My 3.2 was just overwhelmed by the race cars and cup cars and their like that play in the upper run groups, but it was very willing and we gave them a run for their $$$ in the corners!

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have a 964 C2 and 993 C4S and thinking about an early 996 as occasional street/track car. I've done a little track time in both and in brand new ( but stock) 997 and 997S but never in 996. I'm wondering how do these cars compare on the track. I'm assuming some suspension, tire and brake mods. I'm hoping someone with some experince in a 996 and 993 and/or 964 can weigh in. TIA

POST 3Original post

Ritter, I think everyone is a little sick of these threads turning into major pissing matches. In short, you'll find the early 996 to be better on the track than your C4S. While the C4S is one of the best looking Porsches ever, it's heavy weight, AWD, aging chassis and lack of power hurt it on the track. Besides, it's way too pretty to beat up. A 964 makes a fine track car but doesn't have the chassis or the power to run with a 996. I hope this helps. BTW, if someone wants to argue, go somewhere else. I'm not interested. Jim

POST 4Original post

my DE instructor has a 993c4s and has taken me on rides on track, he also tracked my car, 996c4 and he was surprised that the 996 is a better track car than his 993... both with modded supension, the 996 was considerably better... (me as a novice can also tell that the 996 was better on corners). he is now buying a 996 as a track car. What he liked about the 996 was you can focuse on the line better since the 996 just had no drama in it, for the most part, its point and shoot... Like what JimB said, no arguements here, nuff said.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks guys- thats all I looking for. Appreciated.

POST 6Original post

there are ALWAYS exceptions, but in a general and overly simplified sense, everything being equal, the newer cars are better. better in the sense that it produced better lap time. driving feel is subjective. i am not considering running cost, dependability, reliability, longevity etc.

Mooty is right on!! I have instructed a few folks with early 996's, cabs no less, and have found that car to have good turn-in behavior and being a good feeling car on-track. Looks, styling, build quality and reliability aside, the newest 911 variant should produce the best lap time.

POST 8Original post

Chris hinted at it. My 996 out handles my 964 hands down.....but, the build quality sucks. Not as good as my daughters Honda and no where near the 964? Just ignore the rattles and have fun!

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The rattles on the 996 I presume you mean. Do you?? My 964 has 138k and is rock solid and quiet. The glove box on the 993 (46k) makes a little noise from time to time but thats it.

POST 10Original post

Ritter, just an FYI, I posted a similar question on the Racing and DE forum under "$17 vs $27K." I was looking at a 964 vs a 996 as a track car that was still street legal. I was really interested in the lower entry cost of the 964, but in the end, I think I'll go with the 996 as it is hard to beat new tech. Like you, I am looking to do limited modifications. I take it you do not want to do DE with the C2 you already have? It would be a great car to learn on, but if it is "too nice" believe me, I get it. Your 993 C4S, as I think you have discovered, is a bit too heavy for serious track use. If, like me, you have been at DE / TT for almost 10 years, then the 996 is a better choice, IMHO. My 3.2 was just overwhelmed by the race cars and cup cars and their like that play in the upper run groups, but it was very willing and we gave them a run for their $$$ in the corners! I learned how to drive a slow car fast, so I feel I'm ready for the move to the 996. That said, the 996 can be a good platform to learn with too, and it's advanced safety features should not be overlooked. The main thing, is find what you are comfortable in and have fun.
