Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Tech and shop owner inspected the cats, found no usual discoloration associated with bad cats, told me cats usually do not go bad at 50k miles unless something makes them go bad, like an improperly tuned engine.
Leading evidence: 'Inspect cats, found no usual discoloration associated' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Inspect cats, found no usual discoloration associated' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Looks like I have a cat going bad.
Rattling and wisping noises from one side.
Factory units about $950 per side from Sunset.
Considering sport cats if more cost effective........
Any recent experience with Fabspeed (or other) Sport Cats?
Do they now have taps for both O2 sensors?
Do they affect torque/hp/driveability/resonance?
Any CEL issues?
Thanks for any experience, input, suggestions....
I had the same rattling Cat issue and had it covered under the emissions warranty on a 5 year old car...
Regardless, I've installed Fabspeed 100 cell Cat's which do create a better sound and a bit more umph... seat of the pants, no dyno results.
However, I did get a Cat related CEL, which I was assured wouldn't happen. Have had it cleared twice, but it will likely come back. The FS Cats may be defective, or the O2 sensors may not want to play fair, not sure. I'm having the ECU flashed in a couple weeks for added performance, and hope this helps solve the problem.
In the end, I still recommend the mod. Love the sound!
You probably need to go with a 200cpi cat..100 cell count cats are notorious for this. I don't think that software is going to help this unless they delete the rear 02 sensor code. I did this for my M3 but I don't think Pcars have this capability in the aftermarket.

Kevin - take it to the dealer first. There is an extended warranty period (sorry, I can't recall the length of time) on emission control parts. The worst thing that can happen is the dealer tells you the cats are not covered, so you have nothing to lose. Warranty replacement (a.k.a. FREE) of the OEM cats sure beats the hell out of $1,800 - $2,000 out of YOUR pocket.
Hey, Tim.
Tried the dealer route.
Asked them to contact PCNA and ask for assistance.
District SM said no.
My car was put into service 11/98, so outside of 8yr emissions warranty, and they also said (as did the other dealer in Atl.), that cat replacement under warranty is for emissions reasons only. They won't replace due to only making noise. Has to be throwing the CEL for the emissions warranty to be in effect.
You guys are giving great advice but I think he's been looking for an opportunity to put the sportcats on and now he's found it. Let us know how it turns out.
Turns out cats are fine.
Took the car to a local muffler shop which builds systems for street rods, restomods, etc.
Tech and shop owner inspected the cats, found no usual discoloration associated with bad cats, told me cats usually do not go bad at 50k miles unless something makes them go bad, like an improperly tuned engine. Inspected all welds, mounting clip welds, heat shields, etc. Exhaust tip welds (which have been known to fail) all good.
So, the tech started trying to chase the rattle with his stethoscope, and decided it was definitely from the area of the passenger can.
Took the can off, shook it, found no rattles. The PSE vacuum linkage had some movement in it, so the tech tigged it and put the cans back in.
After the car heated up again, the rattle was still present; the tech again with stethoscope, traced the noise to the outer side of the can. It was interesting that when the can was hot and under pressure, the broken piece would move and flutter, but when cooler, would not rattle when shook. I suppose as the broken piece heated, it became more flexible, enough to allow the exhaust pulses to move it back and forth and against adjacent metal.
I asked if they could open up the can and cut out the offending broken weld, but they didn't think that to be feasible, so I decided to take my old 3.4 liter stock can to them and have them weld on SS bypass pipe to the 3.4 can.
The rattle is gone, but the modded 3.4 can doesn't sound identical to the 3.6 PSE can. It's more boomy and doesn't have the rasp of the 3.6 PSE can, but the rattle is gone and the car is drivable again and doesn't sound like it's falling apart at the seams.
Now I have to decide what to do as a permanent solution.
I'm thinking of maybe getting a used 3.6 stock can and modding it and see how that matches up...........
Or maybe Fabspeed Maxflos could be in my future.
I don't think I'll buy more PSE cans unless I can find one used and cheap.
FWIW, I have read of PSE cans developing internal rattles here on Rennlist.
Thanks to all for your input and suggestions regarding the sport cats!
Any and all further ideas are appreciated!
