Suggestion
I don't think the car actually locks when it double beeps....but you should check your manual...that should clear things up....hopefully.

Then strangely after I was heading home after dinner, everything seemed to go back to normal - no double beep on opening the car and the lock switch and passenger window worked fine.

I have a 2002 996 C2. About a week ago, the alternator went bad and I replaced with a new alternator and new battery. Subsequently, I had an odd problem that I'm not sure is related. Everytime, I unlock with the remote I hear a dull double beep wheras normally I would hear nothing. Next when I get into the car and start it, the lock button on the console is lit in red showing the door is locked. When I try to unlock by pressing the button, the light blinks and I hear the dull double beep (sounds like from the horn), but the lock switch still has the red light showing the door is locked. If I open the doors via the door handles they open. The final quirk, the passenger side window was not dropping the 1/2 inch or so down as it should have when opened. The driver window worked just fine. Now for the strange part, I drove the car all day yesterday and I observed all this up till about 6pm. Then strangely after I was heading home after dinner, everything seemed to go back to normal - no double beep on opening the car and the lock switch and passenger window worked fine. Any ideas what was/is going on?

I think the car will double beep if any door that locks is not locked. This includes the trunk and luggage lid. Did you open the front or rear that day? I don't think the car actually locks when it double beeps....but you should check your manual...that should clear things up....hopefully. Not sure on that... Also....if you close the door and lock twice with the remote....the car may double beep or single beep...not sure, but that indicates the motion detector on the alarm system is disabled....(for pets). J
