Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

26 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So just recently my car has been experiencing a rough, grinding sort of feeling when I am accelerating around a turn or bend. It happens at speeds as slow as 35mph and upwards. Smooth as silk when going straight - Smooth when coasting around a turn - Rough when accelerating around a turn. Any thoughts? (BTW It may or may not be related, but I did the autocross last week...) and oh yes - my rear brake pads are getting thin but no brake pad warning light yet.

POST 2Original post

Ok, help us out a little... 1. It's a C4 right? 2. How many miles on the car? 3. Can you tell whether it is coming from the front or the rear? 4. Have you had any work done on any suspension components - wheel bearings, CV joints, differential? 5. Can you feel it in the steering wheel? 6. How much tread is left on your tires?

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

1. It's a C4 right? YES C4 TIP S 2. How many miles on the car? 50K MILES 3. Can you tell whether it is coming from the front or the rear? HARD TO TELL - IT FEELS/SOUNDS LIKE THE REAR - BUT I SORT OF FEEL LIKE I CAN FEEL IT IN THE STEERING... FEELS MORE PRONOUNCED WHEN MAKING RIGHT HANDERS 4. Have you had any work done on any suspension components - wheel bearings, CV joints, differential? NO NONE YET 5. Can you feel it in the steering wheel? SORT OF... 6. How much tread is left on your tires? TREAD IS OK - BUT RECENTLY DID AUTOX AND I CAN TELL TIRES ROLLED A LITTLE ALONG EDGES.

POST 4Original post

So, You say that the pads are thin....what about the rotors? Is it a rymthic noise or is it constant?

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Haven't checked the rotors but could thin pads or rotors create this problem? I haven't sen the brake light trip? Thanks

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well, it's diagnosed as auto transmission mounts that are shot.

POST 7Original post

Quotes source post: 8019856

Then ignore that diagnoses and check the front CV joints. The transmission mounts may be shot but is so that resulted from the drive line stress/windup cased by failed front CV joint(s).

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 8020040

BTW: after I came back from the dealer I just found this: https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...hand-turn.html It's the identical situation...

POST 9Original post

Quotes source post: 8020086

Maybe not... That was a C2, yours is a C4 with CV joints also in the front.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 8021456

Ok I will ask them to check it. While under there we found 3 things: 1. Transmission mounts shot 2. Drive shaft flex disc on it's way out 3. Right side headlight height adjuster broken ( Anyway she's an 8 year old car that's a daily driver driven through the winters....

POST 11Original post

I'm with wwest on this one. CV joints sound like #1 suspect.

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

well...just back from the dealer. the CV's are fine.... Are bad CV's always the failure mode for bad transmission mounts?

POST 14Original post

With front drive grinding or thumping while turning generally indicates a failing CV joint. Tighter turns and/or accelerating turns generally exacerbate the problem, more NOISE and you feel "tugging" on the stearing wheel in especially tight turns.

POST 15Original post

Ill bet the farm it was the headlight adjuster

POST 16Original post

Ever suspect the front differential? I'm not familiar with the C4 but I'm sure the setup is the same as an Audi Quattro but reversed. When was the last time the fluid was changed?

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I got my car back. The grinding is solved. They replaced the transmission mount bushings. Whilst there he showed me the drive shaft coupling was going to fail imminently so they replaced the drive shaft too. Total bill $1,760 including parts and labor. I was quoted $1,600 by a local indy but I really like my dealer and service team at Herb Chambers Porsche. I am finding increasingly close pricing between indy and dealer btw...

POST 18Original post

Glad your dealer fixed your problems, and it's nice to hear something positive about the Porsche dealer.

POST 19Original post

I'm with Gregg.........gotta be the right headlight...

POST 20Original post

I think when it comes to small, generally cheap parts (bushings, couplings, etc), going to the dealer vs. an indy makes little difference, since both charge $$ for labor. When you start replacing larger more expensive parts, the dealer charges more every time!

POST 21 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 8032829

Umm...I actually decided to not change the headlight level sensor...and noise is gone...

POST 22 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So here's the repair order. I am surprised that the transmission mount and drive shaft are both 997 parts...

POST 23Original post

Glad to hear you had a good experience with Herb Chambers. Did you bring the car to their Boston location or Burlington?

POST 24 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 8034362

Boston - they have different techs - one dedicated to air cooled and another dedicated to water cooled.

POST 25Original post

Roadsession, your post gives me hope. I have similar grinding on a RH turn - ( https://rennlist.com/forums/ showthread.php?t=986840&goto=newpost ) I will check my bushings. Can you tell me which part on the bill is the main item in question - so I can see what it looks like and where abouts it is.

POST 26Original post

Part Number 99737503303, looks like its the whole carrier assembly with the two bushings installed..
