Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

It's probably a combination of a little rust and residual brake dust.
Leading evidence: 'combination of a little rust and residual brake dust' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'combination of a little rust and residual brake dust' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean too' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

So easy to get in there and clean too, then the effort for not afterwards.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Ok, I wash the car and the wheels. Since my wheels are an open design, I feel compelled to wash the insides too. Of course, every time I wash the wheels, I have the problem of the rotors getting rust on them.
So after I dry the car, I take the car for a 5 minute run to dry off the brakes. (I read this suggestion on Rennlist.) I get back home, and now there brown crud all over the wheel insides. It's probably a combination of a little rust and residual brake dust. So I re-clean the wheel insides again and usually touch up the outside a little too.
Anyone figured out a better solution - other than getting different wheels? (My wheels are pictured below.)
Thanks,
Charlie
I know exactly the problem. So easy to get in there and clean too, then the effort for not afterwards. Will be interested to see if there is a solution.
The color of your wheels? are they body color? or is that just the light in the pic making them look dark.

Wait until the next day and then drive it. The rust will come off the brake disks the first time you apply the brakes. However, this will now be a dry powder, rather than a brown, wet glob.
Looks very nice. Like the calibers painted to match.

Waiting a day to drive my nice shiny car.... torture, black is never clean enough for very long, grrrr. Live with it is what I'll do. Thanks.
Tim is completely correct - I was impatient yesterday, and the same thing happened to me. The rust on the rotors is very superficial and is abraded off with your first drive. The key is to wait till the wheels are completely dry, or you get the dreaded layer of spun liquified crud on the inner rims.
That's what I use. Blows out 99% of the water from the wheels, rotors and all the panel seams that seem to hold water. My neighbors think I am nuts but it gets the job done!
I already wash the wheels last so I'll give the leaf blower a try. My leaf blower is electric, ie. not that powerful. I suppose I could even try my air compressor. Just washed it yesterday so I'll wait until the next wash to try.
Thanks for all the suggestions.

My neighbors KNOW I'm nuts. I've been trying to do a complete detail of my car for the first time since I bought it (and possibly the first time ever). Wash, clay, wax, quick detail (pesky wax dust!), windows, vaccuum, armor all. I've been at it since Friday, and I might finish tomorrow. Having a 6 year old doesn't help (tons of distractions), and I am really really slow since I've never done half this stuff, but I've had several neighbors come by and ask me why I'm still working on it...
If all of us are nuts to the "outside" world, but normal here on Rennlist, and your neighbors think you are normal.... then, on Rennlist, you ARE nuts!
Man that was too easy!
Paint the inside of the wheels glossy black. It's easy to do, looks good and hides almost all of the dirt and brake dust. Then wait until the wheels dry to drive and get the light rust off. Just one more reason to get PCCBs on the next car
