I used the repairset, before I changed my center console....the repair set is pretty straigth forward but it requires a tool because it doesn't come with screws, but with (I forgot the name)...I used screws and it worked like new!
Outcome qualification: Negation, uncertainty or missing explicit repair resolution overrides the raw extraction signal.

I installed the little metal U-brackets with curved-tip needle-nosed pliers.

I did not rivet but instead used the advice of others on this forum and drilled 2 holes and used 3/4x10 sheetmeatal screws(2) to secure the hinge.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

One of the 2 plastic hinges on the door of my center console has broken, making the door not close w/o me moving the armrest part around.
Anyone have this and know of a repair?
Has anyone found a good aftermarket console? I feel sure I've seen a thread on this but can't find it now that I need it
I have not had to replace the hinges, so I can't help with the cost of the replacement hinges. I remember seeing the thread on Renntech. When I saw that about a year ago, I have been very careful when opening the center console lid. You might want to call Hendrick Parts dept. to get a price quote.

Thx. Eric.
Nicolaasbd: Can you tell me more about the console replacement? I thought I remember a DYI and pics on the replacement console.
Eric, is that something you offer? didn't see one in Preformance catalog.
If you get a pop rivet gun (thanks Dell) it is really a very simple diy. But I can't recall exactly how I did it....I used screws and the pop thingies are going to make the repair even more professional.... I think the repair kit comes with instructions.
Pat, are you asking about replacing the entire rear center console or just the lid for the storage bin? If the entire console, thatn that is rather easy. Will take about an hour. When I onstalled my B&M short shifter, I had to remove/reinstall the consile. It is really a piece of cake, especially with the instructions from B&M.
Eric does have painted rear center consoles, and they look great. Take a trip up to his office to see a sample of his work. First rate stuff!
FYI....you need to remove the entire rear center console to replace the hinge. It's impossible to do in a CAB. Their might be a little space to work with in a coupe' but I can't speak for that. Regardless, to do it properly you need to remove it.
Here is the DIY for the replacement.
That doesn't help anybody without an explanation.
I'd be curious to know how you got the brackets into the rear opening and kept them square to rivet since the rear center console sits flush against the rear tunnel.
Well... I first placed a fresh painter's canvas drop cloth across the back seats and tunnel and pulled it down into the seam between the console and the tunnel (so as protect the material and catch drilling swarf). I then removed the cover per the TSB and carefully sawed the remnants of the plastic hinge with a dozuki. I installed the little metal U-brackets with curved-tip needle-nosed pliers. This was aided by first sliding a metal putty knife down into the seam between the console and the tunnel so as to depress the carpeting on the tunnel. This created ample space to slide the brackets in. I then doubled over a plastic zip tie and temporarily slide that into the recess of the U-bracket. This served to press and hold the bracket in position while I drilled the hole for the pop rivet. Pulled the zip tie back out and the rest is per the TSB.
Damn! That's more work than doing it the proper way. I bet the farm that removing the console, installing the hinge, and reinstall of the console is faster (and less frustrating) than your way.

Ordered today from Hendrick. They're mailing to my door in RH for delivery tomorrow, all fo $30. Can't be that for an hour of sweating
Eric, thx for the name and number.
Seriously doubt it. I'm certain I was done and cleaned up before your console was even out of the car. If it's the 'proper way' why doesn't the TSB call for it?
So how many acres on your little farm I'm getting?
My farm is less than an acre so not much
Removal of the center console takes LESS than 5 minutes. So you are saying that your "prep" and "clean up" were both sub-5 minutes?
Got er done!
Completed my console hinge replacement this weekend. Took over an hour, but that's because I kept having to run back into the house to cheer Tennessee as they beat Georgia!
Anyway thanks for all the input. the DYI and pics made this an relatively simple job. I figured it added about 10 hp too
Pat
I had to remove the console, but it was pretty straight forward. Going slow not to add any more scratches, took a hour +
I found that it already had a replacement metal hinge but the rivet was popped out. I used the new clips but some sheet metal screws that went in nice and tight. Its a pleasure to have a smooth lid again !
If I win your farm...are you going to move?? Because if not you can keep the farm and all bets are off...I can't imagine living there with your annoying
, commanding
, professor
, telling everybody what to do YOU.
I bet you can't be like that to your wife!!
I am refering to this
You got all of that from my post? Who pissed in your Cheerios this morning??? Perfect example of why I stand behind my statement earlier this year how the 996 board has gone to **** at times.
I sure hope that was a momentary lapse of judgment on your part b/c up until that post you just made, I thought we were cool. Guess not.
Back to my other subforums.
damn dell.....I was only kidding...and no not from just one post....followed your remarks for about 2 years now.....and by your respondse...someone pissed in yours..I had a muffin!
To be honest, I thought you were serious, because you used a lot of angry/confrontational smilies. That's just my take on it, even though the comments were not directed at me.
Huh? So you were joking? As Tim said as well, it sure didn't come across that way. You need to work on your comedy a bit more.
If you truly were in fact joking, then no harm no foul. We'll chalk that up to taking a stab at comedy
However, I am confused by your comment "I've been following your post for 2 years". So were you trying to emulate me? If so, I am flattered!
.......and now back to our regularly scheduled programming
Michael
No, I didn't get pics. I used the DYI from Renntech and was careful to watch as I took stuff apart:
1) I didn't need a saw to remove the old hinge. I hit it about 10 licks with a file and the old hinge was gone and level.
2) Make sure to align the hinge front to back and side to side (you'll understand when you get inside the console).
3) I wish they had sent a spare hinge spring, because it still doesn't pop open. It just slowly opens 1/2 way.
4) Someone mentioned having to repair the new hinge replacing the rivots supplied with sheet metal screws...not a bad idea!
Let me know how it goes?!
Never wanting a good debate to go on w/o sticking my foot, er uh, I mean 2 cents in...
I do think this job could be done just taking the back on the console out. If I had done this job before or have to do it again, I'm not so sure it wouldn't be easier or at least quicker. But I think doing it the way described in the DYI is more idiot proof...I'll now leave room for comments
I just did this hinge replacement 20 minutes ago,and did not remove the center console. Lift the console cover(lid) and remove 8 torx screws(T10) and take off the upper cover. Remove 2 phillips screws and the L shaped strap bracket. Remove the hinge pin and take out the spring, noting correct orientation. I used a sharp razor knife to remove any plastic from the old hinge, insert the 2 U shaped brackets( mine slid in with my fingers) and use the new metal hinge to locate and drill through the U brackets. I did not rivet but instead used the advice of others on this forum and drilled 2 holes and used 3/4x10 sheetmeatal screws(2) to secure the hinge. Reattatch the strap, insert the hinge pin and reattatch the the upper and lower cover with the 8 T10 torx screws.Total time was a little over an hour, mixed in with a couple of cold ones. Console cover is now strong, quiet and better than new. Thanks to the info I gathered on this forum.
