Now, the car is not pristine, certainly not for only 37k miles...but it has had all the services, including full 30k, and ahs had the coolant expansion tank replaced (surprise...not), but all 4 wheels had various degrees of rash, from slight to gash, the PO had leftt he key in the ign for in his garage for weeks, since he drove it, and the battery was dead as can be, when we jumped it, he put the cables on BACKWARDS for a few seconds until I saw the smoke from the jumper cable rubber on the clamp, I quickly yanked mine, we reversed them, and the car started.

You should be able to get to the upper thirties for your car selling to a private party and maybe more if you run into someone looking for your color.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I recently got a Turbo and as a result am thinking about selling my 2002 carrera. The specs are Basalt Black/Blk Sport seats (heated), 6 speed, 31K miles, flared rocker panels, perfect condition ... needs nothing with all services up to date. Ofcourse I'd say this, but I think it's one of the nices 02 911s I've ever seen. What do you think it's worth? My local dealer thinks low 30s for a dealer purchase. What would it be worth to a private party?

POST 2Original post

I think pricing is subjective and vary from locations (States). You should look around in your area, like RL or local newspaper Ads etc... and see how much such a car goes for. Of course you will have to factor-in the options and mileage but at least you will have an idea of a price range. Good luck! Cheers.

POST 3Original post

For a quick ballpark, have a look through Autotrader.

POST 4Original post

Unless you like leaving money on the table or are too busy to sell it yourself, ignore your local dealer. You should be able to get to the upper thirties for your car selling to a private party and maybe more if you run into someone looking for your color.

POST 5Original post

Also check with Kelley Blue Book, Edmunds etc to get 'benchmarks" on value as a guide. Your dealer is giving you a lowball value...what a suprise!

POST 7Original post

If you'd bought the turbo from the dealer, the difference in their offer vs. private market would've been offset, to an extent by tax savings

I've read this a few times and don't get it. How is there a tax difference between buying from a dealer and a private seller?

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I live in Kansas City, MO. In Missouri you can get a sales tax credit if you buy and sell a car i.e. if you sell a car for 10K and buy another car for 15K, when registering you pay tax on the delta 5K.

Say you're purchasing a car for 50k, you have a car (trade in) they are giving you 40k for. You would be paying tax on the differnce of those two numbers (your taxable subtotal). Let's say you could sell that same car via private party for 43k, great, you'd be + 3k over what dealer offered..but, you'd be paying tax on the full 50k of the car you're purchasing (barring any money upfront). Let's do the math and see if, in this instance, it makes sense. For simplicity sake, we'll assume you own your car outright (although if you don't - it won't affect your taxable subtotal, but will affect your final total). Using Tx. tax rate of 6.25% 50k taxed at 6.25 = 3125 10k taxed at 6.25 = 625 3125-625=2500. Selling your car via private party for 43K would be in your favor in this instance by $500. It's a rudementary example, but there it is! *EDIT* Of course, if you sold your car via private party for 43k and purchased another car from private party for 50k - it's between you and the seller as to what they claim it was sold for

POST 11Original post

Let me know what you come up with for a fair price. I'm looking for an '02 996 coupe to use as a track car.

POST 12Original post

In VA, where the rate is 3%, the DMV will NOT let you pay tax on less than the NADA trade in, by very much, even with a Bill of Sale, which they require the original!! I jsut bought an 02 C2 in Seal gray, black full leather seats, supple, heated, comfort package, technic, 18's, rear wiper, color crests, plus full leather steering wheel with leather airbag, PSM, plus it had new tires and new front pads & rotors, (less than 1000 miles on both), car has 37.5k miles and I paid $32k. DMV wanted me to pay sales tax on $34k, even though I had a Bill of sale and a copy of the bank check. I politely argued that the condition of the car reduced it to $32k. (hey $60 is $60 ), and they agreed in the end. However, the radio was dead, and I found a number of things not working, (fogs, headlight washer, rear spoiler, and a dead segment on the CC), or broken, like both mirror triangle interiors., there are some hairline cracks in the front bumper where it looked like someone backed into the car.I told him I wasn't interested at his asking price of $35k, since the first thing I'd have to do was take it to the dealer for a checkout, and I had a stack of printouts to show him the going asking price. He believed me, and we settled on $32k, with me assuming all risk. I know enough about car wiring and electronics that I'd bet all issues were fuses. As it tuurned out, it was the 10A fuse behind the radio, and all fogs had burned out bulbs, and he didn't know how to raise the spoiler of use the headlight washer) everything works perfect now, tho I still have a lot of detail work to do.

POST 13Original post

if you don't sell it here....apparently our cars go for significantly more closer to the canadian border, where their dollar has much more value than in the recent past. Washington area, or maybe up by Montreal? Just a suggestion. j

Unfortunately, that's not the way it works in California. If you buy a car from a dealer or private party you pay sales tax on the selling price. Your trade-in is just part of how you pay for the car. As another poster mentioned, California sucks. BTW - sales tax in my county is 8.25% - like I said, California sux. Of course I can drive my 996 year 'round.

POST 15Original post

Here in missouri, you get the tax break whether you trade it in or sell it outright. You get 6 months from the time you buy your new car to sell the old car and get the tax break.
