He also noted that the heaviest oil you can get "naturally" without adding thickeners (which are non-lubricating "solids") is 40wt.

In a recent presentation by a Shell Oil representative, he noted that thinner oils circulate better and lubricate better.

Somehow I think that storing up for my next 25 oil changes may be overkill just a little bit

If it is pickup only for the group buy the West Coast guys can change the oil at your place when they get there then do another change when they get back

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

you can get it at autozone...or most car parts places. I've had trouble finding it at walmart and other places like that. If someone else knows where to get the stuff larger containers...I'd love to know as well. I can get the castrol for the 85 in larger containers.

However, I found that while I could buy Mobil 1 0w-40 from him, it only came in 6-quart cases and he required I buy by the case (though I think once or twice he relented after I had bought some oil from him).
And I found he could not beat or even match the price I paid for the same oil at a nearby Walmart.
Since moving away from that area, I now pick the oil up a local autoparts store, Kragen, and last time even got a $1 off per quart courtesy of store manager special.
Sincerely,
Macster.
I get them from Kragen, and often they have the $1 off special and I just stock up at the time. I love it so much that I am even using 0w40 in my Range Rover. Much smoother running engine when cold!
I have read your opinions in the many degenerated threads you have created. I have no issue with you personally but the non-debate comment was directed squarely in your general direction. Please do not post again on this thread.
Thanks
Bill
To the other comments thanks for the options! I have looked at three different Walmarts and the ones around here do not stock them.
1999 is a valuble contributor. Besides, motor oil is a topic we have a lot of fun with.
I got 0W40 at a local autoparts store, but the price sucked. I will be looking at WalMart, although they are out of stock around here.
IMHO These motor oil posts are kind of pointless, Mobil 1 is Staple at most auto parts stores, wal-marts, sams clubs, costo's, etc, If I find Mobil 1 0w-40 in my neighborhood Pep-Boys, how is that going to help any of you guys?? Price is usually within $1-$2 qt at any of the above mentioned stores.
Best bet is to get the phone book out and make a few calls to see who has it in stock.
I am happy to post away and help anyone out there, but this one topic seems like a waste of time,
especially when the post degenerates into BS as is happening here rather quickly.
I enjoy posting and reading posts, and I have learned a lot about my car in these forums, and have posted a couple of items that I hope helped others in the rennlist community. JMO that this particular post is worthless.
might be available in 5 or 55 gallon pails. I don't think its available in gallons in the less common viscositys like 0w40. I deal with a Mobil industrial lubricant wholesaler at work for the heavy machinery gear oils we purchase. I will call and get pricing for the bulk contailers of Mobil 1 in case anyone is interested in really stocking up and post my findings.
sorry if I came off the wrong way, it's been a long day.
Blows my mind that this topic gets so heated. Seems to me the guy asked a straight up "where to buy" question, and I think it was legitimate to tell the forum he wasn't interested in changing his mind about the type of oil he prefers.
Geez, if you're going to pick a cause to crusade for, I'm sure there must be a disease or two that are more worthy of your time than oil viscosity.

Da$$, that's my problem!!! I have been looking for the 0W-40 in the spring water isle. After all it is a water based oil, isn't it?
BTW, in the past I bought 0w-40 at my local Wal-Mart but they recently stopped selling it. They still sell Mobil 1 in other viscosities but dropped the 0w-40. I guess I will have to pay the extra mark-up at Autozone.
Thanks to everyone with worthwhile responses. Have received some good information on where to obtain locally as Wallmart no longer carries it so other options are unfortunately necesary . I do all my own oil changes in all my cars which was part of the justification for the lift to the wife
As to the post style on this thread - I do like the banter and it is part of the fun and culture of the board. Just wanted to avoid this particular back and forth because personally it is pointless to rehash that oil issue time and time again. When I did a search could not find this particular answer after reviewing about 50 threads, so felt it was okay to ask the question. The wealth of information here is fantastic and I really appreciate the like-minded DIY and track-oriented corps.
Wholesale price on Mobil 1 - 0W-40 supersyn:
Available in 6qt cases in retail packaging @ $32.99cs ($5.50qt) or 55 Gallon Drums - $1119.25 ($20.35 gal), Distributor told me this product is not packaged in Gallons or 5 gallon pails by Mobil.
How about a group buy, I'll buy a 55gal drum and pack it up in Mayonaise jars
Are those clean mayo jars? What is the effect of Miracle Spread versus Hellmans Real Mayo remnants on viscosity? If it is pickup only for the group buy the West Coast guys can change the oil at your place when they get there then do another change when they get back
I am gonna get a hold of the local distributor and get at least 3 cases for the next two oil changes.

Don't quote me on this but I believe if you mix 0w-40 with Hellmans you get 15w-50.
It is really just simple chemistry:
(4 parts 0w-40) + (1 part Hellmans) = 15w-50
Plus, Hellmans is definitely available at Wal-Mart.
Update! Got 0W-40 at Advanced Auto Parts for $4.98 a quart. Bought those three cases I was talking about. All Mobil 1 viscosities on sale to make everyone happy. They also had marshmallow fluff on sale as a thickening agent to bring it up to 40w-160, but I passed.
We buy in 55 drums and it is also available in bulk (by the truck load - pumped into your mega-gallon tank). If you have the space to store it you can save a good bit by buying in bulk. We often get two 55's at a time.
Nice work George...thanks...interesting figures. 993....great find at advanced. thanks for the tip.
Anyhow...with all this banter...I'm really confused.....
do I really need to use synthetic? I've been using midas dyno oil....no good? lol

I always find it interesting when average guys know better than factory engineers who actually test oils and their jobs depend on their conclusions.
In a recent presentation by a Shell Oil representative, he noted that thinner oils circulate better and lubricate better. He also noted that the heaviest oil you can get "naturally" without adding thickeners (which are non-lubricating "solids") is 40wt. So, according to him, 10w40 (in a mineral oil) has more lubrication that 15w50 (because the 50 weight oils have had extra materials added that only thicken--they don't lubricate).
As long as a thinner oil is consistent with manufacturer recommendations, use it -- unless your engine is so old/tired that it runs out. Then only just use slightly thicker oil to reduce consumption. But starting with thicker oils will only require their use sooner. If your engine is broken in and tight enough, synthetics can add extra protection. In an older engine, changing an oil more often is better than using a synthetic and leaving it in the engine longer. But for late model Porsche engines, use what they recommend. Guys who tell you are an idiot for following the manufacturer don't have to pay for your repairs or engine wear later.
Are we still talking about the big $1 savings for oil? So you drive a 911, change your oil every 5k miles and get worried about $10 more or less for an oil change? I don't get the point, sorry. It's like the carzy Germans that drive their S-class to Aldi 'cause the liter milk cost 5 cents less there.
No need to duck. Every little bit counts. I enjoy the hobby in many ways including working on the cars myself. Do I "need" to save $10 after already saving $200 or more for the dealer cost? Not really. Does it help justify to the CFO that this hobby makes sense on some level? Definitely
