If the car will not be driven at all this winter, I would also put in either a conventional, lightweight oil or at minimum, a seal conditioner and run the car to full operating temp before shutting it down for the winter.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Surprise - I'm going to be putting my baby to bed for the winter in November, and have a question on routine maintenance. Car has all of 2400 miles (!) - new synthetic was put in at 1100 miles when I got the car 1 1/2 years ago. I plan to have oil/filter changed, and also have the brake system bled. Question - is there a need to have the cooling system flushed? It's never been done. Or can it be considered a "closed" system that wouldn't require it at this point? If not now, when should I have it done? Thanks!!
Suggest you bleed the brakes in the spring. If the car will not be driven at all this winter, I would also put in either a conventional, lightweight oil or at minimum, a seal conditioner and run the car to full operating temp before shutting it down for the winter. Coolant should be changed about every 3 - 4 years.
Your coolant should be fine.
I'd also recommend adding 10lbs of pressure to each tire to help prevent flat spots and use a Porsche battery maintainer.
Do a search. There is a lot of good info on this topic out there.
Beside above and of course cleaning the car inside and outside, I'd further treat the rubber sealings, keep the windows a little open and beside increasing the tire pressure also move the car some inches evey couple of weeks.
Great - thanks, Ray. That's pretty much what I thought and what I plan to do. I'm planning on putting in Mobil 1 0-40 and also filling the tank (and adding Stabil to it).
<shakes head>
So, did you reach 100 miles for the year?
The poor car doesn't know that Groundhog Day even passed - it spent so much time sleeping that it made Rip van Winkle look like an all night party animal.
Phil - check the RTR forum, I posted hibernation instructnios there sometime last October.
It's funny, my tolerance for increased probabilty of rain increases through september, october and november as I try to squeeze in more driving days before the car goes away. I was so annoyed last year when I put the car away in November and the weather stayed good until january.
<sigh> < Tim shakes his head very s-l-o-w-l-y and thinks to himself "Man, Phil is really a piece of work! >
What do you mean put her away?!?!?!? You first have to take her OUT of hibernation in order to be able to put her back into hibernation.
Stop!! JUST STOP!!!!! You're killing me here!!!! There is no way you drove 650 miles going up and down your driveway!
OK, seriously, here is your hibernation check list:
1. Full tank of gas, with Stabil - CHECK
2. 10 PSI in the tires to reduce flat spotting - CHECK
3. Fresh fill of Mobile 10W-40 - CHECK
4. Activate the "
little green 3/4 circle (speedo icon with arrow) gage
" (a.k.a. Cruse Control) so the car actually thinks it is going somewhere during the winter - PRICELESS
Jeez, the crap I have to endure to get some winter maintenance questions answered.
Tim, "hibernation" is a relative term. And you'll simply not forgive me for not knowing the little green circle and arrow was the cruise control indictator in the first place. When you get to be my age, you'll understand all of this. Good thing you guys know what you're talking about, or I'd have to check out the Buick LeSabre boards...
Phil - I would be willing to bet you "2,000 miles of driving in 2008" that I am probably older than you are, so your "age" is not the reason you didn't know about the "little green circle and arrow" thingy! It was because you never needed to set cruse control while driving up and down your driveway, so you couldn't possibly have know what it was!
Tim, I just realized that I run 20-25 miles/week. Conservatively, that's 1000 miles/year. Which means I put more miles on my feet than I do my Porsche. Maybe if I stop running over the winter, I'll inflate my shoes for foot maintenance. Damn, I gotta start driving this thing! I may bet you 1,000 miles in 2008 that I'm older than you, but you're pushing it with a 2,000 mile bet...
If there is minimal risk, then it's no fun betting. How much of a gambler are you? Personally, I am not much of a gambler but I'll "roll the dice" if there is a chance I can get you to drive your car MUCH more next year.
Think about it this way - what do you have to lose? If you
win
the bet, you can maintain status quo. If you
lose
the bet, you "win" because you will spend more time in your beautiful C4S. Sounds like a "no brainer" bet to me!
Besides, everyone here on Rennlist is going to have to drive their P-cars more next year anyway so ya'll can make up for the miles I won't drive in my car after I sell it. After all, the Porsche Phorce MUST stay in balance!
So Phil..... do we have a bet???????
Tim, you had to do this while I wasn't around!
I knew that Phil was older than you. Now you've blown any chance that Phil will ever take his car beyond the end of his driveway.
Think about the pitiful sight - Phil sitting at the end of the driveway in his C4S. He's watching the traffic zoom by at a scary 65mph - a sad and whistful tear in his eye as he wishes that he could go and play with the big boys. Suddenly, inspired, he breaks out the bag of throat losenges (he buys in bulk from BJ's) and erupts into an enthusiastic chorus of Vrrrrrroooooommmm!!! exclamations for the next half hour. After getting all the pent up "driving" out of his system he sheds another lonely tear and slowly pulls the C4S back into the garage and covers it up for the Winter.
Well, I was scraping the bottom of the barrel just trying to find a way to get him to drive his C4S. I've tried to embarrass him ("little green 3/4 circle" thingy) [THAT one still cracks me up every time I think about it]..... tried to threaten him..... I have told him that his car will rot if it isn't driven...... and so far nothing has worked!
I thought if I could get him to bet me I had a chance win and he would be compelled and honor bound to "pay up" on the bet by driving 2,000 miles next year. I'm at the end of my rope! I fear that all is lost!
hi...my winterizing is a bit different than Phil's. I just ordered a winter set of knockoffs and Blizzaks. With AWD...what the hell...right? I returned my '06 3 series yesterday as the lease just ended. I put 22 miles on it since june...lol. On the other hand.....I have put over 5K on my 4S in the same time. Holy Moly....I have put twice the mileage on in 3 months than Phil has put on since his car was born. Phil, it's the greatest thing in the world. I really didn't anticipate using my car as a daily thru the winter, but I just can't imagine not driving it for prolonged periods. It's no good for these things....geeeeeez.
And to really get things going, should I stick with 0W-40 in the cold months? Don't feel like doing a search to sift thru a gazillion threads.

