Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

2 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

2 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

The shop fixed things and it worked when I picked up the car, but the next day...I go to lower the convertible top (which requires that the windows first automatically lower), and nothing happens.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi...I wanted to ask if anyone can help with diagnosing a problem I'm having: The rear/triangular window regulator on my 2002 911 went bad (broken cable), and instead of spending $700 on a new regulator, I found a replacement cable online for much less. The shop fixed things and it worked when I picked up the car, but the next day...I go to lower the convertible top (which requires that the windows first automatically lower), and nothing happens. No noise, no motors whirring, just silence. So I try just lowering the rear window that had been fixed, and it starts to lower...then I hear what sounds like a thin glass shatter...and then can hear what certainly sounded like the cable spinning around freely inside the regulator, and the window is stuck halfway down. Any ideas? I mean...the replacement cable is just a metal cable, so I can't imagine it somehow broke in one day. It also seemed odd there was no noise whatsoever when I tried to put the top down: The first thing that happens is that the windows go down...so since nothing happened, it seems like maybe something was preventing the window from moving (and thus stalling everything). Is there some other mistake that could have been made repairing this, or any other known issues with these regulators that we should look for? Thanks so much

Only idea I have is the shop didn't fix things. The cable may not have been the only problem. When I had the regulators replaced (at separate times) in my 2002 Boxster the cables were intact but the mechanism was just worn out. The entire regulator was replaced. Window operation has been fine ever since. Take the car back to the shop and let the shop know what happened.
