Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Suggestion
If 50% or less of the clutch plate remains, then have them replace the clutch also, because coupled with the RMS replacement, the labor for the clutch replacement will be "free."
Leading evidence: 'Replace clutch also' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace clutch also' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. Suggestion
If you have the RMS replaced, make certain that they check the clutch and let you know how much wear life it has remaining on it.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

just had the (soon to be my... (hopefully)) 996 PPI'ed by an official Porsche centre close to the Garage I'm buying it from.
had three issues:
Damaged tyre (not the end of the world)
high horn tone not working (oh well...)
slight leak from RMS
now - i've spoke to my 'tech' as i believe you guys over the pond call them, who said that
most
996s will likely have a small leak/weep from the RMS area - it can be fixed - it will come back and it's very, very unlikely to cause catastrophic failure.
He said to wait until the clutch needs doing and get it done then.
Porsche want to (in order to sell me a $1600 warrenty....
) - 'fix' the RMS problem now (with the potential of a 'goodwill' contribution from Porsche....yet to find out what this may be)
I have done my homework on RMS issues - but I think the porsche centre are after - extra work & a warranty sale for something that is highly unlikely to be an issue...in terms of a years worth of reliability.....
Please can I have your opinions?
Thanks
I agree that the leak will probably cause no real issuses. It is almost impossible for a RMS leak to get on the clutch unless it is just pouring out which would be really rare and probably indicate more than just a seal. However I had my 99 fixed under warrenty in 99 and it doesn't leak a drop since. So I don't think it will automatically come back once fixed. Others have had a different experience. You don't say how many miles are on the car or what year it is. I think I would go ahead and get it fixed if the warrenty is something you want. But I would put a new clutch disk in as well because there is no extra labor involved and the disk is only $100 or so. Then again forget the warrenty save your money and wait till you need a clutch.
just to clarify
car is an '02 targa
has 29,000 miles
I've not bought it yet - but was having a PPI with a view to sticking on the official porsche warranty (a $1600 bargain here in the UK....)
they wont warrant the car because of the RMS issue - but will happily repair it (i'm guessing $1000....), for me to buy the warranty ($1600) after the inspection ($400)....
Or i could live with the RMS issue until i need the clutch changing - but I'm mindful of not having a decent warranty if the motor goes pop.
Thanks in advance,
Timmer
Sooner or later you will have to replace the RMS. See how much of the RMS cost Porsche will "goodwill" for you. If you want a warranty (and it sounds like you do) then get the RMS replaced.
See if the Garage where you are purchasing the car will pay for all or part of the RMS replacement cost or have them lower the price of the car accordingly for the RMS, damaged tire (tyre) and faulty horn. If you work this right, you could greatly reduce your out of pocket expenses for the RMS and get the CPO waranty you desire.
If you have the RMS replaced, make certain that they check the clutch and let you know how much wear life it has remaining on it. If 50% or less of the clutch plate remains, then have them replace the clutch also, because coupled with the RMS replacement, the labor for the clutch replacement will be "free."
