Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I'm sure the floor won't stay that clean much longer.

My plan was to make this my "winter project", pull the motor tear it down and then deceide what direction to go with it (rebuild vs replace).

Replace the coolant tank, cap and level sender when replacing the motor.

However, when it came time to replace the motor I worked a deal with the local Porsche dealer for $7500 on a new one with all components installed and warrantied for 2 years....plus those new motors have all of the updates done to them.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I've been an aircooled guy for a long time now, but came across a 996 that needs some attention (read motor replacement). The car runs, burns clean, but has been diagnosed with spun rod bearings... Anybody know of a good place to find a good motor for a decent price? Also, the rear plastic window has come unglued across the bottom and halfway up both sides, something that can be fixed or does the top need to be replaced?
Thanks
Keith

I think your choices of year, body style, color and wheel option are SPECTACULAR! I just picked mine up 1 week ago. I have the same question about the rear window.
.....nice garage!
Keith, I'm in the middle of my second project 996. Silver Star Recycling has been fantastic. I have bought several vehicles from them, along with numerous parts. Their website is
www.silverstarrecycling.com
and their number is [phone removed]. Ryan Jones is the manager. Good Luck on your project!
thanks for all the comments on the garage... I've only been in the house for about 2 month's now, so this 996 project will be my first change to "break the garage in". I'm sure the floor won't stay that clean much longer. I'm trying to sort out what direction to go with the motor. My plan was to make this my "winter project", pull the motor tear it down and then deceide what direction to go with it (rebuild vs replace). I've found some what I would consider reasonable prices on rebuilt motors ($5500) that makes me question if it's worth my effort to do a rebuild.. I'd like to put something in there that's going to be reliable for years to come without spending an arm and a leg to get there..
If the rebuilt motor you are looking at is from "Einmalig" (on ebay) please be very careful. They sold me two alternators that they claimed were "new". They were used cores (per my dealer). They were both worthless. I fought with them for almost a year before they gave me a partial store credit. I could not give them a negative feedback on ebay (which I'm very reluctant to do) because the transaction took too long.
The garage and cars look great.
Thanks for everyone's input.. Based on the research that I've done on these cars, I think the factory rebuild solution is the best way for me to go. Anyone have an idea of what a factory rebuild retails for? Still looking for input on the back window coming unglued...
The last time someone posted the price of a Porsche remanufactured engine it was in the $11k - $12k range. You might want to check with Sunset Imports [phone removed] (Porsche Dealership in Oregon), they sell parts for cost +15%.
For the read window, take your car to an auto upholstry shop. They should be able to sew it in for $250 - $300 +/-.
Just buy a replacement motor from Porsche, it's complete (but no flywheel or clutch) and comes with a warranty. Replace the coolant tank, cap and level sender when replacing the motor.
I will back up Mark on Silver Star recycling... Ryan helped me rebuild my 996 and was a pleasure to deal with!
However, when it came time to replace the motor I worked a deal with the local Porsche dealer for $7500 on a new one with all components installed and warrantied for 2 years....plus those new motors have all of the updates done to them. Seemed like a better way to go.
