Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am considering purchasing a 2001 Porsche 911 Turbo coupe 6-speed with just over 20,000 miles. Car is super pristine - looks like new inside and outside. Drives like a dream. Good and consistent service history. PPI came back great and mechanic said clean as a whistle. DME report was clean - number of ignitions range 1: 615, number of ignitions range 2: 0 and operating hours of 571 hours and total distance display of 20,310 miles. I own various 2000-2013 Porsches (911s, Caymans and Boxsters) and put little miles on the cars. This car I will drive occasionally, but not more than 500 miles a year. Color is black on black. MSRP was $114k. Options include: Soft look full leather seats, Driver and passenger seat lumbar support, Wheel caps with Porsche Colored Crest, Digital Sound Package and AM/FM Stereo with CD. The price of car is $130,000. Am I overpaying based on today's market and future price projection?

POST 2Original post

Color combo and options can make a huge difference. Sounds a little high for a run of the mill silver on gray, but if its a unique color combo and has a few nice options like sport seats, carbon fiber, X50!? etc...

Thank you. Based on your feedback I updated my post with color, MSRP and options. Appreciate the feedback.

POST 4Original post

Look at BaT prior sales. Have been halfheartedly in the market for a project TT for a couple years, and have kept up on pricing. Make no mistake, in the last couple years TT have gone ballistic in price for a good low mile example. And they seem to just be going higher and higher with no end in sight. $130K for a very low 20,000 mile car without accidents, in superb pristine condition, is not out of line from what they've been going for on auction sights lately. Actually that might be a bargain. Seen many pristine examples go for close to 200K. You could try and hold out for the perfect color combo and option list like me, with no TT in the garage for years now. Could have got a very nice one 3-4 years ago for 40K. Waiting for the perfect car,,, I've missed out, don't let yourself be like me. I doubt you'll ever lose mony on that car, probably will be worth $200k soon with the low miles you plan on... good luck, enjoy that car. I'm envious... A little less mileage, similar cost https://bringatrailer.com/listing/20...urbo-coupe-28/ https://bringatrailer.com/listing/20...rbo-coupe-123/ A little more miles https://bringatrailer.com/listing/20...rbo-coupe-121/ A little less miles but similar cost, same year similar color/ops https://bringatrailer.com/listing/2001-porsche-911-turbo-coupe-142-2/ jmho

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thank you so much. Your reply is very helpful. Appreciate it.

POST 6Original post

All of the Mezger engine cars are getting priced out of sight. A driver GT3 is now pushing $150k and GT2's are 300k and up. 997's are even more (997.2 turbo is no longer Mezger though). There were a lot more 996 Turbo made, of course, about 18,000 of them.

POST 7Original post

Although the milage helps its value, at $130K, you're over paying a lot! Nice examples of turbo's in this condition have been at or sub $100k even on BaT.......I would certainly keep searching! Nice car but also remember, the more these cars sit the more problems they will have as well.....just a thought.

POST 8Original post

Quotes source post: 20740423

True about the quantity of 996 Turbo's, but a large proportion of them were equipped with automatic transmissions. A low mileage 6MT will carry a premium...add the X50 option and it's off to the races.

POST 9Original post

That's true, we have a spreadsheet listing every 996TT and there's about 7000 hardtop 6-speed cars total. A fairly mundane silver 6TT, 55k miles, just hammered on cars & bids for 90k.

POST 10Original post

I think these cars will emulate the home crisis of 2020 where people were buying homes for considerably more then what they were worth only to find themselves upside down 6 years later. These cars (at least in my mind) are not worth $100k but I guess it comes down to one's subjective value.

POST 11Original post

Quotes source post: 20741232

There's a lot of variables lingering. Disposable income right now is taking a hit for a lot of people. Younger people seem less interested in cars (driving as a whole, let alone collector / sports cars). There will always be enthusiasts, but I think as time goes on people's priorities are going to continue to shift, so prices will stabilize. Go backwards...., not so sure, but reaching a plateau seems very possible. These cars may not be worth $100k to you, but apparently are for many. No more are being made so low mile / well kept examples will always do well.

POST 12Original post

Quotes source post: 20740423

Exactly correct. Its the trend nowadays... 10 years ago a 996 GT2/3 could be had for $50-70k depending on its condition. now even a mediocre GT3 example with higher miles gets $150K+. A 996 GT2 is now priced in the stratosphere.. From what I've been seeing on the auction sites as of late, all 996 TT seem soon to follow GT prices imo. GT'3 will be over 200k All 996 Mezger cars are now considered a collectors item. There are so many Porsche car collectors now, some with huge collections, some with very small collections. All of them want pristine examples from every generation 911... And TT & GT's are the ones everyone wants, especially the GT.... Here is how much a collector recently paid for a Mezger engine 996 TT in pristine almost new condition...$400K. Once those type cars disappear from the market to permanent owners, higher mile, pristine, no accident, all original OEM cars, will take their place with 200K+ pricing, just a matter of time... https://bringatrailer.com/listing/20...bo-s-coupe-24/ jmho

POST 13Original post

I think $130K is a very clean driver 997.1 turbo money. Black is not desirable is most places. If you are going to drive it I think its over priced. If you are going to look at it in your garage the appreciation may keep up with inflation. What really catches is me, at every car ive ever looked at with the operating hours and miles, the average is always ~35 miles per hour.

POST 14Original post

What is happening at the top of the windshield? It looks strange" in both photos.

POST 15Original post

Quotes source post: 20741232

I think the exact opposite. There is a shift in demand right now away from new exotics into older ones. The analog car craze. Im a lifetime car enthusiast in my mid 40s, and reaching the point of having a fair amount of disposable income. I could afford a 991 or 992, but I have no desire for one. All my desires are for 997 or previous generations. Thats what will keep all these cars high and appreciating. 996 Turbo is still the best buy in the exotic/supercar world.

POST 16Original post

Price seems high to me. BTW, have you actually seen the car in person? I'm wondering about the windshield too. Pictures like that scream AI to me. It just doesn't look right!!

POST 17Original post

Ok, I figured out what is up, the windshield seal has come loose. This is what it should look like:

POST 18Original post

Quotes source post: 20741629

it's the window seal. On mine, the underlying hard plastic channel was broken and the seal would not stay in place. I used sealant to keep it in place. Since then I've replaced the windshield so of course that too was replaced

POST 19Original post

As a current owner I would be thrilled if that wasn’t overpaying. It’s a great car, but only you can determine if it’s too much or not. I wouldn’t be spending that kind of coin on a 996 but it seems others will.

POST 20Original post

Not a turbo 996 owner, but have always kept an eye on the market in case I ever wanted to upgrade. The last 2 years have gone bonkers in the 6tt marketplace. I’d love a tip if the TCU had some good programming options for shift speed, with a corresponding paddle upgrade. Maybe Aaron could speak to the TCU thing, but I’m one who needs to be able to exploit the capabilities I’m paying for. $100+ for any flavor 996 is a lot. $130k is GT4 money.

POST 21 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks all. I appreciate the feedback and insight. I decided to pass on the car for now given the price. I know it may be more money if I want to purchase a clean low mile 996 Turbo at a later time.
