taped it in place and then used the holes in the lip for drilling into the bumper cover (for the plastic rivets).

My suggestion to a number of these aftermarket manufacturers is that it certainly would make sense to manufacture a replaceable bolt on solution for all of the carerra owners that don't want to replace the entire front bumper.

These guys are all about really leveraging aero grip and from what they showed me...there are 3 seconds to be had on a 2 minute lap - no other changes with their full aero package...granted, thats not on a 996 but I think gives you an idea of the magnitude.

Does anyone have suggestions on what/how they added a front spoiler lip or splitter to a stock oem Carrera 2 bumper?
I have a 2002 C2 that I track as well as drive around town and am looking for ideas for my stock bumper before I go thru the exercise of replacing the bumper with a GT3 bumper or aerokit bumper. I have the mechanical grip with all of the suspension modifications I have done thru the years. Just looking for some aero downforce on the front end.
It seems that the GT3 lip and aerokit lip doesn't fit due to shape and stiffness. Talked to SunCoast, Demon, Getty, GT Racing and a few others about their lips and they all were honest and straightforward which I appreciated. But no cigar.
Certainly somewhere in the world, someone has manufactured a lip or splitter that would be able to be bolted onto a stock Carrera 2 bumper that would fit, look good aesthetically and work?
My suggestion to a number of these aftermarket manufacturers is that it certainly would make sense to manufacture a replaceable bolt on solution for all of the carerra owners that don't want to replace the entire front bumper. Certainly could be very good recurring revenue as they will break and need to be replaced.
I suspect many of you have found workarounds and fabrications. Would welcome any thoughts or suggestions. Thanks!
I have a cup spoiler that you may be able to modify to fit non gt3 bumper. Im out of town till Sunday for pics. You can search my photos to see it. Cant find it for sale in sunset Porsche site, but thats where I got it.
where are u located. It might prove to be too costly to ship....
Appreciate the response. Just sent you a private message. I understand the cup lip is a more flexible rubber but not being produced any more.
Has anyone in the forum bolted one on to their Carrera bumper?
I had the lifting up front feel at 90mph before the mod was done, but I also went with Feal coil-overs set up and have more slant set up with running 295/ 19 rear wheels and 235/18 front wheels. can't really say which made the difference
install is using two sided tape on top and screws on the bottom, I did the install on hot summer day for the lip to fit by leaving lip in the sun for few hour and be very flexible on install.
For track use, it is very strong, had a car lose a muffler in front of me on the freeway and hit the spoiler, I redid the paint myself no other damage, when I hit that muffler I thought for sure it ripped off the spoiler.
Thats good to hear on its functionality on the track and it's strength. I have the suspension lowered and set up with GT3 specs using PSS9s, tarot sway bars, etc. I have very good mechanical grip and balance. Floating is fairly minimal until about 120 and then you gotta pay attention up to 145 at Road America. Looking for just a little more front end downforce on the track. Ultimately I will put a GT3 front end on the car, and GT3 wing or ducktail. Haven't made up my mind just yet, hence looking for a bolt on front end solution.
Some people have been known to install Joe Toth dive planes on the stock bumpers for more downforce.

Thanks Prf and Zbomb.
Depending on the flexibility of the GT3 Cup spoiler, the Toth part may end up being the solution. It's looks good on Zbomb's car. My Porsche shop fabricates splitters for the track and I need to talk to them and see what can be done. I certainly want durability and downforce, but don't want my car to look like a souped up Honda civic either. hah
Its my understanding that the gt3 splitter and cup splitter is no longer available from porsche. There is a thread in the gt3 board for interest in kne of the aftermarket guys to manufacture one.
I had the GT3 TEK lip on my '99 for several years. Simple install and fit well. I removed it last year when I (finally!) found an OEM aerokit front bumper. It was a bit too aggressive-looking for me.
Ive spent too much time going back and forth on what I want to do with the front end.
The current thinking is to keep the stock bumper and canard setup and either fab myself or work with someone to make a lip/diffuser combo. I just think that is a better investment than going to a GT3 bumper because what I would really want for that does not exist either and Im left in the same position I am now, just with some of the funds blown on the bumper that could otherwise gone to diffuser development and materials.
Heres my inspiration, the below is for a cayman.
I've considered the Joe Toth 2-piece splitter.
It's a really nice looking, and functional splitter.
But because my cup spoiler scrapes some driveways(and occasionally parking stops) I REALLY like the flexibility of the cup spoiler!
If my car was track only, I'd go with Joe Toth.
BTW, There's a project going on to reproduce cup spoiler using a flexible material.
There's threads in the GT3 forum and the cup car forum.
Zbomb, Tex and Jeeper,
Appreciate the info. I am with Zbomb trying not to replace the front bumper until I have too. Rather spend the money on tires and brakes.
Going to converse with 85Euro on Sunday to check into his Cup lip and see how flexible it is.
Just talked again to Demon and passed a message onto Joe Toth about possibly manufacturing a spoiler lip for the Carrera. I suspect there are enough of us out here that are looking to keep the Carrera front bumper and looking for a spoiler lip to bolt on. I'll keep you guys posted on what I hear and find, if you guys will do the same.
I have an 04 with aero package. I had damaged my front bumper cover years ago and couldn't find a "reasonable" replacement aero bumper cover. I ended up putting on the standard bumper cover but I did buy the aero lip to install onto it. The aero lip is not as pronounced as the GT3 or the Gtek models so I'm not sure how much downforce it is adding. Install for the aero lip is with plastic rivets and two sided tape (so you would have to remove your current bumper cover and mark and drill holes in the bottom for the plastic rivets). Someday I may buy the aero bumper cover if I can find a good salvage one that is reasonably priced but I actually like the lines of the standard cover vs. the sharp lines of the aero.
OP - The cup lip from Demon is cheap and works fine on the .2 regular front cover. I modded my bumper by mock fitting the lip with car on ramps. Secure the lip so you can drill the holes. Use the regular pins for the aero lip. Trim the 1.5” or so with a Dremmel or Exacto. Use the usual 3M body tape. Took about an hour to rig up once the surfaces were cleaned up. The lip helps a slight bit for the front aero.
Thanks Hatchet,
Question when you mention "fitting the lip with car on ramps" so do you mean creating a "ramp" to fit between the lip and car or do you mean literally putting the car on a ramp?
It sounds like it's as simple as bolting the lip on and just cutting 1.5 inches to reduce the length?
I needed to put the car up in the air high enough to get room for the drill. For holding the lip on to make pilot holes, peeps have used bricks, jack stands, duct tape, etc. Cut and taper the extra plastic on the ends however you desire. Yes it was simple and and an enjoyable project.

