It has been scraped twice (ladder once, camp trunk the other time) in my garage by my children horsing around, but it was consmetic damage repaired both times for under $500.

Did you not know that the world is secretly run by women and it all has to do with the "pair" and the apparatus it is attached to.

And....no one, man or woman, young or old, would get away with setting me up to be chastised via cell phone.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I am responsible for picking my son up after football (freshman). My wife got me into a car pool with two other kids. One of them is raised by his grandmother (probably about 70) because the mother was too young (I hear 15) when the child was born.
I will admit that I do not really like the carpool because for some reason the boys do not take a shower after practice and then they climb in my car and there is grass everywhere after I am drop them off.
All that aside, first day of carpool, I meet the grandmother at the designated drop off point, and she makes a snide remark about my car. Basically she asks if it is a porsche, then shakes her heads and laughs at me and mutters with in ear shot why do people drive cars like that. I ignore it.
Next incident, the football coach decided to let out practice an hour early. My wife calls me. I am playing golf with a client. I abandon the next three holes, and hastely make my way to pick up the kids. The grandmother calls me when I am about 10 minutes out from picking them up. I am about 20 minutes late, at that point. She asks me my eta, I tell her, she then asks me to have her grandson call me when I pick him up. I do. He then hands me the phone and she starts yelling at me that I am late, and if I continue to be late, then she will disolve the carpool. I tell her it is disolved. She calls me back another 5 or so times, I ignore the call. I get to the drop off point, she appologizes (manic-bi-polar).
I tell my wife, and she orders me to stay in the carpool, football is over in mid october. When I travel, my wife does not want to be stuck picking up my son everyday. The old lady calls my wife and profusely appologizes and says it was a misunderstanding. (I guess she does not want to pick up her grandson everyday).
Last night, the other lady (we get along with her and her husband) in the carpool calls my wife and says the grandmother does not want me to pick up her son in the porsche. She says it is not a safe car. My wife tells the lady that actually a porsche is one of the safest cars in the world. The old lady wants me to trade out cars with my wife on my days to pick up. My wife says no way, she does not want to drive my car to work since she is a teacher and can not safely park it at her school. It is a private school but not in the best part of town Then the old lady calls my wife directly and asks her why can't I just buy an SUV. (Ironically I am about to buy a suburban for my new job but keep the porsche. I had a land rover, but sold it last spring because it was breaking all the time and out of warranty.)
My son then chimes in and says that I should pull up in the suburban one day, and then the porsche the next to mess with her mind.
I have a 40th 996. Yes they are big boys, but they do fit in the back (at least for a short time).
The old lady drives a 1993 honda accord that does not look to be in the best shape.
Not only does my car stop a hell of a lot better than her car, handle better, and is able to accelerate out of dangerous situations, it also has a lot more safety features, such as air bags, advanced crumple zones, and steel supports around the passenger cabin.
My car is pristine. I just serviced and purchased new tires (30k). I also drive very slow when the boys are in the car.
The old lady's husband works in the Virgin Islands, and she and her grandson live alone. I now know why. I also wonder what happened to the mom since by now she would be 29-30. More than old enough to take care of a child.
What is it with old people??? I am 39, and already looking forward to my retirement. When I get to that age, the last thing I would want to do is start a confrontation on such trivial issues. Is she really concerned, or just prejudice against people who drive porsches?
porch |pr ch | noun
a covered shelter projecting in front of the entrance of a building. a veranda.
Do you drive a mobile home, or "manufactured housing" if you will?
This is a forum about
Porsches!
Ask her to watch the video of the 997 crushed for art. Watch how the last thing crushed is the front end and the cab itself. That is pretty impressive.
The old bitty is to be ignored. I would have dissolved the carpool as well.
This story also reminds me why I am (happily) no longer married. The last time my wife 'ordered' me to do anything I told her to go fornicate privately.
Is that in the manual? JK
Did you not know that the world is secretly run by women and it all has to do with the "pair" and the apparatus it is attached to.
Not all '93 Accords have Passenger front airbags and none of them had side impact airbags.
Next time you speak to her, politely tell her that you are not entirely comfortable having your son ride around in a 14 year old car with outdated safety equipment. Ask her if she could possible purchase a newer car or rent a newer car on carpool days (for the safety of the children of course). If that is not an option find out when her brakes were last serviced? See if she is willing to have the car checked out by a certified mechanic who will certify that it is safe and roadworthy.
She should get the point.
Damn Freddie,
You must be a good guy putting up with all of that crap. I would have dissolved the stupid carpool already, wife be damned. Nothing that trivial is worth that much confrontation. Get the kid a cell phone and some cash for a cab if wife or yourself can't pick up the kid up once in awhile.
Tell the old lady to... well tell her nothing and be the better person. Just making her pick up her grandkid when she doesn't want to will be punishment enough, and maybe one of the miles will be the last on her old beater...
+1!
Also, ask her to get a complete physical exam including testing her reflexes and vision. Additionally, you'll need to see a DMV printout showing that she hasn't been involved in numerous accidents over the past few years.
