A friend and I made a 3 hour drive into the mountains 2 weeks ago and we swapped cars quite a bit.

If you're thinking of changing because you're getting bored with your 996, why not try a few mods?

If you really want to change, I think that I might eventually swap out my '02 for a Cayman S.

F355: Like Ben says, save for a 360, but that's like a lifestyle change more than anything.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Obviously this is somewhat personal preference, but I thought I'd post to see if anyone had similar thoughts. I currently have an 02 996. Though I like it a lot, I've become a little less excited by it and thinking of replacing with something different. Here are my thoughts and concerns:
996TT (Nice, but same basic shape as my car and somehow looking at/or driving a 996TT doesn't excite me that much. It's fast, but feels rather soft)
Carrera S (Looks nice, never driven one but hear it's a great drivers car)
993 TT (love the way it looks and like its rawness. I think it will always have a timeless value even 10-20yrs from now. Only concern is with the maintenance I'd have to deal with - nots sure how bad this is???)
Ferrari F355 ( like the 993 TT, I love its look and performance but this car I know is VERY expensive to maintain)
SL55 (Very different from the rest I know, but it's a great all around car and lot more fun than I expected - just not one for the track).
I have a Mercedes ML as my other car, and I'm looking for something that can offer a spirited drive once in a while, but could also be used as a daily driver. Any thoughts/opinions welcome.
Thanks!
I've the same thought about another 996 as you expressed, so I personally wouldn't get another 996 just as it looks to similar. I couldn't sit in a car that costs me another $30k but still has the same interior.
I'm not sure if the 993tt would satisfy you in the long run. A lot of 993 owners that went to a 996 seem to be pretty impressed.
The 355 is a great looking car. However I think reliability is a total different issue on an Italian diva compared to a Porsche.
A friend and I made a 3 hour drive into the mountains 2 weeks ago and we swapped cars quite a bit. He has a SL500. It's a very smooth car it's also fast but you need to look at the speedometer to realize that it's fast. For me it feels like an S class as convertible and it's almost as heavy as the S class. I was surprised that he cooked his brakes on one pretty fast stretch of the tour. Sure the SL55 has more hp but it's the same heavy pig.
I'd personally go for the 997S2. I like the looks and still believe the Top Gear comment that it's very close in its performance to the 996 GT3.

Save up a bit more for a 360 for a true upgrade. 996TT is soft and is a GT coupe. Heck, even the 997TT I flogged was quick, but not viscerally fun to drive.
Here's an F-car that my buddy recently picked up that sounds insane, turns heads like you had Paris Hilton in the passenger side, and drives like a proper sports car.
If you're thinking of changing because you're getting bored with your 996, why not try a few mods? A suspension upgrade would transform the driving experience for a lot less money than changing to a new car.
If you really want to change, I think that I might eventually swap out my '02 for a Cayman S.
I agree with this recommendation on mods. I did a few to my 02 Coupe that have made me thrilled with it again. X74 suspension, short-shift kit, PSE and a thorough, complete car detail should get you excited about your car again. These mods drastically alter the character of the car. It feels lighter, much tighter and simply more exciting. If that doesn't work for you, I would go 997 GT3. That's the only other Porsche that I truly want. I echo the comments above about going to a 996TT in that the increased "softness" and weight and too similar interior would be too much of a negative to make that change.
I'll try...these are all just opinions, but here goes:
996TT: The one I'd choose...best bang for the buck, no questions asked
C2S: I'm surprised you're including this one since you already have the 996TT on the list...I'd probably go with a C4S over a C2S, but the 996TT over either.
993TT: Different ballgame...it'll FEEL more like a sports car, but the numbers won't stack up with the 996TT...they don't depreciate much. Kinda old-school, which sounds like a good time at first, but...
F355: Like Ben says, save for a 360, but that's like a lifestyle change more than anything. You won't even want to leave the car in a parking lot.
SL55: More power doesn't cancel out more weight, and this thing has almost a ton too much...Edmunds claims about 4300 lbs...more of a cruiser, in my eyes.
Good luck...that's a nice problem to have!
Frankly, I'd say a 997GT3 or (from left field) a 1972 911 S ;-)
I keep going back and forth between oldies and new cars, and I can't decide which one I like more. I think if th eoldies has decent A/C I'd stick to those ;-) But the GT3, oooohhh...
If you are not going to track the car ever, then don't buy a GT3, the GT3 is more at home on the track IMHO. Sure it would be nice to have one just for street but a waste of money if you ask me. Go for the TT or step up to a 360 F car.
this heart still yearns for a TT but I have never been in a GT3 so I guess when it comes time I will- I lost all desire for the ferarri when a friend had one and spent thousands and was always in the shop. The looks that you got in the car wore off quick for me when it cost so much per mile to drive. I guess the new ones are better to maintain but still. Probably just the luck of it and he drove the **** out of it but he is back in a p-car now for almost 2 years and happy.
Is that a Stradale? If so...I know what you mean on the sound. Had a guy show up in one last year on our autumn fun run. One of the best sounding beasts I've ever heard.....ever.

Logic tells me 997 C2S becuase it's a newer car with a warranty. However, my gut tells me 993 TT, but then again my gut has not always been right.
996TT seems like it might be a good compromise, but I think I'd have it and be excited for about a week and then interest would taper off. Incidentally my budget is to spend less that 70K, ideally 65K.
For your budget, I'd go with the 997S (amongst the ones you listed).
I like to try new cars...jumping into a 996TT from a 996, it'll feel like your in the same car (at least until you jump on the gas). The interior of the 997 is quite different (better IMO)--of course the benefits of a new car are nice (warranty, etc.).
for 65k, you could go for a new M3. this may feel like a "step down" but it does have about as much power as a 996TT. Plus, it's a bit more practical.
Of course, if you're willling to break open the piggy bank, Ferrari 360 can't be touched IMO. good luck regardless of how you decide...it's a nice dilemma to have!
New M3 is actually a great idea! IMO it's more a step up than down (prestige aside). This vid is in German but shows that the new M3 is a great car with lots of potential and a high fun factor, even compared to the 997GT3!

Test drove the BMW M6 the other day. Being 6'2", I always thought of getting a long body style car like the BMW 6 series or the Jag XK.
I can throw a few girls in the rear seats of an M6 (rear seats are bigger than our 911s) after partying from a night club, and still carry a couple of golf clubs in the trunk. M6 is not as charismatic as our 911s, but definitely more practical.
Let us know what you got.
I went from an 02 Boxster to an 03 996 Turbo. Although the interior looks the same, I never feel like I'm in the same car - the driving dynamics are so different.
I actually found that I liked that the interior is similar because I didn't have to re-learn the intuitive reach for controls...
I test drove a 997, 997s, 997C4s - the draw of the 996 Turbo was the seemingly limitless torque at all ranges.
Enjoy your search and your new car whatever you decide on...
