I was quoted 2k to have my AOS replaced by Junipero Porsche and Mercedes.
Leading evidence: 'Replace by junipero porsche and mercedes' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). If anyone is up for DIY-ing this, I recently replaced my AOS with UAOS and wrote a step by step DIY with photos.

How much does it cost to replace the AOS and whatever associated parts that normally get replaced?
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I know there are a lot of old threads on this but I found very little recent information. How much does it cost to replace the AOS and whatever associated parts that normally get replaced? I recently had my IMS, clutch, RMS water pump and low temp thermostat replaced to the tune of $4500 at an Indy shop. I asked about the cost of doing the AOS at the same time and was quoted an additional $1k. Since it was working fine I decided to wait.
AOS replacement is quite an intense big job. I haven't done it myself but it is quite involved.
Basically the intake on bank 1 (1-3) needs to be removed and the engine slightly lowered before you can get to the AOS.
Others should be able to let you know a more accurate cost.
JHall, I would say if you have a garage and a box of tools and some jack stands a jack and inclined to doing some wrench turning the price will be drastically lower than taking it to the Indy. I think the $1K is about the going price at least from one mechanic last year in the Southern California area for the AOS job.
It cost me the price of the part and all attaching hardware but that was because I actually do all my own repairs. Dan-189 was correct, the easy way to do this with the engine in is to remove the intake manifold, remove the left rear tire, lower the motor a tad and then remove the two attaching bolts (10mm), the accordion tube on lower part of the AOS the two clamps holding it and then two clip in hard plastic lines and two small rubber hoses. Space in that area is tight due to the various other plugs and wiring harnesses. Anyhow for the $1K you could buy a decent toolbox, the replacement AOS and associated clamps, hoses and bolts, a jack, a pair of jack stands and a ATV jack to lift and lower the motor for less than the cost of the Indy repair.
I don't understand why they would charge you $1000 for an AOS replacement when you already have the tranny out and everything and the AOS part only cost around $100?
I agree with you guys but what I am asking is what it costs currently to go to an indy and get an AOS replacement with no other work. Surely someone has had an AOS replaced.
I own a few Mercedes and haven't once (knock on wood) needed an Indy because they are so reliable and durable. Why can't Porsche be as reliable? I'm still searching for the right 996 and it's a good thing there are quite a few Indy specifically for Porsche where I live.
Had this done at an indy in late March - though my AOS went out, there was a broken coolant connector and I needed a little additional work needed to be done to clean out plenums, oil change, etc. Labor ($828) + parts ($607) + Supplies ($43) = $1544. Here's the tab:
Labor:
AOS INSPECTION $80.33
AIR OIL SEPARATOR $669.45
PORSCHE ENGINE OIL SERVICE $78.40
Parts
Oil Separator $246.13
Coolant/Antifreeze $97.76
Cooling Hose Connector $9.13
Intake Manifold Gasket 32.49
Clamp $3.42
Oil Filler Tube Seal $4.72
Oil filler tube $84.56
Oil $128.90
Just had mine done at my indy shop. $1200 total in northern California (bay area). Like Andrewck, there were a couple of bits and bobbles that were replaced as well.

I know this is an old thread on an old subject. Replacing the AOS with the engine in the car was one of the most frustrating, complex, difficult, PITA jobs I have ever encountered. Having now done it once, and I have stated this elsewhere in other threads, I would gladly pay $2K to have someone else do this replacement. Even if they said "we'll just drop the engine". My response would be just have at it. If you have never done it in your garage, with your hand tools and jack stands, getting that last intake manifold bolt out, shredding your left arm, then just pay whatever cost they quote you and move on.
Having my engine dropped by indy next week to install Skip's UAOS, new injectors, new coil packs/plugs....also installing a 997 GT3 shifter and some body trim. Will report back on labor costs, I purchased all the parts.
