I didn't need to disconnect the airbag to do the fix, so no worries about the airbag light.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

9 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

  • Rennlist: 1 discussions

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Embarrasing. Just picked up my "new to me" 1999 996 and discovered that under hard braking the horn would beep. Now I drove two other cars that seemed to do this, but I just blew it off. I think it's a loose horn ring, but has anyone else experienced this?

POST 2Original post

Bet you have a 4 spoke steering wheel. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=1728

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Scared my first child last night. Yup, got the 4 spoke wheel. I knew someone would be able to bail me out. Just for clarification: Disconnect battery let car power down for 30+ minutes put key back in ignition to rotate wheel for access to bolts remove bolts remove horn frame to get at bolts and bushing thingies do the magical silicone fix reassemble in reverse order. Sound about right?

POST 6Original post

Sounds right. Except the 2 screws for the air bag don't actually come out. When you unscrew them the screws stay in the steering wheel. The air bag is heavy and as you start to unscrew it it will want to fall out. So support the air bag with one hand. There is a yellow connector on the back of the bag that you unplug.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm going to try this tomorrow. I'll let you know how I fair.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Update: The black silicone fix is the way to go. You really need to put large amounts on the back side of the bushing. I didn't need to disconnect the airbag to do the fix, so no worries about the airbag light. Thanks guys for steering me in the right direction!

POST 9Original post

I did the silicone fix about 6 months...to date, no issues. Cheapest fix in the world...that plus subscribing to rennlist and renntech!!
