So as I'm preparing for the transition from modified 911 to stock 996, I am wondering if the factory claimed top speeds are for real? My old 911 will pull redline+ in tope gear for hours on end, and is good for about 140 mph, maybe 145 mph (damned old school speedometers are kind sketchy).
What's the word? Has anyone here made 175 mph in a
stock
C2 ????
JimB has video of his car doing over 150 at Daytona. It looked like the car was still pulling hard before he hit the brakes.
I doubt Porsche would lie about the top speeds.
If you figure out the gear ratio and work the tire diameter into it then I am sure you are able to figure out what the exact top speed is. How long it will take to get to that speed is a different story. You need a lot of road in front of you.
140 mph, ran out of room. Had more to come. This was on stretch of interstate about 8 miles long, straight, and flat. It was around 4:00 am. , no traffic at all at that time. Felt safe enough to attenmpt, let off when I saw lights ahead of me.
I know mine isn't a 996 but after I broke in my 997S in Europe this summer I just happened to look down one time on the autobahn and noticed I was doing 285 kph,--and I had plenty more accelerator to go. If Porsche tells you a top speed for a model you can pretty much expect to be able to do that. Of course, traffic conditions and lane control in the USA are not like those in Europe, sadly...
There's a two lane country road that is North of I-80 and parallels it for miles in Kansas. After picking up my '99 Cab in Houston and driving it home we took this road to avoid the boring Interstate. After traveling at 125 MPH for awhile and getting my wife somewhat comfortable at that speed I eased on the accelerator and watched the speed climb easily to 155 MPH, I wanted to keep going but my passenger started protesting which is usually the case. Hopefully I'll top it out sometime.
Sounds like the 160-165 mph club meetings are regularly attended. I kinda figured 175 mph on public roads would be rare. Even I might consider that kind of....dare I say it...dangerous
Keep it safe...
153 fastest I ever went late night drive from Allstate arena out to Elgin on the 90. It had a lot more power but late at night who knows who's out there. 174 is very possible.
I hit 160, but in an 89 turbo, not 996 - and it was still climbing pretty fast. Like Jugger, let off when I saw lights ahead. It was a weird feeling going by a car at 100 mph over their speed.
This was after coming through the border crossing on the NB 5 from San Diego and they were looking HARD for something or someone - letting through about 5 cars per minute. I have never seen the freeway that open before or since.
The car will run out of revs before it tops out on speed. I have been up to about 170mph and was close to the rev limiter (2000 996 C4 Cab). Autobahn 7 Sunday morning, all legal! I am a pilot by trade so somewhat slower than Mach 1+ but probably more dangerous since you can not climb or descend to avoid traffic, however no one shooting at you but that is another story for another day.

Yeah you see, that's what I'm talking about. Running out of revs in top gear....that would be running out of top speed too, unless you're saying that the chassis and aerodynamics can handle more and it's the rev limiter alone that's topping you out.
On another note.....In the old days there was a difference between North American cars and European Porsches (gearing, compression ratio, catalysts...etc) is this still true of the 996 series???
Hit 149 in my 97 Boxster 2.5L...it was still pulling....Hit 160 in my 996 C4...still pulling....i would say that Porsche's numbers are "conservative" considering the top speed of the Boxster is listed at 151 and I am POSITIVE it would have beat that.....
That won't work. You're neglecting air friction / viscosity in that equation - at high speeds that dominates the amount of power you need to go ahead.
On another note, did 172 mph (!!) on my bike once but "just" 110 mph in the car. The bike thing was done on an open deserted road (~8 miles stretch) and we scanned the road for debris etc before going all out. It's a "once in a life" thing that I don't plan on getting even close to anymore.
I now never go above 95 mph in the car and 80 mph on the bike. Somehow now going very fast doesn't appeal to me as much as driving technical or just enjoying the ride.
Was about to state the same regarding wind resistance. I lose 8mph on my 928 S4 with the lights up. Still, I've had it over 160 (gps confirmed). The 996 has yet to see more than 140 as well as the 986. I don't enjoy the 9X6 as much at speed as the 928s yet the 9X6 cars are so much more fun in the twisties. I guess each has it's own forte and you have to choose the right tool for the job.
There used to be a big difference in power outputs between US and RoW, but improving emissions technology (more efficient cats, etc) mean that most models by most manufacturers are have the same output on either side of the ocean. I'm inclined to believe Porsche's top speed claims, whereas a certain Italian manufacturer has always been know for - shall we say - "optimism".
250 Km/h...but it was just to get rid of some pesky ricer that was following too close on the hwy. It was pretty smooth at speed...too bad for speed limits.
180 according to the speedo and it was still pulling like a locomotive...of course that was in the GT3. Backed off because the scenery was going by a little faster than I was comfortable with at the time.
