Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

10 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So my car is in getting it's 4th RMS installed. The first one (installed at assembly of motor) failed at 16,974 miles and 3.5 years Second failed at 22,724 and 4.5 years Third failed at 35,600 and 6 years Could something else be causing this failure? I have read some where that if the crankshaft is out of round or not centric that it can cause this. However they appearantly have a go/ no go gauge for this and I assume it has been tested at the other installs? Suggestions?

POST 2Original post

my suggestion is don't assume. make sure they are testing it!! And is it the 997 seal they are using? Is it a P dealer? Mine has been bone dry for a year now.....

POST 3Original post

In Excellence magazine(9/07) they said that" in manual 996's that the heavy dual-mass flywheel and clutch are hung out on the end of a mostly unsupported crankshaft causing the the cradle assembly to move downward . Also , if the clutch and flywheel aren't balanced that this can make the problem worse.Tool # 9699/1 is a guage that was used to slide around the crankshaft and into case" and if it doesn't fit then the engine should be replaced. Best advice is to get the newest RMS design and be sure it's installed correctly.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The dealer is doing the work. They say the parts have been updated again and that the bulletin calls for updating the flywheel bolts as well. We'll see what they say once they get in there. Andy

POST 5Original post

Good Luck, this is a complete stress that is uncalled for!

POST 6Original post

Andy, I had my RMS done a month or so ago. First time for me but not sure if the previous owner had it done before me. I wouldn't be happy either if I had to replace it 3 times during my ownership.

POST 7Original post

I have replaced mine three times now ... and it has finally stopped leaking now (crossing my fingers as I say this).

Based on age and milage, you're letting the car stand for periods without much use. Seems to contribute to RMS issues.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

^^^ good point. If that's the case it will not leak again. The previous owner put about 5k a year on it, I'm putting about 10k.

Bump that up another 5k to 6k and you'll be good to go!