Not modified. Glue/tape residue could be cleaned off better.
the stain/grayish area on lip I think is from soap or something? If you armor all it I think in gets darker and less noticeable. Its pretty low and out of eyeshot, but its there. Does not effect its purpose.😎
85Euro, quick question. Is it flexible rubber or hard rubber? If my car is already lowered and just working thru clearance and inevitable scraping. Thanks
It‘s kind of in the middle.
It is a little flexible, but not floppy.
If you hit a parking stop, it will most likely bend and pop back.
If it bends too much it could crack.
Im guessing its made of polyethylene. Think ice cream bucket. Its flexible and tough. Depending how you attach, I think it would pull off before it cracked. Ive rubbed my driveway approach with it a couple times. No problem.
Google Search that part number # for more info.😎
85EC... Kind of strange request... Can you make a template of the shape and mounting holes on cardboard and send to me ? You can fold the it up to fit in smallest packaging possible.
Would be a really good baseline for playing with making something.
LMK...
Yeah, if you use plastic retainers it will get pulled off first.
If you use bolts and large washers, it's going to break before being pulled off.
My first spoiler got caught on a overly steep driveway exiting a parking garage in Houston. (Stock suspension at the time)
It got pulled enough that the front plastic clips pulled out and the front of the spoiler was dragged underneath the car until I could stop at the next block.
I had just pulled out into traffic and had to drive about 100 feet to the first side street.
A large section of the middle of spoiler was missing, about 12"x2".
I was stuck there in nice-ish clothes trying to remove the rest of the spoiler so I could drive to my next client meeting.
When you're in that situation it seems like an impossible task to get the rest of the spoiler loose on the side of the road.
I'd rather the spoiler break than get caught and dragged underneath.
My spoiler also rubs on some residential & commercial driveways.
It's pretty tough, but not indestructible.
I hate those plastic plugs!
Spoiler #2:
No modification to the lip. It follows the curve of the normal bumper cover. I centered the lip on the bumper. taped it in place and then used the holes in the lip for drilling into the bumper cover (for the plastic rivets).
Has anyone taken a look at the 3 piece GT3 front spoiler from Demon/Toth? The idea makes sense on paper if a piece breaks off like Tex's situation.
85Euro, I'll P
Jason, looking forward to seeing what you come up with. I am going to take 85Euro's lip off his hands when he is ready to sell and ship. After reading Tex's message, I realize that I will probably need a few more lips since my car is already lowered and I like to use the rumble strips on the track. There is a market for a functional lip that looks good on a 996 Carerra which can be replaced easily when needed. No better guy than you to do it.

