I just got rid of my wifes 03 G500 and got her an 04 RR great truck fitted like a 7 series bimmer.

The car has been in the shop for wind noise (replaced a weather seal), a faulty auto-close on the sunroof sun shade (replaced a latch), a rattle in the rear (replaced a couple of trim pieces), nothing that rendered the car undrive-able.

Suggestion
It will recommend a highway exit that's 5 exits before the exit that's closest to the destination and recommend city streets over the highway (no, I don't have it in "least use of freeway" mode).

Suggestion
It is a great truck and although it gets terrible milage (13-14mpg), has the worlds worst nav, is expensive to repair, doesn't drive that well......where was i going with this.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi All,
I have a 2002 996 C2 and a Merc ML320 as my daily. I'm looking at changing my daily to either a 03-04 E55 or 03-05 Range Rover. I know these are pretty different cars, but was curious to hear your thoughts. I live in Kansas City and there are something like 5-10 bad snow day/yr on average. Again, I know that this is not an apples to apples comparison, but I'd like to hear your thoughts. I'm leaning towards the RR, but it's tough to look over the raw performance of the E55.
Thanks!
I have NEVER met anyone who was happy with their Range Rovers mechanically. They are beautiful, but total headaches. If it's gonna be a daily for you, plan on making sure your service dept. has loaners. Total headache car. I know that some will chime in and say their Rovers are the best cars they've had, but the consensus, I believe, is they suck.
J
I currently have a 99 SVC supercharged Range Rover, an 05 Range Rover, and a 01 SL600. The Rovers are fantastic family cars and they are incredible off road. ( I have had 4 Range Rovers and they have been very dependable....the newest with the BMW engine should be even better) If it's for your wife and family, get the Rover. If it's for you, get the AMG Mercedes....they are rockets.
My boss has an 05 E55 great car but get snow tires. I just got rid of my wifes 03 G500 and got her an 04 RR great truck fitted like a 7 series bimmer. Remember up to 04 BMW engines and electronics 05 and newer Jaguar engines and electronics also now 05 is first year!! Get an 04 or an 06 less headaches... Just my 2 cents.
get the RR only if you have 1 or 2 other cars... athough its THE BEST SUV you can buy, at the same time it wil be in the Garage atleast 5-10 weeks of the Year... Mechanical Issues
PS: RR does not make a good Daily Driver...
We bought our '03 Range Rover in August of 2003 and have not experienced any major issues. The car has been in the shop for wind noise (replaced a weather seal), a faulty auto-close on the sunroof sun shade (replaced a latch), a rattle in the rear (replaced a couple of trim pieces), nothing that rendered the car undrive-able.
The one thing that really drives me nuts about the car is the fact that the nav system often provides inefficient directions. It will recommend a highway exit that's 5 exits before the exit that's closest to the destination and recommend city streets over the highway (no, I don't have it in "least use of freeway" mode). I test drove other RR's on routes that I knew were problematic and the other RR's experienced the same problem. Coming home from Laguna Seca a few weeks ago, the nav system recommended a route that would have added 40 miles to my trip!!!!
We have 38,xxx miles on our RR.... about 3,000 towing my car. Could it be that I have the Marilyn Munster of the Range Rover family???
120k miles on my Rover, it's never spent more then a day in the shop. Best 4x4xFar.
But yea, the nav sucks.
No experience w/the E55. IMHO, Merc = old man's car.
An AMG sports sedan or a truck? There's a tough question...
As for the winter driving, I don't see any reason that an E55 would be any worse than any other RWD car in the winter--get yourself some good winter tires and you should be good to go.
Having been the sorry owner of a Range Rover I can only rubber-stamp what the JD Powers folk note.
Comfortable to sit in but reliablity should be the number one consideration. One would have to be a fool to even consider one without a warranty. There are a plethora of choices out there and in spite of some who've been lucky I wouldn't go near one unless you're a true risk-taker.
I really, really wanted to like the RR, but I'm beginning to think there's something to all the negative sentiment out there. I still might get a new RR with a warranty. Are there any cool and reliable SUVs out there? I'm not a big fan of the Cayenne and also I've heard they've had their fair share of issues.
I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss the Cayenne.
They worked the bugs out mid 05.
We have an 06 Cayenne S, an 03 996 Turbo, and an 02 LR Disco, and it's the Cayenne that gets the most miles put on it.
I have a '05 E55 so I'm clearly biased. I will admit there were a few niggly electrical problems when I first got it but since they were sorted out, it's been rock solid.
Get the E55, take all the numeric and "AMG" badging off it and let the games begin!
I have an 05 RR with 45K and a new trans. Thank God for the warranty, it was around 5K for the repairs. It is a great truck and although it gets terrible milage (13-14mpg), has the worlds worst nav, is expensive to repair, doesn't drive that well......where was i going with this.
My 03 RR has had no major issues. Wife's daily driver, but will be my tow vehicle when I get a trailer for the GT3. This is very comfortable on the road vehicle. 15 mpg highway, worse in the city when I drive. NAV is cumbersome at best.
I thought about an E55, but found a SL55 instead. AMG Mercs are fun and fast.
Both good additions to the P-car in the fleet.
