Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just wanted to see if anyone has experienced the same problem. After driving in traffic for 20-30 minutes as I come to stop in traffic my oil pressure level drops to zero and then the oil pressure warning light comes on, this is then followed by a strange "whinning" noise which stops after I press the gas. Car is a 996 1999. Thanks JC

POST 2Original post

I don't know exactly what the problem is but I would not drive the car until the problem was fixed. If your oil pressure gauge is correct and the oil pressure is indeed falling to zero you will do serious engine damage by driving it. Have a dealer look at it ASAP!!!

POST 3Original post

If Oil pressure light comes on, I would shut 'er down. As far as pressure range, does anyone know the exact minimum (or expected) pressure reading at idle on a warmed-up 996? and/or what is the oil pressure of a fresh or new 996 engine at 1000 rpm, 2000rpm, 3000 etc... Thanks in advance.

POST 4Original post

I have not seen this problem but as others have suggested, park it! I know its hard to do, but unless you have alot of cash saved up and are willing to blow it, park it!

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It's in the dealer right now...I believe the response from the service desk was don't buy a lottery ticket this week...implying the outlook was not good....

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quick update - speaking to the dealer looks like having to remove engine to remove and inspect oil pump. Not cheap.

POST 7Original post

ouch....I would at least invest 5 bucks in the lottery.....Hey..."ya never know". Good luck. J

POST 8Original post

Mine reads 1.5 bar at idle when hot and quite a bit higher at idle when cold.
