When we bought our first RX the '92 Jeep Cherokee Limited got "retired" to my wife's sister's cattle and wheat ranch up in Everson (north of Denton) and has proved to be the ideal vehicle for the area.

I drove my '99 C4 Cab last winter in the Chicago area, using Pirelli snows, and I have to say it was wonderful in the snow.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My '99C2 is/was my dream car. Purchased in CA as my daily driver, specifically not the C4 because I promised if it was raining I'd take it easy. Promptly lost my job, and resettled in MT. So have driven an AWD Volvo most of the time and put 1500 miles a year on the 996 (currently has 23000 miles, and 12000 of that was in CA, so 11000 miles in 7 years). And have cursed the fact that if I had the C4, I'd have bought snows and the clear bra instead of the Volvo. Last night, the Volvo got hit by an "impaired driver". May be totalled. Will find out in the next week or so. I'm a winner in that all I have is an abrasion on my forearm from the airbag. So I get to consider the option of getting that C4/selling my C2 vs. replacing the Volvo. Costwise, I'd take the Porsche and Volvo money and get say an '03 C4S (say mid $50's). Then wheels, snows and clear bra for another $5K. Alternative is to plow the settlement into a replacement Volvo and continue with the status quo...... When I got the Volvo I liked the idea of "saving" the 996 from the elements and things worked out nicely that way. If I go with the C4 I wouldn't have that option. But I WOULD be in the Porsche daily. Not sure what I'll do this time, but thought I'd let you guys participate vicariously...

POST 2Original post

I drive a 996 C2 (with PSM) 365 days a year in rain, snow, mud, hail...whatever get's thrown at us in Canada. With the proper tires, it's unstopable...well, nearly! I proudly stand by my Pcar as the world class, all season daily driver it's built to be. Don't be affraid!

POST 3Original post

I drove my '99 C4 Cab last winter in the Chicago area, using Pirelli snows, and I have to say it was wonderful in the snow. Possibly the best winter ride I've had. Get one and drive it!! You only live once! Why save it for the next owner? You can't take it with you! I've got another couple dozen good "rationalization" thoughts if you need them....

POST 5Original post

I agree with the tires comment. When I was at the University of Denver 345 years ago, I had a 280ZX with all-weather tires. It was better in the snow than my CJ5. I can't help but think that a P-car (a proper P-car that is, with the engine out back ) will be even more better. (That's a technical term, "more better")

POST 6Original post

yea i mean it's like some of us folks make it sound like the porsche is some awesome winter ride when in fact a lot of rides can be awesome winter condition cars with the right equipment namely tires. i bet you the ferrari F430 could be a very solid winter vehicle... with the right tires. but i'd never want to drive the 911 in the winter because... 1) low clearance; 2) it's small; 3) it's a friggin' sports car so why use it as a beater kinda thing. what a waste.

POST 7Original post

Having lived in Lewistown for a few years back in the mid-sixties the ONLY Porsche I would suggest for your area would be the Cayenne. When we bought our first RX the '92 Jeep Cherokee Limited got "retired" to my wife's sister's cattle and wheat ranch up in Everson (north of Denton) and has proved to be the ideal vehicle for the area. We'll have our 2001 C4 in Lewistown in late July but it will NEVER see MT in the wintertime. In point of fact it rarely, if ever, goes out of our garage in the wintertime here in Seattle.

POST 8Original post

wwest, remember that snow storm we had? I remember being stuck on a hill nearby my place in Kirkland in an '07 325i. Absolutely could not handle the snow as it had summer tires on it. The thing that I'd be most bothered with is the wear/tear from salted roads. Even that spray stuff they use in Seattle eats at the finish of wheels that aren't painted. I remember when I ran a set of BBS LMs on my S2000... that sucker is clear coated and durable, but the chemicals actually ate into the clearcoat. Getting those fixed on such a lovely set of wheels broke my heart. That's when I knew I needed a winter truck.
