Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.

I'll be putting it up on stands this weekend for exhaust work, so going to do a short run through and check all the basics.
Leading evidence: 'Check basics' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check basics' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.

Suggestion
In my experience you may only be replacing silly parts like old plastic tubes, rubber hoses (items that have gotten brittle over 16 years).

typically a 996 that has been driven on more of a daily basis seems to run healthier than a 16 year old car with only 32,000 miles on it.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I usually live over on the 964 forum but I am looking at an '01 996 C2 manual with 32k miles.
I am fully up to speed on IMS/RMS, but are there any other issues or "watch outs" I should look for on a car with mileage this low?
Thanks!
Kyle
I recently picked up a 2000 with 23k miles, so far I've put about 2k miles on with no issues. I'll be putting it up on stands this weekend for exhaust work, so going to do a short run through and check all the basics.
I've heard of lower mileage being more prone to IMSB issues, but it's all speculation and there really isn't anything definitively pointing it to be a root cause.
Does the car have a Carfax? How many owners?

Its not just the mileage but also how long it sat between being driven. That averages out to 166 miles a month or 5.5 miles a day. If this was its regular routine that would be better than if it was only driven one or two weekends for longer trips and then put away for long rests. The rubber, gaskets, seals, lubrication in wheel bearings, belts, (as well as the already mentioned plastic stuff) all gets dry and brittle with non-use. Then if it suddenly gets a lot of use, failures from fatigue are very probable. You could call it the Goldilocks syndrome...too little, too much...just right. PPI becomes very important.
I'm a new owner as of a few days ago, google these for more details but here is what I know:
- second gear synchromesh wear
- cracked cylinder heads, causes coolant/oil mix
- ovalized cylinders
- D chunk cylinder wall fails
- timing chain stretch/snap
- timing chain tensioner pad wear
- IMS bearing fails
- IMS shaft pressfit sprocket slip fails
- conrod bolt failures
- RMS leaks
- cam cover oil leaks
- oil separator fails
- oil cooler fails
I think that's it. You can research these in more detail
Thanks for all the helpful feedback! I went to see the car in question and it was "out for service" when I arrived at the used car dealership. Not a good sign. I'm sure they bought it at auction and have zero history for it. Carfax does show it to be a 1 owner car with no title issues.
I would like to get a daily driver 996 or 997 and keep the 964 for weekends but I think I will hold off until my wife's vehicle is paid off in about 2.5 years. I will bookmark this thread so I have the suggestions above when I continue the search.
Replacement keys are expensive, about $500 I have been told. Most dealers that buy cars at auction only have one. My car came with three, two with the large fob and one valet key with the smaller solid fob.
i showed up to see a car a few months ago at the dealership. first they said the same thing..was out of service. then the guy came out and admitted they would never sell the car. was the porsche dealership in nashville
Same with my Mercedes Keyless Go fob, dealer wanted $525 for an extra spare one. They have to program it and have my car in service for a few hours to do. Outrageous just for another set of key!
