If I recall correctly, I ran almost 2 seconds quicker on a longish course with my TC off (I had a 99 with LSD and TC).

Suggestion

I have found PSM to very rarely come on during track use, only on bumps but it's nice to know it's there if you screw the pooch.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm looking for one mainly for drivers ed use - since these cars are cheaper now. Confused about what options are better for track use? Did all 99's come with LSD standard? Was traction control an option - did it include LSD? Can the traction control be completely turned off. What are main differences between MY99 and MY00? When did E-gas come on the 996? Was sunroof optional back then? Did any post MY99 cars come with TC/LSD? When did PSM first become standard on the 996? thanks

I'll take a first whack at it. Other will fill in the holes. Sunroofs could be deleted but it's very rare. LSD is was not standard but was available. If you find one it is likely shot anyway. Non-egas is better than egas. Egas is on the 99 C4 and all cars 2000+. No need for TC. You don't have enough power to worry too much about spinning the huge rear tires.

POST 3Original post

PSM was an option and can be turned off. However, it's never really off, a lot like PMS.

POST 4Original post

Okay, I know the 99 was the year that LSD was an option for the 911... not available on the 2000. Now I have a 99 with the LSD, but the comment above that most are shot seems odd... how is that determined? What are the indications that it might be shot? I have also heard the non e-gas is preffered for throttle response and that the 99 is also somewhat lighter. Of course my opinion is biased as I have a 99! P.S. My car also has the Traction Control, I believe this can be totally disabled with the dashboard switch unlike PSM. Is that correct? David

POST 5Original post

I purchased a 01 (high milage) for track use this year after 4 events I could not be happier w/ the decision. I went w the 01 because PSM was standard. I have found PSM to very rarely come on during track use, only on bumps but it's nice to know it's there if you screw the pooch.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My understanding was like Reborn996. Was traction control available with and without LSD? I also think TC can be completely disabled while PSM can be turned off but will come back on under heavy braking. If I find a car without TC and no LSD - Can I install LSD? Is the throttle response better without e-gas?

POST 7Original post

What is the purpose of turning off TC or PSM ? My experience w/ PSM is that it is very non intrusive, in addition to feeling when it acctivates it also lights up on the dash you know when it comes on. You have to realy have the back end hanging out to get it to engage. I had my car out in the rain on Summit Point yesterday and it did not come on even during controled slides. So if it is not comming on it is not slowing you down. If you are not building a drift car why would you want to turn it off ?

Your PSM must be tuned quite differently than my MY99 C4's PSM, which comes on quickly and regularly during semi-moderate cornering.

The PSM on my 01 and my 04 rarely comes on - I only really got it going in a parking lot with about 2" of snow - justing seeing how far I could push the cars before PSM came on.

I can't say on the track but on an autocross, disabling your PSM is very desirable as it actually allows the car to rotate when decelerating. If I recall correctly, I ran almost 2 seconds quicker on a longish course with my TC off (I had a 99 with LSD and TC). I drove a buddies 02 and the car was fast and capable but when you over cooked the front end, the rear would not rotate even with the PSM off as if you touched the brakes in a slide the PSM would activate and try to "Fix" what you where doing. The only way I found around this is to lift on initial turn in and add a bit more steering input to try to get the car to rotate. It works but is no where near as fun as being able to lift mid corner to correct if you need to. I drove the car with PSM on and it was really boring as the car would under steer more than with it off. I also was quite a bit faster with it off than on. I suspect that PSM on track is very useful but on an autocross, it's not nearly as fun or as fast with it on. Hope this helps, Pete

POST 13Original post

Riz, You can add an aftermarket LSD. It will be much better than the stock unit. Both because it will be more durable and because you can have it tuned to your needs. I wouldnt make an LSD my first mod. These cars come off corners pretty well without it. Throttle response is faster and more predictable without egas. You dont have a computer interpreting what you mean by mashing the peddle. Frankly I dont think traction control is needed at the track. It might actually get in the way. I think PSM is fine for a beginner/intermediate but will really get in the way as your track driving advances. The fast way through many corners in a 996 is to turn in early and fast and rotate the car under trail braking before the apex. Then back on the gas before or at the apex. Think of it as the fast in, fast out method. You dont want PSM second guessing your intentions. If you are a nice smooth, slow in, fast out driver PSM is a great safety net. BTW, you can drive very fast without engaging PSM. Or you can drive very slow and have it blinking like pinball machine. As always, just my 2 cents. I could be wrong. Jim

POST 14Original post

Just a quick note - it's not that expensive to drop a LSD in the tranny. I still say buy as new as you can afford and mod the heck out of her. C.

POST 15Original post

I can defintly see the logic in turning off PSM for autocross . as for JimB's comments I would will have to claim a problem of LOFT (Lack of #*@^ing talent ) on my part.

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Can LSD be added to PSM car? - I thought they were incompatable. I'm little confused as to which years the 996 had LSD, TC or both. Just to make sure - TC is compatable with LSD, and TC can be totally switched off right? Thanks everybody.

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Also what problems to watch out for and identify on 99 996 C2 - engine/drivetrain related? When did they switch over to E-gas? Are all 99's throttle cable? Any non-sunroof cars our there? I have begun searching for car.

POST 18Original post

The 99's that have traction have LSD (was an option) and so do the 40th anniversary cars do too. Look for the 220 option code as that is the LSD code (in the 99). All of the C2's have cable throttle (for 99). Also, the TC can be completely deactivated. In terms of engine problems, the 99's where more problematic than later models with RMS, cylinder sleeve issues and intermix problems. Many cars have replaced their motors so don't shy away from those cars. There can even be an argument that replacement motor cars are a bit more desirable considering they have all of the latest engine updates (depending on what year the engine was put in). IIRC- 2001 was the switch over to E-gas in the C2. I remember something about the c4's all having E-gas but I'll let someone else chime in as I'm not sure on that. Hope this helps, Pete

POST 19Original post

ALL 996's, with the exception of the 99 C2, have egas.

POST 20Original post

Called suncoast Porsche this morning about MAF part numbers. 99C4 MAF have the same part number as my egas part number. There are two MAF part numbers one for egas and the other.

Has anyone here added LSD to a PSM car? Is there anything to consider regarding the PSM?