You can't skimp when it comes to safety.
This reminds me of an incident that happened to me. An old lady came up to me while getting fuel one day. She said in a bitchy way: "it is a beautiful car but can I be conscious of other people around me the next time i get fuel because I am blocking the pump behind me?"
I told her that I whole heartly agree and made a huge mistake buying a car with the gas tank and engine in the wrong place. I think she finally figured out why she had no room to fuel up behind me after that and walked away.
Football is over next week. I will teach my son how to ride the bus from his school to my wife's or my office. I have also told my kids that if they ever need to get out of a situation or are stuck call 2222222, the local yellow cab number. I will happily pay the driver when he gets to my office or home. He has a cell phone, when it is not taken away, and he has money (when he doesn't blow it on video games.)
At least the other mother is nice, and she is hot too.
The older you get you either get more mellow or more bitchy. Funny how that works.
I have a high stress job, so I just laugh it off. It is amusing, if anything.
I do feel bad for her grandson because he is a nice and sharp kid. He also seems embarrassed by his grandma. I bet he can't wait four more years to get the hell out of his home.
I need to reply to the kids and porsche thread because I am carpooling 3 large boys. My son is about 6'2" and 170, his friend is the same. The grandkid is about 5'9" and 150 (he sits behind me.) I am 6'1" and 220. We all do fit, and their stuff fits upfront. It consists of their books and football pants and jersey (needs to be washed before games).
The kids love the car and ask me countless questions.
You have been too accomodating...sometimes old ppl drive me crazy. They have nowhere to be, but there always in a rush. I don't get it...maybe their anxious to get home to watch Matlock or something.
The old lady should pick the kids up everyday--what is a 70 yr old doing all day anyway? She obviously is around everytime you drop the kids off. I'd throw some money at her and have her get the kids all the time. But she may have a jam-packed schedule of Judge Judy and microwave dinners.
Man, they ain't makin' Texans like they use to........ What?, did you guys all go metrosexual down there?
Yep, growing a pair is on page 68 in the manuel.....
You're both out of your f%^&*$g trees. The old lady for having senity creep in and you for putting up with the carpool.
Tell your wife (after you've grown a nice average sized pair of stones) that you're responsible for your kids alone and no others. If she wants to be in the carpool, then she is welcome to be, but you'll not take guff from anyone, especially an old cow like that woman, so she can shove the carpool where the sun don't shine.
Honestly, I sometimes wonder what hiccup happened in evolution to cause people to lose their backbones.
Yeah, I know. There are some times that I can't hold comments like that in because it appears that common sense failed. My diplomacy chip sometimes needs a reboot.
Forget political correctness, she was being rude and I see no sense in being accomodating to someone who was rude for no reason. The carpool in this case is an inconvenience on top of the grief of having to deal with someone like her. I wouldn't put up with it. His wife got him into a situation that he doesn't like - time to get himself out.
Wow - not that I'm a tough guy, but..... my wife wouldn't dream of "ordering" me to do anything, nor would I "order" her. And....no one, man or woman, young or old, would get away with setting me up to be chastised via cell phone. I would be tempted to consider a permanent solution to a temporary problem.
Now people do have some pretty unexpected reactions to me owning a Porsche..I get anything from a neighbor asking me why I would ever drive such an impractical and expensive car, why heck, you can't fit but two people in that thing! I said nothing as he hiked himself up and into his extended Trail Blazer that he only ever rides in alone. Or the kid asking me to race his GTI because it has just as much horsepower, and he was dead serious. And fortunately, those who say "you earned it, enjoy it". The old saying of it takes all kinds to make the world go around still applies. But I never heard a saying that we should eat s***, complain about it, and then go back for seconds.
I guess you wont be married too long. You need share in the pain of raising children and not dump all the work on the wife (when and if you are or get married). It is not fair.
Also, my wife is picking up my other children. Unfortunately they are the only 2 in our area to carpool with. The old lady, but at least the other one is a hot mom.
I have a new job that started this week. So the order is more of a plea from my wife. Since my new job will have me out of town tuesday through thursday for the next month, so no more carpool for me. Football is also over next thursday. She was asking me to hold out last week (I did, although I did not want to), so that you would not be stuck this week and next week with no ride for the boy.
I assume that most of the ***** comments and the like are from young men that have no idea what it is like to raise children in this day and age. My other daughters also have a myraid of activities which requires my wife and I to spend most of our free time peforming a taxi service.
Myself, when I was young and in the car pooling age, my parents had the advantage of a driver, no car pool was necessary. I unfortunately have not accumulated enough wealth to afford that luxury, nor does it look like I will accumulate that much wealth while my kids are in the need of a ride. Next August my son will be driving age so he will be self sufficient and be able to help with his sisters. Although my porsche is nervous.
