Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

This year I installed Yokohama Advan Neovas on my '02 C2 and they've been great. However, I've learned that if I store them in temps below -10C, the rubber will crack. We hit -20 here on a regular basis over the winter, so I have to come up with a solution. My buddy has offered a spare set of 16" rims & tires off of his 964 C4, but I'm not sure they'll fit. A pic of what the rims look like is attached. He won't be back in town for a couple of weeks, so I can't find out for myself until it's too late. Will these rims clear my brakes? Would 7mm or 15mm spacers help? If it's close, I could swap rims at the storage site and not drive on them. If they don't clear, any cheap suggestions? Is there such a thing as a metal stands that I could bolt the hubs to? How about fabricating wooden cradles to rest the brake rotors on? Thanks, Joe

POST 2Original post

is this just to store the car.... not drive? do you not drive it in the winter at all? <worried> I cant wait that long, I will HAVE TO drive it SOME this winter (first winter as a p-car owner)

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just to store the car. I don't have space at my house to have it during the winter (no overnight parking on the street for my other cars), otherwise I'd sneak it out on the cold dry days. We have 5-6 months of snow, sand, and salt. I tried winter driving here when I had a 350Z. It wasn't much fun, and I was too worried about somebody hitting the car.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I want to keep the weight on the suspension.

POST 6Original post

I have 16" forged turbo cup rims... and they don't fit over the front brakes of a 996. I think 17" is a minimum for the fronts. (3 piece racing rims, like Fikse, might fit...) Why would you want to keep weight on the suspension? Most people agree it's best to unload the suspension when you store a car.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

From my research, the majority are saying to keep the weight on the suspension. The arguments I found were... For Once the car is in position, place the car on jack-stands. The reasoning for this is two-fold: 1) it takes the strain off suspension components, thus slowing the aging on such components as bushings and shocks 2) it prevents your tires from developing "flat spots" Against If you hang it up in the air on the frame with all of the suspension components dangling at full extension you will put stress on the parts that they were not designed to tolerate. Both arguments sound good to me... guess I'll just go with the more convenient one

POST 9Original post

I don't see how the hanging weight of the rotors/brake components is anything to worry about in comparison to the shock/load/unloading that those components deal with during normal use.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quoting a knowledgeable friend I just talked to: "The suspension bushings are set to have no pre-load at ride height, that means they're twisted when the wheels are hanging. These bushings are stiff enough to affect ride height, so they are under a lot of stress at full droop. There's no damage to shocks or springs in either position so it's only tires and the bushings you have to worry about."

POST 11Original post

16"s won't fit. They don't fit on the Boxster S which uses the same 996 front brakes. They "could" fit in the rear though

POST 12Original post

16" won't fit on the rear of a Boxster S. What about spare tire(s) if maybe one end doesn't fit the 16"?

POST 13Original post

How about 4 cheap *** compact spare wheels from a dismantler?

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I thought about that, but don't want to spend much as it will likely only be for this year... and by the time the wheels get shipped to Canada, it'll be a small fortune. The plan now is to put jack stands under the control arms.
