Reported cause

I've never replaced a clutch on any of the 24 cars I've owned up until this Porsche, and I'm convinced it was the previous owner's driving habits that did it.

I'll check when I get home to see what I paid here in Toronto, but I'm pretty sure it was a lot less than $2k for the clutch and RMS.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My new (to me) 2002 C4S may require a new clutch - and possible a new flywheel. Here's the situation. My driveway is really steep, so steep that I really didn't want to bring it up, but my wife insisted (Can't have the p-car left on the curb - the bad guys will get it for sure!). So, I got her to stand outside the car and watch for when I was going to scrape the front plastic piece of one of the exhaust tips, and help me get it up there . After 3 or 4 tries, we figured out how to do it at just the right angle that it would not scrape. When I finally brought it all the way up, the clutch pedal would not come all the way out when I released it. Once at the top of the driveway, I stopped the car, and the pedal came all the way out. I got out of the car, and I could smell cooked clutch - quite strong. I let it cool off, and it seemed OK. Yesterday, when I was out for a drive, I decided to give it a good launch from a standing start. I revved it up (not sure to what RPM, probably 2500 or so). When I let out the clutch (I didn't sidestep it, but it came out quicker than usual), the car moved ahead slowly, and the engine hit the rev limiter. So, of course, off the gas, and pushed the clutch back in. I then babied the car back home (and left it at the curb!!). I phoned the large indy here in Vancouver, and the service manager tells me that I have "heat cycled" the clutch, and that with 37,000 km. (close to 23,000 miles) on the car, that I should replace it soon - he says it is at least 1/2 way worn out anyway. I may need a new flywheel as well, and if I don't already need one, he says that I increase the chances of having to replace it if I don't replace the clutch. He quoted me about $2K Canadian without the flywheel, or $3K without. He'll also replace the "sweating" RMS ($37 for the seal) while he's in there. Sigh, my first maintenance expense on my first p-car. Do you think I should rush to get this done?

POST 2Original post

The service life he's saying your clutch should have is not impossible. Mine needed replacement at 76,000 km. But the price seems stiff to me. I'll check when I get home to see what I paid here in Toronto, but I'm pretty sure it was a lot less than $2k for the clutch and RMS. Should you get it done? Depends on your disposition. My clutch replacement started out as an RMS replacement (also 'sweating'). Given this was my first Porsche and it was new to me, I was kind of happy to have a mechanic get his hands in the engine, so I did it. I figured replacement was in the near future anyway, so I may as well enjoy the benefits sooner than later. Good luck.

POST 3Original post

102,000 miles on my original clutch and still going strong. Just sayin...

POST 4Original post

84,000 miles on my original clutch and last week the service manager at my Porsche dealership said it felt strong to him with no slippage. I figure I am good for another 50,000 miles or so. In all my years of Porsches, I have never had to replace a clutch with a couple of them going up to over 90,000 miles.

POST 5Original post

It's not the car, it's the driver. I've never replaced a clutch on any of the 24 cars I've owned up until this Porsche, and I'm convinced it was the previous owner's driving habits that did it.

POST 6Original post

how about a spongy clutch? I don't know if it was the heat (90F) but my clutch felt very soft. Haven't heard that squeak in a while either.

POST 7Original post

Check out Scan Automotive in North Vancouver. I got quoted ~$1900 for a clutch job which includes refacing the flywheel.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks to you all. Pobox - I keep hearing good things about Scan, I will call them for sure. The interesting thing to me is that this clutch feels really good. It has a very wide sweet spot, and other than what I described in the OP, it has been great. It doesn't feel like it it is slipping at all. The revs go up, the car goes faster. So how to explain what happened when I tried to launch it hard? I'm scared to do it again. Do Porsches launch differently than other cars? I've driven other AWD standard transmission cars with no problems.

POST 9Original post

The price you were quoted is WAY out of line for a clutch... you can get an OEM clutch from suncoast porshe for $420 USD. Also you can have the flywheel re-surfaced for about $200-300 CDN.... you don't need a new one at this point... you can always resurface a flywheel once.... in the future if you do... suncoast porsche sells them for $750 USD. (suncoast has unbelievable prices on clutch kits and flywheels...) make sure you it's an oficial porsche clutch kit and not an aftermarket kit! $1900 for clutch kit + labour + resurfacing of the flywheel is also quite steep... I would say $1400 CDN MAX for a good deal for the above job.
