Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I know in my 2001 they replaced the coolant tank, but I don't think they replaced all the hoses....
Leading evidence: 'Replace coolant tank' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Suggestion
Its easy to remove the entire filter assy with the line attached (some kind of quick disconnect on the line)

Suggestion
My 01 C4 had this mounted up next to the tank with a fuel line running each way.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Well found a puddle on the floor tonight and will throw it up on the lift to find the source now.
Color is clear/gold not red, and coming from the driver rear and the coolant expansion tank is below the min line so am ASSuming coolant. Have searched and think I know what to look for.
Question: Is it appropriate to refresh all hoses, pump, and tank now? Car has 45k on it.
Coolant tank leak is a very common problem... wouldn't be surprised.
I know in my 2001 they replaced the coolant tank, but I don't think they replaced all the hoses.... just the cracked tank.
Ok lift inspection confirms it. No active leak now, but do see some coolant collected on the body under the tank and on the tank itself is white crust in one spot that I can see. Will get the tank tomorrow and do it in the evening (right before packing for Daytona I guess). Any parts to get other than the tank? And anything I should do other than the tank while I have that section of the upper motor taken apart?
Replace the level sender and buy new screw type hose clamps listed in the TSB. I ordered them from Porsche and have the part numbers on an invoice somewhere if you need them. You only need to remove the air snorkle and take the air pump off to get the tank out. The fuel rail also needs to be disconnected. Make sure you cap off the fuel bungs to keep any stray dirt out of your fuel system. Not a really hard job, just a PITA to wriggle the thing out. It took me 2 hours.
Check the part number on your coolant takk cap. If it ends in 01, then you have the latest version. If it ends in 00 (which were prone to leak) then get a new cap with the part number ending in 01.
I just experienced the same circumstance.
I did the tank, cap, t-stat, waterpump and all the hoses.
I may seem a bit extreme, but I wanted to address all of the possible coolant issues in the future.
Would love the clamp part numbers if you have them! Worked last night to get it out and have removed the air pump. Cannot seem to get the darn thing out yet. In the Renntech article it shows an early 996 with the fuel hoses. This is not the arrangement in the Mk II cars and I have a big ol' fuel rail in the way. Anyone have pictures/details on how to safely remove. I did not care for the tugging. Also, with the lower hose that faces the engine the clamp is facing the firewall and is impossible to get loose. So that lower hose is hitting the fuel rail. The other issue is that massive hose underneath the tank that restricts lowering the tank down cleanly from the mount. Thanks for everyones help.
Check on Renntech with a search.
If you Dremmel the edge off one of the mounting tabs it makes things a lot easier... there are pictures there somewhere.
Some cars have a different arrangement for the fuel filter.

The hose clamps are a bitch to remove, the screw type are much easier to re-install.. i used long nosed pliers and the hose clamp with slowly rotate around so i could get a good grip on the tangs. All hoses should be off before you start to try to move the tank
To get the tank out you have to really wriggle it about. It will bump against the fuel rail on the engine a lot... its a very tight fit and you have to angle and rotate just right to get it out (the dremmel trick really really helps with those last 2-3mm clearance)
As others have said, remove the level sensor. On post-2000 cars this is easy with the tank in any position, 1/4 turn and it pulls out.
It comes out one way and one way only! The frustrating part is finding the proper pitch, roll and yaw to wiggle it out. Following are the part numbers I have (don't recall the TSB number though):
999.512.554.00 hose clamp 20mm
999.512.552.00 hose clamp 25mm
999.512.551.00 hose clamp 36mm
999.512.499.00 hose clamp 42mm
999.512.348.00 hose clamp 49mm
I don't remember which ones I used, but I did buy extras. I have also attached a photo of remote spring clamp pliers. This makes getting those pesky spring clamps easy to remove and fit just about anywhere. I live near Route 28 & 50 if you need to use the pliers.
That is a very nice tool! Bought the tank today and finally got the old one out this evening. Have tried to put the new one in this evening but ran out of time. It has not been an easy job, but I am patient.
Will resume the task when I get back on Monday. Stephen - I may take you up on the offer next week.
