Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

My VIN was included so I concluded that my engine was replaced due to an IMS failure at just shy of 25k miles.
Leading evidence: 'Replace vin was included so i concluded' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check point' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

You still want to have the bores scoped, too and bottom, to check for scoring.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello,
Looking to buy my first Porsche. Found a 996 Carrera with 41k miles.
The Carfax shows the engine being replaced in the first year of ownership. That seemsbad. Is it? Should I stay away from this?
I definitely plan on getting a PPI but trying to figure out if its even worth doing that or if I should pass. Thanks for your help.
Not really bad, no. Better that the new engine works and the old one didnt. This happens, across all Porsche models on occasion. Chances are, the new engine has updates the okd one didnt have.
You still want to have the bores scoped, too and bottom, to check for scoring. And cam deviation checks, along with the other usual PPI items.
This was during the 6204 bearing failure days. Looks like catastrophic engine failure right outta the gates, but we don't know why and that doesn't mean the car is bad.
However, if the original IMS bearing hasn't been changed, then I would definitely put that on the list. Also, make sure the shop inspects the cylinder bores for scoring.
That could have been due to the IMSB issue. The report just shows "Service Facility" was it at the Volkswagen dealer? If a factory engine not a bad thing, but... Do some reading about IMSB failures to educate yourself.
I had the same marker on my CarFax when I purchased my car. You can go down the rabbit hole of searching what VIN numbers were covered by the lawsuit that took place a while back to cover the IMS failures. My VIN was included so I concluded that my engine was replaced due to an IMS failure at just shy of 25k miles. You can also look at the engine serial number to find out what engine went back in but that information is not always correct or accurate. AT would signify a remanufactured engine. My car had the X51 engine and while all visual signs point to having an X51 in there now as well as the correct ECU, the engine SN does not confirm this. Doesn't bother me one bit. I wouldn't worry about it, especially if this was done at a Porsche dealer. I'd still go through all the suggested PPI check point.
