Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Why do some of the 996's come with a three point steering wheel and some with a four point? I don't believe it is a year of manufacturing because I have seen both wheels on the same year.

POST 2Original post

For the MkI cars the 4 spoke was a carry over from the 993 (it is a 993 part) and was the standard option. The 3 spoke was an option. I don't know which was standard/option for the MkIIs. Most people like the 3s and many swap them in if their car has a 4. Personally I think the 4 looks better.

POST 3Original post

The 4-spoke was standard and 3-spoke was an option for Mk I cars. Aside from the number of spokes, the difference is that the 4-spoke airbag is vinyl and has a debossed Porsche emblem whereas the 3-spoke wheel has a leather airbag and a colored gold crest. When I ordered my car, the price for the 3-spoke option was $325.

POST 4Original post

Only a few 3-spoke steering wheels have the super rare silver horn crest. Rare like in hope diamond and sasquatch. I kid you not!

Not entirely correct. The standard may be vinyl (I honestly don't know), but there was an option for a leather 4 spoke (have it and love it). I thought the wheel was leather and the leather option just added leather on the column and the back. It's been too long though so I'm not sure.

POST 6Original post

^Close, but not quite accurate^... The emblem/crest is EMBOSSED on the 4 spoke wheel - nit picky I know, but... The 3 spoke wheel airbag came in vinyl and/or leather trim - with the leather one being quite a bit more expensive. I'm pretty sure both retail for over $2k with the leather one being closer to 3k Leather http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/1618973...&ul_noapp=true Vinyl http://www.ebay.com/itm/Porsche-986-...3D161897382521

I can never tell whether people are joking about this or not. My car has a 3-spoke leather wheel with a silver crest. No idea if that's unusual or not, but I like it since it goes better with the silver car than gold.

POST 9Original post

Quotes source post: 13993266

It looks genuine, but how do we know it's not a fake or inserted by the previous owner? Post your option tag and I'll look it up.

POST 12Original post

Quotes source post: 13993088

Does that mean a silver crest but with the red/black sections in the middle? Or is there a silver crest with no colors? Just wondering as my '02 3-spoke Tip steering wheel is the silver but with red/black inserts.

POST 13Original post

Side note - are these wheels actually worth anything? I have both a 3 spoke and a 4 spoke with airbags hanging on my garage wall. The 3 spoke wheel is in bad shape - but the airbag is near perfect. The 4 is in pretty good shape.

POST 14Original post

Quotes source post: 13993356

Sure worth something. Not so sure about the "near perfect" airbag though.....used only once? Volkert

I have the rare silver crest and I hear it's good for an additional 5 WHP over the gold crest....

I grew up driving a 1983 GTI with a fatty four spoke wheel. So I too prefer the four.

POST 17Original post

Quotes source post: 13993927

The 3 has just always looked bulky and unbalanced to me. Just a taste thing.

POST 18Original post

I think the silver crest came on the 2000 models only to celebrate the 50th (silver) anniversary of Porsche. Mine has the silver and I think the colored one would look better (I'm not changing it though) Regarding 3 spoke versus 4, it's personal preference, but I strongly prefer the 3. My first 996 had the 4-spoke and I really hated the look of that wheel.

POST 19Original post

TWO people here have the RARE and HIGHLY sought after silver steering wheel crest???? I'm going out and buying a lottery ticket, this must be some sort of sign. Maybe that $75K 996 in the other thread has one too, which explains his asking price.

POST 21Original post

Quotes source post: 13993979

You sure about that? The 50th anniversary of the Porsche company would have been 1981. Maybe you're thinking about the anniversary of the 911? But that would still be wrong because that happened in 2013. I told you the silver horn crest is as rare and mysterious as sasquatch!!!

POST 22Original post

My MY-00 also came with the silver crest on the 3-spoke steering wheel but no leather cover though. I do wish I had that leather option to complement the full interior package :-) Cheers,

I have a year 2000 and mine also has the silver crest. It was my understanding that silver was used instead of gold for the year 2000 cars...I might be incorrect...

POST 25Original post

As I was stating in my reply to iammclovin804... I too have the silver crest...

POST 26Original post

I'm feeling cheated with my lousy colored one.

POST 27Original post

Quotes source post: 13996031

What I meant to say was that it was used to celebrate the 19th year after the 50th anniversary of Porsche and also to celebrate the fact that it would only be 13 short years until the 50th anniversary of the 911. See, it all makes sense!!!! Sorry, had that confused regarding the anniversary, it was actually silver to recognize the millennium. I'm not joking about that -- I did read that somewhere (and, as we've seen, I'm never wrong ).

POST 28Original post

99' C2 Cab, OEM silver crest, beginning not to sound so rare.......

POST 29Original post

I also change my hood crest to the silver one to match my steering wheel.

POST 30Original post

I have a 2001 911, can the 3-spoke steering wheel from a 2001 Boxster fit? Is it a direct swap? Can I put the 4 spoke 996 steering wheel in the boxster and the 3-spoke from the boxster back in the 911? Is there any coding required?

POST 31Original post

Yeah, I think any 2000 996 that was ordered with the three spoke wheel had the ultra-rare silver crest. If you see the full color crest on a 2000, the air bag isn't original to the car. I thought they put the silver crest on all three spoke 996's prior to 2001, but I could be wrong. Sheesh, B3, you're even worse than Gonzo and his damn mice.

POST 33Original post

I had the stock tiptronic 4 spoke wheel didn't like it got the 3 spoke one from a boxster, direct fit and perfect size (slightly smaller than 4 spoke) really love it
