I installed the switch on the left side of my horseshoe so the switch "bump" and (closed garage door icon) are on the left, and the open garage door icon on the right.

My version still used the regular garage door opener remote.

I did this so I could easily change the battery in the opener and, when I sold the car, I could very easily and quickly revrieve the garage door opener (4th pic).
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

After seeing many posts about doing your own "homelink" I have decided to do my own.
I have had really bad experience buying stuff from ebay so I will go to the dealership to buy one of the buttons that have the "garage door" opener on them.
Does anyone know the part # for one of those? My car is a 99 C4 996 so obviously I am looking for one that looks the same as this....
http://images.google.com/imgres?imgu...%3Den%26sa%3DN
(click on the garage door install and it is the 8th photo in that album) - note it is basically like a "window up/down" switch but with a garage door icon on it....
If someone can provide the part # and the cost, that would be great...thank you in advance (the local Porsche dealership has some "not so very bright" people working there...if I go there trying to explain what I need, they will try to sell me a wheel or a window trim piece...). I rather go there with a part #...thanks!
The Targe Roof Shade switch part number is 996-613-119-10-A05. Here is a pic of the switch. Here are a couple of tips for wiring the Door Opener (Targa) switch.
Illumination Wiring
- On the Windshield Wiper Rheostat switch (or another illuminated switch), look for a blue wire that has red hash marks on it (not a red stripe up the wires side). That is a positive (+) line for the icon lighting. Then find a brown wire (ground wire) on the switch, which is the negative (-) wire. Those are your 2 leads to tap into.
Illuminating the Switch
- The 2 outside vertical spades are the correct ones to use for switch illumination and they will work either in parking or headlight mode. The pic below actually shows the Shade switch up side down, and it looks like open/closed garage doors. I installed the switch on the left side of my horseshoe so the switch "bump" and (closed garage door icon) are on the left, and the open garage door icon on the right.
All you have to remember is that the positive (+) lead is on the closed garage door side of the switch (the side with the bump) and the negative (-) lead is on the open garage door side of the switch (the flat side).
I kept my garage door opener cover on and then clipped it to the INSIDE of the carpeted panel near the gas pedal (3rd pic). I did this so I could easily change the battery in the opener and, when I sold the car, I could very easily and quickly revrieve the garage door opener (4th pic).
Hope this helps.
Michael - no, it is not quite the same. The Homelink mod that
td873
posted gets it's power from the car battery, which is why he installed an in-line fuse.
My version still used the regular garage door opener remote. The 1st pic shows the circuit board of my garage door opener, which has 3 buttons on it (blue). I used the center button. Simply solder two wires to the BACK (opposit side of the button) of the circuit board (2nd pic).
NOTE:
The best way to find out where to solder is to take a paperclip, bend it U-shaped and touch the two connecters that will open your door. Once you find the two connecters that is where you solder the wires. It's usually behind the button on the opener.
The 3rd pic shows the circuit board fitted into the case with the wires exiting the case. The 4th pic shows the case completely closed and the wire ends ready to be connected to the wires leading to the Targa Shade switch (see the last pic in post #2 above).
Hope this helps.
Nice pedals, Tim! Did you get the 10HP or the 25HP version?
Oh, there is a nice write up on wiring things into the horseshoe related to the spoiler switch mod. Some good pics there as well. But my search button is broken

I got the 25 HP version, which are the pedals without the rubber nipples. The rubber nipples 1) add weight and 2) increase the coeffocient of drag, which is why they only get you an additional 10 HP.
I also did the Spoiler switch too. Maybe I can "find" something on that too!
A break in the action at work gave me a minute to fix my search button
I found this over at Renntech:
DIY Spoiler Switch Mod
For those that aren't members over there, it's worth every penny - especially when you need TSB 6420:"Noises in the Wind Shield and Rear Window Area"
(This is the DIY I used to put my spoiler switch in - I'm sure many folks used this one)

Hey TD, speaking of mods and switches, did you ever see my Sidewinder switches and my Nuke switches. They are part of the "Ultra Exclusive " options offered by Porsche.
The 1st pic shows the Sidewinder switches (one on each side of the horseshoe) which will launch mini-sidewinder missiles. The mini-sidewinder missiles are stored under the small covers for the roof rack system. Pretty stealthy, huh? These can be fired forward or backward to either clear a path in heavy traffic or to convince a tailgater to "back off" permanently.
The 2nd pic shows the Nuke switch. Since it is a little more “broad based” in it’s effectiveness, there is a safety net built into this one, which why this switch has an indicator light on it. When the light is Green (shown) the Nuke is unarmed and safe. Push the switch once and the light changes to Yellow, indicating that the Nuke is armed and ready to launch. A second push of the button changes the indicator light to Red indicting that launch is imminent. The button must be pushed once more time while the light is Red to launch the Nuke. If the is not pushed within 10 seconds again after the indicator light turns Red, the system will disarm the Nuke and the indicator light will be Green again.
And you thought the British and James Bond only had the cool gadgets!
OK Tim, you have to tell us, how do you get your switches to switch functions. The missile install and the nuke activation is elementary. But I cant figure out how to get one button to run the missile and the nuke!
That can't be done! PERIOD! The US DOT made Porsche "over engineer" both of those switches so they can't be made to serve dual purposes.
The only other thing in our cars that is MORE "over engineered" (a.k.a Uber Engineered) is the seat belt chime! No one has been able to defeat that, have they?
I rest my case!
well...screw this idea. Called the local Porsche Dealership (Aristocrat is the ONLY one in the area) and they want $ 69.00 for the damn switch... I guess I am going to have to search online and see if I can source it some other way...
Or call Sunset Imports in Oregon, a Porsche Dealership. They sell Porsche parts at cost + 15%. You are too close to stop now!
and one more thing.... when you finish the mod.... POST SOME @#$%^&* PICS!
Thanks for the help guys...I got the wire ran and tested the garage door opener...I just need a damn switch right now...the girlfriend saw what I was trying to do so now she wants the same darn thing on her Z4...darn it!! Copycat!
I will see what I come up with but as mentioned, yes, it is too late to stop now!!!