I have only topped out 5th.....speedo showed 152mph, but it was really only
144 according to the GPS....deserted country road with no cross roads that I know like the back of my hand.
My GPS data aquisition system recorded 161 at Daytona before braking for turn 1 on the 24 hr course. The speedo read way over 170 and I have tall rears so don't believe what your speedometers are telling you. They are way optimistic.
Your 996s will be limited by aero drag in 6th, not rpms as someone said.
And stop driving at triple digit speeds on public highways! My family uses those roads. Go find a track to play on. It's much more fun anyway.
Jim
BTW, to put to rest any question of whether your speed is limited by aero drag or the rev limiter, with 285/30/18s (25 in dia.) at 7200 rpms in 6th you would be traveling at 185.2 mph. Not likely.
For fun drive your cars at 4000 rpms in 6th and see what your speedos read. It could be interesting to see how accurate they are. When you report your speed, also report what tires you have on back. Size and brand or just diameter if you know it.
Not a P-car story, but letting loose in the Viper GTS I owned for a while was definitely a bit of an adventure. I had only owned the car for about a month when I finally took it out in the middle of nowhere just to open it up a bit. It just pulled and pulled and pulled until I was doing somewhere in between 140 and 145...in 4th gear. At that point, I suddenly realized that, with all that power, I had never actually shifted the car into 5th before. Even though it all felt rock-solid, I wasn't looking to break any new ground at that speed, so I let off.
Amazing car. Never really felt all that safe in it, but simply an amazing car. Still, it's a little refreshing to be in a car that's a lot smarter than I am instead of being in one that has a lot more nerve than I have (or should have, for that matter).
I ran out of gears in my 1981 911 many years ago. Indicated 162 mph and I was running on 8x16 inch Yokohama A008s in 225/50-16 wheels. 162 was at 7200 rpms. it was a pretty honest 162 as my GPS backed it up. it was a modified SC, with a 6 lb boost Rayjay turbo, producing 270 hp. Not the cleanest car in the .cd department, but it got up there very fast. The 997 is blindingly fast and does it without a turbo. Amazing stuff; made that turbo feel slow when passing 180...
I had my C4S up to about 155 on the way home from buying it a few weeks ago. If I had a little more seat time in the car, I would have tried for 170+. Thank god for the Valentine 1!
184MPH on Speedo and 178MPH on GPS. Tried to attach pictures, but got an error message saying the file size was too large so I will try reducing the resolution and give it a shot later.
136 on I-5 early in morning. Wife started figiting and cars were ahead so had to slow down. It had no hesitation in going faster that was for sure. I believe my top speed is stated at 186.
I hit 142 last night leaving a super bowl party when my girl (who was intoxicated) told me she felt like she had to puke. Not in my p car. Got to the bathroom just in a nick of time.

6th gear at 4000 RPM
105 MPH
Tires: Michelin Pilot Sport
Front 205/50/17
Rear 255/40/17
I will be putting on new wheels and tires this week. The new tires are Continental Contisports Contract 2 and the rear are 265/40/18. The overall diameter goes from 25.03 in to 26.34 in. Will this change my speedometer reading? Is there any way to dial in the correct speed on the speedometer?
Well, I stand corrected.....6th gear @ 4000 rpm = 106mph indicated.
I can only presume this is closer to 100mph actual as I did not have my
GPS on this am.
- Cam
Got 162.3 on the radar gun, versus an indicated 167-168 on the dash. There wasn't a whole lot of power left above 160, but there was a headwind and ~5000 feet of altitude.
with the 996 I did 145..very easy....when I lived n Europe and worked in Germany (best country in the world....because of the no speedlimits on a lot of their highways!!) I drove Amsterdam-Hamburg a couple of times a month for a few months........and I had a 928S....278KM/hr don't know how this is in MHP....but it is darn fast! and you can concentrate on the road ahead instead of looking out for cops...and that makes the experience a lot nicer.
Does the GT3 have a higher redline than a C2 996?
What about gearing differences?
I don't know what redline speed in 2nd is, but 3rd at redline is around 105mph indicated.
8,200 RPM...great for blowing by cars on the freeway in 2nd gear as you're still on the entrance ramp.
On one of my last trips recently to T-hill, some idiot in an Acura coupe with tinted windows and chromed wheels decided to tailgate me at 6am on an empty road in the middle of nowhere (505). I slowed down, he still sat on my bumper. So, I decided on a guaranteed way to lose him. Put the hammer down and watched him quickly disappear in my rearview mirror. Uh oh...traffic up ahead. Ah, it's only a couple of trucks with trailers in the right lane headed to the track. They should be attentive drivers, no reason to lift. Wow did I go by them fast...quickly glanced down at the speedo...190!!! (I chatted with a friend of one of them later that day at the track, that's another long story...)
