Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Its a 1999 996 black with Red interior (full leather) 30K miles. 6 sped, Has Pss9 suspension, Teach art exhaust, and the front end is updated to an '02. I offered him $30,000....what do you guys think?

POST 2Original post

that he will say no, maybe $35k, that is low miles

POST 3Original post

Actually, I was thinking the opposite. '99s are ~8yrs old now, and the market reflects this and the general oversupply of used 996s, especially 3.4s. The mileage is nice, though. $30k is close, though obviously there are some different opinions on what the right price is!

POST 5Original post

Call a dealer and ask him what he would give you for it as a trade-in. Your price to your friend should be the sales tax saved plus another thousand or two. I bet the price would be less than $30,000 figured that way. KBB shows private party at $30,000 if excellent condition. So your friend is being fair with you. Just understand that the market is weak right now for '99 996's. There are some tremendous bargains out there if you go looking for them. Your friends car is not a bargain. You would be paying top dollar, but then you would get a car knowing its history. if you friend is the original owner and can tell you the whole history, your risks are lowered considerably.

POST 6Original post

I think you should follow this general rule, NEVER buy from, or sell to a friend....if you want to remain friends, in the future.

POST 7Original post

Pretty damn good deal if it all checks out. 30k is low mileage!! Why was the facelift done, though? Just as an upgrade? Or did he rear end a minivan and fix it with the newer parts?

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

he has not accepted my offer yet...the car is clean. Honestly the majic price for me would be $27k for me. I think i'm paying all the money at $30K. I'm not crazy about a buying a '99, but i like the lower milage and I love the Color combo. I either want Grey/Red or Black/ Red, How rare is the color Combo?

POST 9Original post

+100.. Unless is some kind of charity thing and your helping him out.. i wouldnt buy it.

POST 10Original post

$27k would be more reasonable. Keep in mind that 996 owners tend to think more highly of their cars than the market as a whole does. Mine was advertised at $42k when I bought it (my C2, not my Turbo). The gentleman had received several offers, but none he thought were good enough. But eventually he broke down and sold at $36k, which, though less than what he wanted, was in line with what he was being offered. I sold the car a year later (with +25k miles) on it for almost $10k less, though admittedly, I was in quite a rush. But the people posting about not buying a car from a friend have extremely valid points, as well! So I'll throw in a +1 of my own.

POST 11Original post

Nice miles, but again, I won't pay a premium for a garage queen (a well-maintained car with higher miles is worth than one that just sits atrophying, but that's my opinion). Otherwise, I think $29-30K is reasonable. Your friend is giving you a little bit of a deal for a modded car (provided those are the mods you desire) but not a huge discount, and I assume that you are getting a car with a history with which you are comfortable. I also don't have an issue with buying something from someone I know. I guess it just depends on how well you do know him.

POST 12Original post

I sold my Saleen mustang to one of my best friends about six months ago. I had extensively modified the car (over $25,000 in modifications). It is an incredible track car. It does my heart good to know that it went to someone who will appreciate it. Every time it has a problem, he calls me. I'm always happy to help him out. He also called me when he did a 12 second 1/4 mile and had it up to 175mph (with room to go). I could see how seling a car to a friend could be a problem, especially if the car has issues. If your friendship is solid (and so is the car), you won't have any problems. Be careful and good luck.

POST 13Original post

I think you have champagne taste on a beer budget. If you only have $27k for a pcar, find another car.

POST 14Original post

There are plenty of 99s selling for 27k, but not one with that low of milage. Unless its been wrecked or is in poor shape, I think around 35k is more of a fair price.

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have a budget of $40K, but in my eyes that car is worth $27K. He is a friends buddy. I would call him more of a acquaintance. Plus Ill get a PPI if he accepts....I found a 02 with similar miles that Im going to see this week as well. I rather spend 6-8 grand more and get a '02. With my experience buying a number of cars over the past couple years, there are deals out there, you just need to find it and be patient.

POST 19Original post

Anything with a red interior seems to be at least somewhat rare. I'd say that definitely less than 10% of 996s have red leather and it could be even less than 5%. What does everyone else think?

POST 20Original post

Red hurts the value. It's just a little too extreme for most. If you like it, buy it and enjoy!!

POST 21Original post

By the way, which red is it? I guess there is Boxster Red which is bright and Terracotta which is subtle... I think that the first two pictures are Boxster Red and the second two are Terracotta.

POST 22Original post

the reason why it's rare is because not a lot of people like it which narrows your buying audience if and when it comes time to sell used

POST 23Original post

I just purchased a '99 C4 Cab with 58K miles for $31K. It was in near showroom condition. That being said, the '99's that were for sale for less than $30K, with lower miles were all less than desirable - used and abused with a lot of scratches, dings in the body, etc....

POST 24Original post

Any red is quite rare to find, black and grey account for 90% of the market... I would recommend getting an 02. SO many improvements
