BTW...the filter that I took out was exact same part number as the one that went in, and the oil was changed by the dealer before I took possession of the car, so I'm assuming is a non issue.

Suggestion
I let the oil drain for over an hour which allows far more oil to drain out than the recommended 20 minute drain time.

Suggestion
I believe most sources quote filling with less than 9 quarts of new oil during a change because they do not allow for a long drain time.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
12 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

Although, the tool I used to loosen the oil filter housing did not work to tighten it (only calls for 19 ft.
Hi all,
Gonna change the oil for my first time on the 996. According to most parts websites, the 996 used the same oil filter b/w '99 and '04. However, Loren on his DIY oil article on Renntech.org indicates in his parts recuired (still no "cue" button) as different filters for the 3.4 and 3.6 litre engines.
It appears as though I have the 3.4 filter for my 3.6 ride. I got it from Pelican, and that do not differentiate b/w the two, so I'm gonna compare them when I yank the old filter off. Will I be OK with that?
And...if I do need to replace the filter, can I do that without draining the oil? Can I replace the filter whenever I want? In other words, will any oil drip or pour out when if I were to remove the filter without draining the oil first?
Thanks,
J
Filter is the same. I use the same filter in my 2000 CAB as I do in my GT3. And.....the Cayenne uses the same filter as well (S and TT only) as does the Boxster.
I just did the oil change.....what a freagin' breeze....even easier than my '85. But I'm spoiled...I have a lift and an elevated oil container that holds a gazillion gallons. Takes a damn long time to empty all the oil though....seemed to trickle forever. Although, the tool I used to loosen the oil filter housing did not work to tighten it (only calls for 19 ft. lbs.). I tightened as tight as I could by hand, I hope that's OK. I'll eventually pick up the right wrench, but after a hard drive, no issues down below. BTW...the filter that I took out was exact same part number as the one that went in, and the oil was changed by the dealer before I took possession of the car, so I'm assuming is a non issue.
Also, my car took almost 10 cuarts (no "cue" button....stilllll)... in order to bring the level all the way up. Isn't that like 1.25 more than it's suppose to take?
J

The last time I did an oil change on my 2000 Carrera it took about 9 2/3 quarts to completely fill it. I let the oil drain for over an hour which allows far more oil to drain out than the recommended 20 minute drain time. I believe most sources quote filling with less than 9 quarts of new oil during a change because they do not allow for a long drain time.
Just be sure not to overfill when adding the new oil.
Mine takes very nearly 10 quarts if I drain the hot engine for 30 minutes. I think if you did it quickly or with a lukewarm engine, you'd end up with the book fill.
The o-ring makes the seal, the torque spec is just to make sure the filter housing doesn't loosen and fall off. You should be OK with it hand tight until you can go to a generic parts store and buy the filter wrench (AmPro 74/76mm).
