Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

19 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I had a new suspension installed about a year ago, H&R Street Performance coilovers. Took it in for an alignment today and decided to throw in the corner balance too. Total cost $500. I took it to a high end shop that builds and services Porsche race cars. Don't know if I'll really notice a difference but just thought I would provide a price data point if anyone was going to have the corner balance done.

POST 3Original post

Yea that sounds about right. I paid $275 for just an alignment and at independent Porsche peformance shop last year.

POST 4Original post

Can you share specs on alignment and corner weight data?

Sure, I'll will scan the printouts provided and post. I have no idea what it all means. I will say the car did seem to drive better. I drove 11 miles of twisty back roads between 30 - 60 mph on the way there this morning. On the way back the car just drove better. Ride height was adjusted slightly too.

POST 6Original post

Having my alignment done at the OPC this week, it's $195. Not sure what a corner balance and coil over alignment is worth.

POST 7Original post

I am looking to go coilovers, and recently inquired about this with my local indy shop. Alignment was $165 Corner balance was ~$400 The kicker was, i figured just have them install too. Pfft, he said ~$200 per corner. For $800, i will take the time to put them on myself, then take it there for alignment and balance

POST 8Original post

Firestone, lifetime alignment, $180! But after the 4th time, they started getting a little cranky so I just switched stores for the 5th one. Corner balance you just want to make sure your cross weights are even with driver or equivalent weight In the driver's seat. Alignment spec on my '99 DD: Front 0 camber 0 toe Rear -1.2 camber and 1mm of toe in And on my '99 track car: Front -4.4 camber and 2mm toe out Rear -3.8 camber and 2mm toe in

That's pretty close to what I paid as well. Mine is basically the same, though it was way off after I finished the install!

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Total Weight: 3390 Fuel Tank: 50% full Driver: 160 lbs LF:629 RF:617 LR: 1106 RR: 1038 Cross Weight 1723 (50.8%) - 50/50 is ideal, perfect Cross Weight 1667 (49.2%) The best achievable cross weight was 50.3 and 49.7. I didn't want to pay the extra for them to attempt to reach this. Ride height is lower than factory.

POST 11Original post

ejdoherty911 I'm in Philly too. What shop did you go to? Also, do you track the car? If so, what club?

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 14188181

Shop: Dougherty Automotive Services, 17 Hagerty Blvd. West Chester, PA 19382 The only tracking I do is the occasional visit to New Jersey Motorsport Park for the "Track Days" $190 for classroom instruction, tech inspection, and 4 x 20 minute sessions around the track. It's almost impossible to beat that price for the experience.

POST 13Original post

A good shop will have the same exact values on both sides

Well after 121,000 miles, 15 years, an aftermarket suspension, sometimes pretty darn close is the best you're going to get. I can live with it.

POST 15Original post

Doesn't matter if the suspension is factory or aftermarket as long as its not worn out Was it done with a laser rack or strings? For $500, it should be perfect. Here are my alignment results

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I readily admit I don't know much about alignments, but I trust this shop and their reputation. That said, a couple of my readings are off by hundredths of a degree. Are you suggesting that is so far off as to be negligent? My understanding of these modern alignment machines is you can "get it perfect" then walk away to put down your coffee and when you turn back around the reading have changed. Before computers and technical advancements alignments within 1/8 of a degree were acceptable. That's 12.5 hundredths of a degree. I only see two readings off. One by 5 hundredths of a degree and one by 3 hundredths of a degree. I can live with that, but then again I'm not too bright which helps ease the pain of reality.

POST 17Original post

LOL Back when I was a roadie, that small a measure was expressed as a c_nt hair, if especially small a red c_nt hair or in mixed company a gnat's eyelash One reason a string alignment is better is accuracy. With a proper scale and magnifier, you can get to down to less than .5mm a laser is no better than 1mm (diameter of the beam). That is also assuming the laser rack has been properly aligned. With strings, by nature, you have to align them each time to set up a car Of course, the tech doing the alignment and how precise they are factors in

POST 18Original post

$500 is exactly the price I was quoted for alignment/rideheight/corner balance. Now I just need to get the coilovers ordered and installed. D.

POST 19Original post

The Firestone Lifetime Alignment is a great deal. Used to be about $160 and then you could find a discount coupon. Normally get this for all our cars. Sadly the C4S can't be done at Firestone. They said you need a computer and software to talk to the PSM to let the care know how it is set up. Thought about offering my Durametric but figured tehy would net go for it. Kind of miss my old air-cooleds at times.