Hi Tim,
I'm still up in the air with 19's for non winter....so many choices. And last night, as I was wiping down the wheel dust, I stood back and asked myself...."why the hell are you getting wheels already? These stock twists look fantastic". so, I may just sit it out a bit, or wait to see if I get tired of them down the road. At that point, maybe I'll grab some wheels to "spruce" up the look. Although with my alignment issue, I just ordered Falken 452's all around. I have them on my '85, and they have been fantastic, on the track as well. So, I'll give them a shot for this car too. I'm really into getting great bang for the buck (but I'm not cheap!!). I really like my ps2's, but the rears are almost shot on the inside....too much neg. camber I think. Once I get the new tires, I'll get an alignment and see how it was set before.
As far as knockoffs for the snow, I got the techno style, which I happen to like a lot as well. They are for the NB cars, so I'll probably end up getting spacers for the rears, but I'm gonna see how they look without them first. I figure they will retract by about 1/2 inch (15mm), so we'll see. I'm kinda excited to see what this car can do in the snow. Not that I'm gonna go nuts or anything, but it's really gonna be nice to be able to actually move, as opposed to my CRAPPY bimmer in the snow, which was returned yesterday as the lease ended. I haven't driven it since I got this P car. I ended getting stuck 3 times last winter.....and I consider myself a very competent winter driver. The tires (didn't get snows) on that car SUCKED BIG TIME. I hated them. Felt like I was a mustang gt.
Anyhow, here's the link to the replicas....and the price is great, especially for wheels that are basically gonna get a bit beat up with the elements. I'm interested to see how they will hold up, but again, the price is great.

Phil....sorry for the hijack. Please forgive us.

Well, that's good to hear!
In 2008, you and I will be be in the same boat as far as driving the Porsche. You will have a 996 but probably won't drive it much because you won't get the opportunity to do so. I will no longer own a 996, and will want to drive it every day. How ironic is that!