PC may play a part, but I was raised to be polite and reserved. Think before you speak, etc.... I do get to be very assertive in my profession. So when I get off of work, I want peace and quiet. Which means not bitching out the old lady and childlishly backing out of the carpool to leave my wife with a mess to pick up. She did do me a favor by initially arranging it because I was having to leave work at 5:30, which is about 1.5 hours earlier than normal. So the carpool has also increased my bottom line by allowing me not to have to leave work for three months early 4 days a week. Serious revenue could be loss. Forty or so hours at my rate would pay for a lot of porsche payments.
I am not a *****, I am pragmatic, and the past few posts are simply childish.
For me, I was married for far too long. Raising children in this day and age is quite challenging (I know, I have two).
Now that my ex-wife has become older and more mature she understands why 'ordering' anyone in a marriage to do anything is a recipe for dissent and discontent. And with children there must be unity and consistency.
Personally.. I would not accepted request. I once was that accommodating young 'nice' boy. All it netted me in the end was a royal rogering of the most violating kind.
Deal with it as you like. I'd tell the old lady to go **** off (but not in front of my children -- it seems that some degree of cowing is very difficult to de-program).
awww. man dont get your feelings hurt... just funning.. SERIOUSLY.. no foul intended OK ?
I am nearly 48.. been married for 22 years...same wife.. and a nice harem... thank you very much
2 son's one is a sr. in college and a sr. in HS. I am on my 9th or 10th 911. Taken my 911's from camping to church and autocross in-between. You need to let the old baggie know you have a set of cajones... Since you are making the dough get a ptime car. (I've had a few in addition to the 911's, SUV's and pickuptrucks) Make the $$ sacrifice for your family, for that my friend.. is the most important thing in the world.
its ok to to tell the meddlesome baggie to bugger off...
My new company is going to buy me a car. My choices are Denali, Suburban LTZ, Ford Expidtion xl(?) etc... I may be able to go with a Toyota but I probably should stay American because it is a construction company and some of the clients may be overly biased to american cars (Texas). I saw the suburban at the State Fair of Texas, very impressed. Denali I rode in the other day, very nice, but do not know what the difference is between Suburban ltz and denali. Which one would you all choose out of this class of vehicles?
Porsche will resume status as a toy (it has been by DD since the spring), although they have picked up the payments and insurance, until I get the SUV in a few months.
I financed my porsche through Porsche Fn Svcs. It is not a lease, but a loan where I can turn in the car (Sept 2009) or pay them $31k. I would need to get an extended warranty since mine will be up next September, but I am considering keeping the car. I am under the impression that my car will be worth far north of $31k in two years. I have a 40th, and currently they seem to be selling in the mid 50's. Will it drop over 20k in two years? At the rate I am going, it will probably have somwhere around 55k to 60k miles by then. Dilema is to keep and pay off cash, or get a 997 targa with the x51 package with full leather, and Sport Exhaust.
I love my car and would be content to drive it forever. But the targa is very appealing because the hatch opens, it lets a lot of light in, and the quasi convertabile status without the pains of a real convertible. In fact, unless it is too hot (usually lunch time in the summer) or a road trip, I usually drive with the windows down and the sunroof open, so I can hear the engine better.
I have maintained my car to the tee. I only hand wash it, maintenance on time, rear tires every 15k, front at 30k. I have the 3M, but any chip or ding, I immediately repair. It has been scraped twice (ladder once, camp trunk the other time) in my garage by my children horsing around, but it was consmetic damage repaired both times for under $500. It is like new. I would love to keep this car for 40 years. In fact, my youngest daughter (8) tells everyone that it will be her car when she can drive. Dont have the hear to tell her no yet.
Porches are timeless. Yesterday while driving into San Antonio, on 1604, between I-10 and I-35, there was a silver 550 (may have been a replica). Regardless, still looks good after all of these years. The driver was in his late 60's to early 70's. He waved as I passed him, and I thought it would be cool to still have this car when I am that old (I am 39, M, kids 15, 14, and 8).
Question to the forum, what large SUV is better, and will my current porsche hold its value above $31k over the next two years and 20 to 30k miles?
The Denali, definitely, though it will be very similar to the Suburban. I'll assume that the Denali is the "short" (non-XL) version, so it won't be quite as unwieldly to drive as the Suburban and you have the benefit of the higher-trim-level interior.
I'm sure your 40th will be worth more than $31k. 1st of all, it's a special edition (1969 or whatever, of them made). Secondly, 2002 C2s are definitely above $30k at this point, so extrapolating 2 years forward, you should be ahead.
I'd say that amongst the 996's the 40th may be one of the more collectible ones down the road. It would be sweet to drive one of those things in 2037! A new 997 is awfully tempting, though. If you love your 996, just keep it (and save the $100k).
I think she is right! She has been on this planet and is older than all of us rennlisters combined....we should all buy a safe, slow preferably American car....like an oldsmobile and drive 35mph on the countries national highway....start backing into other cars while parking and bitch at everybody passing us....always being in a hurry (because we have only so many days left).....okay I can't come up with anything else what stupid old people do while driving (or something like it)
or maybe tdub is right and she wants you......because you are sexy,,,,,you are driving a sexy sportscar!
