Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Reported cause
The problem is the US standard suspenion has higher ride height in front, which does effect high-speed aerodynamics.
Leading evidence: 'us standard suspenion has higher ride height in front' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'us standard suspenion has higher ride height in front' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check gps later' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I didn't have time to look at the speedo but was pleasantly surprised when I checked my GPS later that day.

Suggestion
Don't remember exactly, but if anything there might have a been a little downhill earlier on in the run (not after 160ish).
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Porsche rates the top speed of an 02-04' Carrera as 177 mph, which coincidentally is redline in 6th. The 99-01' with less HP and the 02-04' C4S worse aerodynamics are both rated for 174 mph. Still I don't think I would even try to attempt it with a US standard suspension car. The problem is the US standard suspenion has higher ride height in front, which does effect high-speed aerodynamics. When my car was stock, I found my front end to get very light above 130 mph. With the ROW M030 and no aero, I've had it up to 165 and it is dead stable. Don't know about top speed as it is hard to get enough room to top it out.
OK I will answer this. Yes a 2000 C4 will pull to redline in 6th gear. I do have an Evo intake, aftermarket exhaust and a M0030 suspension on my car and have once taken it to redline in 6th gear on A7 on a Sunday morning. The indicated speed was 179MPH, actual your guess is as good as mine since I was worried about traffic and not looking at the GPS speed. Lastly yes it was legal for me to drive that fast here in Germany and it is a US spec auto.
According to my gear charts, with a 25.2 inch 285/30/18 tire you would be traveling at 186.68 mph at 7200 rpms. That seems really unlikely. Am I missing something?
Not stock, giac, evo intake, stock suspension. I didn't have time to look at the speedo but was pleasantly surprised when I checked my GPS later that day. The suspension is fine as long as you're going straight.
I've hit 160 with the top down several times so I don't see why a stock 996 wont hit 177 at 7k rpms.
No my car was not going downhill it was on a relatively straight shot on A7 near Rothenburg ob der Tauber. I looked at the speed when close to the redline and yes if you want to be technical I consider redline at 7000 rpm as the last 200 or so RPM are too difficult to see. So sorry I will stick with what I said and say that at least my 3.4 C4 CAB will pull to redline (7000 RPM) in 6th gear. Should I contact Ripley?
Cheers
One correction mine is not stock again EVO intake, aftermarket exhaust.
Don't remember exactly, but if anything there might have a been a little downhill earlier on in the run (not after 160ish). I backed off because I was pulling up on some slower traffic, but really did feel that there were a few mph left.
184 indicated, 178 GPS I thought was pretty accurate on the speedo. The car incidentally is a 2002 US Spec completely stock car .... although I've always felt it was quicker than every other carrera I've driven. No explanation for this!
Question:
How many miles does it take to reach final speed?
I want to put the car to the test and have been thinking about the areas around the state where the roads are seriously flat and where there are no people or bends in the roads. I have pushed the speed for 5th and have not gone into 6th at speed yet due to space constraints.
Do everyone a favor and by a plane ticket to Frankfurt Germany. Rent a Porsche 996/ 997 from Frankfurt Porsche for around 122 euros a day and drive east on A3 till you reach A7. On A7 head South towards A9. On a Sunday with limited trucks open up the Porsche till it tops out or you back off (note on A7). Cost will be much less than being arrested or worst case hitting some farmers kid and while you are here hit the ring and drink some real beer. Not busting your chops just think safety, capability of average American driver on the road etc... If you do it please be safe. IMHO
Hey guys, alright, no more argument etc. One guy actually TOOK A PICTURE of himself driving 170+.
I don't want to be responsible for any fatalities.
Thanks to all. Be safe.
Cheers, Andrew