I never got your PM. Please send again with your shipping address. I can make a box and get you a shipping cost.
thanks!
NEVER MIND. I FOUND IT!😎
Jeesh Brother - No pressure there
I said it before...cause its true - my fabrication skills, well, they're not really skills at all. All half assed effort, no skill.
Aero is a tough one, only way to know you're getting it right is with lap times or likes on your pic posts and if you get it wrong it flies off your car at 125 and effs up a session, you drag it under the car on the highway... or best worst case, flies off and you don't notice til you look at your car and go "when the hell did that happen".
I really need to think about the materials, and design. I think starting from the Cup template is logical and I have some ideas that were really born from the Japanese time attack scene where crazy aero is pretty normal and that is really where I would like to end up.
I've posted it before but I think the picture below can give some context to what I mean...
A bit simpler
I had planned on using my broken Aerokit lip to make a fiberglass splitter.
All the holes are intact.
I was going to trim off the non-broken part and leave the part with the holes intact so I could use it to make the splitter.
But now that I have a spare factory cup-car splitter on the way, I may never get around to making it.
@zbomb
, Want it for the 996.2 aerokit front bumper holes?
I'll send it to you if you'll keep me in mind for a track-focused splitter if you make one.(or more)
That's a fair price for that splitter.
When the splitter wraps around the bumper cover to the wheel opening, it really enhances the side profile of the 996
I have been speaking with a vendor who will custom make splitters for your application. They are race car parts from both a function and price standpoint. If you were to run their splitter, it would best be paired with a GT wing on the back for balance.
He sent me some pictures of their work in our discussion to help guide through some of what they can do. Mounting would require some fab work and unless you sent them your car or were in CA, that would be up to you.
@zbomb
now that you have a data logger, have you thought about installing ride height sensors? With those, you'll be able to test aero parts and know for sure what is and isn't working.

Jason, this is an interesting option. I keep wrestling with clearance. My car is already lowered with the coilovers, so I have very little room to begin with. Very interested in what you come up with. I may just use the canards coupled with the GT3 splitter and be done with it.
I could run linear potentiometers on the dampers... There are a number of sensors I want to add - they are pretty far down on the list. I feel for my needs, lateral G, and corner speeds can give me a picture. Understeer can be looked at by looking at lateral G Vs. steering angle to an extent as well. So, I think for the relatively low level aero we're talking... that should do. Now, If later on - I have a lot more power and am seeking to eek out every bit of performance (time attack Nat level dream), and get some experience in understanding what they data is trying to tell me - I have the system that will allow me to grow into that as budget allows.
Nothing wrong with that Glenn - the options I'm showing are kind of for the guy that needs it to an extent. I'm not really sure I do - but I know the direction I want to take the car and I think that the aero aspect is way underdeveloped - so I'm throwing it out there. These guys are all about really leveraging aero grip and from what they showed me...there are 3 seconds to be had on a 2 minute lap - no other changes with their full aero package...granted, thats not on a 996 but I think gives you an idea of the magnitude.
One thing to remember with splitters... You have the Cup style, meant for wheel to wheel racing that to a certain extent are meant to be disposable. Their impact is not huge - but either is their cost. Then you have the kind like I posted, meant more for a time attack where the risk of damage is limited to a shunt really - so they can be designed to be more elaborate, more effective....and more expensive.
I’ve been eyeing Joe Toth dive planes.
I may add them to my car if my new wing adds a bunch more downforce.
I hope to have the new wing painted and mounted in a couple of weeks.
Right now with the Taco wing and the Cup car front splitter, my car feels great at high speeds.
Worried the front might feel too light without more downforce up front.
I don't think its possible to have too much downforce in the front Tex... With the mechanical grip in the front being so outmatched by the rear... The more grip, either mechanical or aero you can get on the front the more likely you can work out some of the inherent push the car has when getting on the throttle early.
At least thats how it works in my head
If you look at Cup car progression - every generations front tire sizes grow wider while the rears stay pretty much static... trying to get the most mechanical grip they can.
ETA... Wait...new wing - tell me about this development
My new(to me) wing, which should head to the body shop next week.
They’re currently busy repairing lots of hail damaged vehicles.
It’s silver instead of seal gray, and I’m having the hood pin holes filled.
Also having the scoop painted seal gray.
I’m amazed at how much lighter it is than my Taco spoiler.
The GT3RS style wing and end plates will remain exposed carbon fiber.
For those wondering... the GT3 splitter
thechunknorris
sent me looks like it will work great on my standard Carrera .2 bumper. I got it where I wanted, drilled the mounting holes and used M6 hardware to attach. Will have more details in my thread but wanted to get the info in here.
DemonSpeed is manufacturing the Cup lips now that the factory isn’t. So between the Aerokit, GT3 and the Cup lips (all three fitting the stock or aero bumper with a little trim or drill here/there), we have a nice assortment of choices for those of driving the car over “traffic calming” road obstacles. TexSquirrel - When ya gonna snap a pic with the new wing, eh?
Still waiting for my body shop to catch up on hail damage backlog so they can paint it.
They told me on Thursday that they might be ready on Monday.
I cant wait to install it.
Ill definitely post some pics as soon as I get it.
I also ordered some Joe Toth carbon fiber 996 GT3 dive planes.
Looking forward to receiving and installing them too.
It was super easy Glenn... now that I know I can get a lip/splitter for a GT3 bumper to work... it opens up some more possibilities.
Gotta shout out Joel (Chunk) for sending it my way.
Thanks Joel !
