The suspension is not adjustable, unless an aftermarket setup was installed on the car.
Leading evidence: 'Install on the car' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean ...almost perfect' (1 discussions). I paid $35K for mine and it was clean...almost perfect but I guess not quite.

They (the dealer) would then process the title change for me.

IIRC, there are too many additional changes required to convert to a 3.6L engine.

well apparently this is a C4 (I tried to run the VIN online)
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm thinking about trading in my 2004 325ci (which I kept immaculately) towards a 996. I want the later one with the larger engine (which is 2002 or newer, correct?) and it has to be a coupe and under $40k. Any mileage less than 70 or 80k is acceptable.
This is nearby- worth having a look? I would really appreciate any comments (or even sales pitches) Thanks guys.

Take your time and find the right car - you will be much happier. There are a lot out there, be patient. My first impression of this one is "dirty". The car was not even cleaned up before the photo.
My 2004 C2 Coupe is for sale. I am located 2 hours from you on Concord, just norteast Charlotte. It has 44,600 miles on it and I am asking $46,000, or best offer. Here is a link to the ad in the classifieds.

PM or email me if you have any questions. I can send you additional pics if needed.
2002 and up are the years to look at. Lots of improvements over the prior years. Just remember that these cars are all about the options. Almost everything is an option, so do a detailed search on the cars, understand what options are a "must have" for you, and begin your search. Don't rush. I spent 4 months looking for my first one.
I REALLY like the manual-slider seats with motors for tilting the bottom of the seat up and down on my 944. It looks like the stock seats haven't changed shape much, although some of the sport seats I saw looked really great.
Main things I would want would be traction control on a car this expensive (I'm sure it would annoy me a lot, but I'd rather be annoyed than wrecked in the event that I mess up), an LSD (expensive I imagine), and M030 (is that ride-height adjustable for the 996s? I know its the gotta-have suspension package for most porsches).
C4 and C2 is just carrera rwd and carrera 4wd, correct? I've never had anything other than RWD, how different is the C4?
How's the headroom for a helmet? Does not having a sunroof increase the headroom?
If you get a C2, PSM (Porsche Stability Management) is an option. I would never get a car without it. It was standard on the C4. The suspension is not adjustable, unless an aftermarket setup was installed on the car. The US spec suspension is set too high, but has to be due to DOT regulations. It is not uncommon to find a car with an aftermarket suspension - PSS9's, X74, M030, etc. Lastly, you need to drive both the C2 and C4. They are both very different. Personally, I am a AWD type - but everyone is different.
I love this line from the ad:
The 911 Carrera (996) is more than a cool car with great styling. It's iconic. There's no substitute for the performance, comfort, or fun.
Not to mention their reputation for reliabilty.
You won't get much of an argument from this board, but as for an actual *reputation* for reliability...that's tenuous.
That all said, the car in the ad looks just like mine, except I don't have PSM. I don't miss the PSM, and contrary to a previous post in this thread, I don't think it's necessary or even particularly desirable. My car's behaviour at the track recently was impeccable. PSM SchmeeSM.
Lot's of cars in your price range. I paid $35K for mine and it was clean...almost perfect but I guess not quite. Try to find one with a new engine already, although I looked and looked and there were precious few available. Other than that, drive as many as you can. Stick to the MkII cars if you can afford them (the price gap isn't that big).
I don't need to bore you - You've read the posts - go and buy one. You will NOT regret it.
Someone said something about the other car being "dirty" and I guess I should mention that, although I am as **** about cars as any of you, I don't want a concourse car or anything because I'm probably going to be running this one nearby (into) some cones. I know it seems crazy, but I've been beating lots of nicer cars with the 944, even other pcars, and I'm ready to move into something more challenging (rear engine and actual HP) for local "fun events".

So does anyone autox their 996? I know it's more of a track car, but I was curious.
Duke student with no name:
you don't need PSM. PSM is for pussies. If you are just doing autocross and no track days, you don't need PSM. Personally, I feel that the 911 is too heavy for autocross, but you do whatever floats your boat. Motorcar investments is a reputable place, although his prices tend to be high on the older cars, that 996 you showed seems reasonable. I doubt that the car is dirty (it looked fine to me, but then I couldn't get the pictures to go bigger either).
I agree with you on the 2002+ model, and my personal preference is 2wd over AWD, but again, it's whatever floats your personal boat. We get so much snow around here afterall...
And Tim, I thought you were taking your car to Hendrick's? What happened to that?
Michael
(oh, and for anyone offended by my "PSM is for pussies" remark, I was just kidding, OK?
)
Yeah I figured it would be a bit weighty for autox - I would still be taking the 944 to serious events (like the SE Div in Atlanta in a couple of weeks...), but if I am going to get a 996 as a DD, then it is going to be autoxed sooner or later.
Here's a question- can you turn PSM off (and I mean OFF) like in BMWs or are you stuck with it? Because yes, for autox, I can't drive with that crap on. I would only want it for peace of mind on the streets.
The 996 is just not geared well for auto-xing. First gear is too low and second gear is too high. Add into the mix I have a tip trans and the result is a second gear bogger all over the course.
Never been on a track but the midrange pull mine has in second and third would leave me to believe the 996 was made for the track.

don't like the "I hit something on the 'hi way'" bit, but if it had a new engine put in it this year, is that a 3.4L or a 3.6L?
I would bet it is a 3.4L engine. There were a couple of threads within the last 6 months that discussed upgrading from a 3.4L to 3.6L engine. IIRC, there are too many additional changes required to convert to a 3.6L engine.
Oh - you have a lease? That's a different problem altogether. You do realize that when you sell the car, you will have to
buy
it from the leasing company, pay sales tax on it, get a new title, and then sell it to the buyer? I've done this twice, and I will never ever lease another car, it's just too difficult to get out of it (unless you trade it in).
Now, because we live in NC and everything is set up to screw the little guy and benefit the dealer, a dealer doesn't have to do this. So if you sell it to Hendrick (or any dealer) then you don't have to worry about the sales tax. It's all a scam, I know.
And it can get worse... my last car, was an Infiniti. When I called to find out the details on the payoff, they said that I had to take it to an Infiniti dealer to pay off the lease. They (the dealer) would then process the title change for me. Of course, to do all that, they were also going to charge me $400 "doc fee" (i.e. "bend over fee") so it was going to cost me sales tax plus $400 just to sell the damn car! Argh!
Bastards.
Sorry for the hijack.
Michael
I had totally forgotten to look where you are located, Tim. So used to everyone on the 944 forums being from the Midwest (944 cup racers) and CA. I am going through Charlotte tomorrow afternoon. You going to be around? You got any interest in an immaculate ride like this one? Original owner, REALLY pampered, hotchkis swaybars (I still have original bars too).
(Girlfriend not included, but I think your wife won't mind).
