Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

The rotor hats are pretty rusty, do I need to use a wirebrush or can I use a chemical rust remover?
Leading evidence: 'Use chemical rust remover' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean wheels' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
Akebono pads are silent and produce no dust saving a lot of time cleaning wheels.

I did sand off any surface rust and clean with brake cleaner before painting.

For the discs, they need to be replaced anyway, but wondering if I should have them treated or coated or painted.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Mine are starting to rust, along with the wheel lug bolts, so Im looking to replace or re-paint them. For the lugs, I might go titanium. For the discs, they need to be replaced anyway, but wondering if I should have them treated or coated or painted. Obviously with high temp materials.
Not mine, but mine are starting to rust
If I buy rotors that aren't coated right out of the box, I paint them with high temp caliper paint. I don't paint the part of the rotor that mates to the back of the wheel though.
I've painted the brake hubs on many of my vehicles. Wire brush the area you want to paint, blow off the dust, then tape off the rotor and caliper, drape an old towel on the suspension and give it a couple light coats.
On the front of the hub where the wheel attaches, I recommend only giving it a light dusting of paint, if any at all. Otherwise, you'll have a hell of a time removing your wheels the next time they need to come off.
I painted mine last winter while still mounted to the car. I just taped off the area where the brake pad contacts and avoided the area where the wheel mounts. I used high-temp aluminum color rattle can paint and it turned out great. I did sand off any surface rust and clean with brake cleaner before painting.
Zimmerman coated rotors (gray), sprayed with brake cleaner, tape off most of rotor surface, then spray paint vanes and hub with high temp silver. After a few brake applications overspray on rotor gone and looks great. Two years later only rust is in cooling holes, should have used a q-tip and painted those also. I wonder what is drawback to Pagids as they are half the price of Zims.
Looks like PelicanParts is selling the coated Zimmermanns for $132 versus $61 for the Pagid discs. Is it just me or are these rotors not very expensive on the 996? Porsche brand rotors are about $180.
Pagid rotors seem very reasonably priced (on Pelican at least). Just acquired a 996 with 135k on the chassis, unknown on the brakes. Will tear into it this weekend, anyone know the correct safe thickness of the rotors? The rotor hats are pretty rusty, do I need to use a wirebrush or can I use a chemical rust remover?
Stud conversion recommendations? Thanks!
Timely post, as my left rear wheel has a scrubbing/rubbing sound. I think Im going to replace all the rotors and pads here quite soon.
Im going with Zimmerman coated rotors, but does anyone have a pad recommendation? I dont want any pad screeching noise, but otherwise am open to any pad thats good for the street or occasional track day (although I used to just buy separate pads for tracking).
I'm in a similar boat with a possible track day coming up and will just buy dedicated track day pads since swapping them is pretty easy and current street pads are still good. I'm going to look at FCP as they offer lifetime warranty - can't beat that!
I've been using Hawk carbon ceramic pads for several years. Great stopping ability, great wear, no squeak and no brake dust. Can't speak for track days, but these pads are very easy to swap out if you need track pads.
Akebono pads are silent and produce no dust saving a lot of time cleaning wheels. They dont seem to have a lot of friction so maybe stopping distance increased? And we don't race so I don't know about fade.
