Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

15 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

is it ok for the car to be on jack stands for extended periods of time (hours)? I have them on 2 jack stands on the rear mounting points and the hydraulic jack on the point under the engine and behind the oil sump pan. Is this ok to do?

POST 2Original post

is it a 3.4 or 3.6.... I heard the 3.4, the wheels may fall off, but the 3.6 has been updated to the 997 wheel carriers.

POST 5Original post

no.....you wheels will not fall off....can't believe you are falling for that...LOL....but I can't chime in on the jack points. I know people have their cars up for days while they are being worked on though. Is the jack under the oil pan a safety for you? I'm not sure I'd put too much pressure on it for a long period. If you search on www.renntech.org , look under the DIY section about jack points....that might assist you some. What are you doing to the car anyway? Good luck

POST 6Original post

It also leads to catastrophic engine failure. There was a TSB on this I believe.

I would not do that! Get two more jack stands and after you have placed the front on the stands, jack up the rear as you noted above, but then place jack stands under the rear jacking points, just forward of the rear tires. Never, never, NEVER trust a hydraulic jack to hold up the car, especially if you will be under the car. I would not bet my life (literally) that the hydraulic jack will hold pressure for any length of time.

POST 8Original post

A good friend of mine didn't take the precautions in putting jack stands and just put the car up on ramps when he tried to disengage the transmission from the engine and pulled the car back off the ramps onto his chest. His wife found him under the car when she came home from work. His chest had been crushed by the transmission and he died in a coma three days later. You should NEVER work on it without jack stands. I even back up the stands with the hydraulic jack.

POST 9Original post

Using the Drivers's rear jack point lift the car enough to get a jackstand under the driver's front jack point. Then do the same with the passenger side. Last put the jack under the motor case and jack the back up from the rear. Then put the 2 rear jackstands in place at the same time at both rear jack points and let the car down. Wa-La! The car aint goin nowhere. Do the reverse to let it down.

You guys are funny. I had 2 jack stands on the rear mounting points + the hydraulic jack on the engine mount point and wood holding the front wheels stable. I don't need to jack up the front because I am only working on the back portion. I wouldn't ever just get under the car with JUST the hydraulic jack, I always have jack stands when working under the car and the hydraulic heavy duty jack as a backup support.

STRASPEC - I misread your original post. I thought you had the jack stands on the FRONT and then supporting the rear with only the hydraulic jack. That's why I mentioned getting two more jack stands.

POST 13Original post

Good to hear everyone using jack stands. But sometimes jack stands aren't enough. Let me offer a little advice. Since as long as I can remember I have been taught to take a "friend" under the car with me... The friend is one of our 10" wide rear wheels if that is the end of the car that you are working on. I position it so that it not too far from me and still not in my way. Last time I checked my head is a lot smaller then 10" and if something ever happened the wheel "will" hold the car. 2cents

I do the same thing Paul. I never work under a car without jackstands and I never trust jackstands. Jim

POST 15Original post

+1 on the jack stands and not just because of hydraulic failure. I worked as a truck mechanic in my youth and was lifting the front of a one ton dodge when the mechanical links attaching the ram to the bellcrank just blew off. The truck crashed down in an instant. Fortunately the only other damage was to my boxers. It's also a good idea to keep your soft parts out from between the jack stand and the vehicle when you are sliding the stands in.
