Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

In an instance where the buyer and seller do not meet face to face, how did you handle the transaction? From what Ive read, wire transfer seems to be preferred. How did you handle the title transfer?
thanks in advance
1. Fly to seller's location with a certified check
2. Inspect / drive
3. Pay the seller and take car to shipper, or politely back out of deal
4. Hit a bar in the airport to toast to your new vehicle, or the nightmare scenario you just avoided
This works for me (and pessimist wife lol). YMMV
I used escrow.com. I wired the money to escrow.com. Escrow.com told the seller that the money is available. The seller fedexed the title to Escrow.com. Escrow.com sent me a scanned copy. I arranged shipping the car. When I got the car I had 48 hours to accept the car or ship it back (at my expense). I accepted the car, Escrow.com wired the money to the seller and fedexed me the title.
I would have done a fly-and-drive like all my other out of state purchases if it had not been the depths of the virus problem.
I bought mine through eBay Motors. The seller shipped the title over via Priority Mail. I transferred the money via wire transfer. I bought the car sight unseen. I don't recommend doing this if you don't wrench on your own car.
I sold out of state to a buyer sight unseen. Deal was struck via carsandbids.com, I sent the buyer a bill of sale via an electronic signature system like DocuSign. Offered either a wire transfer or a cashier's check. Once I had funds I mailed extra keys, service docs, and title to the buyer. Shipper picked up the car a few days later.
I wouldn't buy sight unseen like the buyer did... But that seems to be pretty common now.
If the buyer chooses not to do PPI, the buyer is buying as represented.
Period.
I have bought several cars sight unseen. It was my responsibility to do my due diligence with PPI and requesting documentation that I saw relevant.
Personally, my car will not leave my garage without full payment in my account.
Certified Check, FedEx overnight.
You FedEx overnight title once payment has been received.
You should make yourself available for any reasonable requested inspections.
Also, be accommodating when transport arrives.
Both of these Porsches below in my signature were bought sight unseen.
But I request from sellers a lot of information, pictures, videos and do my own investigation into history.
Just my $.02
Most buyers use escrow and schedule a carrier for p/up.
We have instances where the buyer would like to present upon loading the vehicle once deal has commenced.
Sometimes it works out and sometimes it does not due to variables in timing, plan on a hotel, cocktails for sure!
I purchased my car last year during peak covid times from a gentleman located in Pittsburgh and I live in northern NJ.
I had him send me a time stamped walk around video of a cold start and the car running on top of great back/forth communication via text and email. I also found a local garage (thanks to these forums) and he agreed to bring it there to get a PPI done. Also note, it was a garage that he never brought his car to previously. I received all paperwork from the PPI and a clean bill of health. From there, I had him send me the title and once I had it in hand, I sent him a check overnight. Had the car shipped and it arrived about a week later.
There was a very high level of trust with this transaction, but thankfully it all went smoothly and I love my new daily!
Most?
Can you narrow that down, since you are in the business?
Is it 60% or 65% use escrow?
That means the seller is giving a buyer the opportunity to ship and return ship a car, along with a predetermined amount of time for Inspection?
I guess I am surprised, at the cost of shipping and then return shipping, that anyone would choose this option instead of a more rigorous pre-purchase option.
If you can please share the information.
Thanks
Bought my 2004 996 C4S Cab sight unseen from Nohr's Auto Brokers in Walnut Creek, CA. I live in Westport, CT. The car was PPI'd at SS Motorsports and SS did the IMS and RMS. I wired Nohr's the money, and they shipped the car. The title arrived via FedEx overnight along with the bill of sale. Don't have them put the title in the car. It is very important that you have the title mailed via FedEx/UPS/USPS in a way that can be tracked. You do not want to be losing it. Have them leave the plates on if possible with the express agreement that you will dispose of the plates as soon as you've received your new in-state ones - that way, you don't have to stress about driving around with no plates while you wait to get your temporary tags.
Saw the car, got $500 extra from seller because he was paying half shipping. Drove it home, Italian tune up at 3,4 am in the morning, Techron in fuel tank, got rid of bad fuel, no more moisture in oil cap. Got to know car real well. Spent a total of $300 driving the car home including the cost of one way plane ticket, almost 1,300 miles, the seats on my 996 are real comfortable I weight 250 lbs. Im registering my car on Tuesday, due to COVID appointments only.
Have bought half a dozen sight unseen.
One from a dealer which wasn't as much of a worry once the PPI came back clear.
It's a much bigger leap of faith if it's a private party. I would not proceed if there were any doubts about the seller or I couldn't verify who they were beyond a reasonable doubt; I always investigate the person to my satisfaction to confirm everything is legit.
Then it's FedEx a bank check, seller immediately returns the title. Coordinate shipping. Hope for the best.
Overall no surprises yet, everything has been better than described. That's not to say it's without risk and due diligence is a must.
In the late 80s I sold a very nice 356 Hardtop to a guy I never met in person from London. ( a former tenant's cousin) He didn't negotiate on price but I insisted on cash, wire transfer or certified bank check and funds that must clear before I provide title. He gave me half in US dollars and balance checks from a bank in London. It took a couple of weeks to clear and then I allowed him to pickup.
He bought 4 other high end cars like Ferraris and Lamborghinis with checks here in VA. They were on a boat headed to England before the checks started bouncing!
I got lucky and desperately needed to money for my house renovation business. Not sure how it ended up for other sellers. By the way I heard he blew up the 356 engine driving in London!
A little justice or karma! Be careful.
Another good safety measure for in-person private-party sales is to insist on exchanging payment and signing title inside a bank under the cameras. A scam artist would never agree to this, walk away if they balk.
this was several years ago
found my car advertised in PCA magazine - car was located in Oklahoma, I'm in Vegas
email exchanges on price
had him send car to a local mechanic for PPI (found mechanic via PCA contacts)
agreed on price, I wired money, he overnighted the title to me that same day
transporter picked up the car 1 week later, I had the car a week after that
not sure I would have been comfortable wiring the money if it hadn't been for the PCA connections.
@pcarfan944
this is what i have attempted in the past but have always felt that until they retyurn the title ... you are exposed. If no title returns and you have sent a cashiers check... you are literally on your own.
