Suggestion

I'd expect to pay $1200 for a decent paint job on the hood - they should blend the paint over the wings in order to fade-in the new paint and avoid any obvious color change between the old and new paint.

Suggestion

If you want the bumper done, then bear in mind that this uses a different paint than the hood - one that contains flex agents to prevent it from cracking on the flexible 'plastic' bumper skin.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

After three years as my daily driver, stones have taken a real toll on my hood. My question is how much will this typically cost to get it done right, and would you get the front bumper done as well at the same time? I have a Guards Red coupe. Thanks

POST 2Original post

I'd expect to pay $1200 for a decent paint job on the hood - they should blend the paint over the wings in order to fade-in the new paint and avoid any obvious color change between the old and new paint. If you want the bumper done, then bear in mind that this uses a different paint than the hood - one that contains flex agents to prevent it from cracking on the flexible 'plastic' bumper skin. So you're going to up the price considerably with a bumper re-spray as they'll mix up a separate batch of paint just for that, and have to mask it separately from the hood re-spray.

POST 3Original post

Mine was done at an auto detailer shop that regularly does high end cars. I think that it is probably sensible not to go to a regular auto body paint shop but to someone that really takes care and time to do it absolutely right. In my case, they removed the front bumper and the hood and painted it off the car to get complete coverage. There was no problem with color matching the rest of the front end in my case. Looking to get my hood painted, any tips? Is that a euphemism? If so I would like to get my hood painted too.

That's a gutsy call - Reds tend to fade over time and matching can be an issue. Of course, a good spray guy can match the color what ever it is, but seeing as on Guards Red the bumper is already a different shade from the body, which Red do you choose? LOL

POST 6Original post

Here's my GR 986 - note the bumper color is clearly different to the hood, and it's all original factory paint. Also note, this car's hood is peppered in stone chips as well, as it's a daily driver - having a decent polish and shine tends to hide the issues though - this is a '99 with over 80,000 Miles

Actually, due to the rigidity of the bumper, flex agent is not required. I found this out when my Father painted mine. I thought the same.

POST 8Original post

Quotes source post: 4590353

Really! I know a body shop will use the flex agents as it's insurance against future issues. It's also standard for the factory finish. You'll note that the paint on the bumpers responds differently to rock chips as well, tends not to 'chip' as deeply.

POST 9Original post

Quotes source post: 4590416

Oh, I agree on the rock chipping. I would of for sure got the flex agent if I knew the factory used it.

POST 10Original post

If you do get it painted make sure they do NOT remove, discard, destroy, etc., the delivery sticker under the hood!

POST 11Original post

Quotes source post: 4591255

Yup, car will be worthless without it.

POST 12Original post

I also advise on taking pictures so in case you plan on selling it, the next buyer wont question if it has been hit.

POST 13Original post

Repainted bumpers do tend to chip more easily as others have stated. I'd suggest putting on Stonegard protection a couple of months after the paint dries to avoid this. I repainted the air dam on a BMW I owned a few years back and the Stongard was a great solution.
