didn't work when I got my car either.
Hey there, I've been around the 'list for quite a while on the 993 and 912 forums. I just bought an '03 C4 from a friend of mine for an embarrassing price (222k mi) and am in the process of fixing the items he overlooked over the last few years. I am surprising excited about getting into the 996 arena. I have been in existing threads regarding PSE and have a clear direction there but these is an item (or several) that I have searched for to no avail... Here's what I got...
1) central locking does not work
2) key fob is not working/non-existent
3) mechanical door lock does not function (car has not locked for years)
4) ignition switch was replaced ~3 years ago
5) gas flap doesn't lock
6) there seems to be no alarm system function at all
But
1) Windows work as designed
2) radio is fine
3) command center and all steering column stalks work
I suspect there is central item that is a fault but have little auto electronics experience...HELP PLEASE
Obligatory pics...oh I have never figured out multiple pics...
Welcome Ponch!
If it makes you feel better, the key fob on my 996tt doesn't work either (although I can lock it manually with the key and the dash switch).
Nice looking car and 222k! Wow! I think we'd all love to know as much back story as possible as to what has and hasn't been done to it over the years.
As to your main question, the security module is under the passenger seat. It should not keep the physical lock from working though I don't think. You might start with checking the fuses if you haven't already. If the fuses are good then the security module is your prime candidate. It's a common failure if water gets into the cabin as its one of the lowest points for water to collect.
Edit: or is it under the driver seat? I always forget. There are only two to look under though
The fact that your central locking also doesn't work usually indicates flooded or water damaged immobilizer which can be found under the seat. It's going to be a fairly expensive fix though. You will either need to find an expert that can match up a used immobilizer to the rest of your system, or you will have to buy new key head remote(s) and transfer the original pill over and program the new used immobilizer brain to the new keyhead/pill/ecu.
But first, check the onboard fuse on the immobilizer itself. You could get lucky and it could just be a blown fuse. Also, if you're good with electronics, you can always first try taking apart the immobilizer to inspect for any corrosion or burnt trace marks and reflow solder on those paths.
Also as a sidenote, if you're CF steering wheel is crack free, I'd be waxing that sucker every week and getting a cover for it everytime you park. I can't tell from the pic.
My physical lock didn't work when I got my car either. There should be a rod which connects the lock barrel to the latch mechanism; in my case I found this lying at the bottom of the door. The walk through & pictures on the Pelican site were super helpful in taking the door apart.
Thx all for y our responses...
kcattorney - If I could do that I would be a happy camper... but, I believe, without the immobilizer functionality I can't lock the passenger door in my best case future???
Triple Black - If the FOB would fix I would gladly pay the price...
Dan_189 - Yes those are my2002 5 spoke and I agree, I've had them for about 10 years... ready for new paint
Barn996 - Thx, yes I also like the interior color one of the reasons I bought it. NOt at all afraid of mileage... you drive it, it breaks, you fix it and drive it more...
gnat - part of the back story is that here n so Oregon/northern California (let's please not call lit cali!) we are blessed with some terrific roads and we in the local CPA drive the $hit out of them. It i is not uncommon to have a 300-400 mile day or a 1,000 weekend with 6 to 12 cars. The 996 was purchased with 46,000 miles from the original owner and my friend put the next 180,000 on it over ~ 10 years. As for the 993 I bought it in 2003 with 62,000 and put the next 100,000 on it. Both daily drivers also. There are no water issues I have checked the fused but the same fuse controls the windows and inst cluster also and they work fine. I will check under the seat(s) it see that all plugs are intact.
alpine003 - Thx for the heads up on the local fuse, I will check that. Do you know if I can get one from a dismantler and replace it then figure out the key fob issues? Aw far as the wheel yes it is CF
and yes it is trashed.. the wheel will be going to Poland for a little R&R in a few weeks.
AWDGuy - least of my worries also, and I thing when/if everything else gets working this will just go away.
JimmyB - Thx for the heads up on the Pelican DIY. I will look for the rod but there is not external keylock on the passengers side so I don't know what use it will be.
Just a little addenda... I plan on making a rallyish' build out of this in order to run the fire roads around here. I have the full support of the past owner "have-at-it".. he is past it now with the arrival of his 2013 triple black S...wouldn't it be nice???
Looking forward to your list of issues being solved with the always eager Rennlist followers. I owned a '68 Porsche 912 in the mid 70s for a brief time, before I broke my left foot in a dirt bike accident. Couldn't clutch with a cast. GL with your fixes.
Unfortunately no, it's not as easy as that. It requires programming by a dealer and/or expert to both the keys and ecu assuming the original used immobilizer wasn't in an "armed" state to begin with.
